Are these the most accurate scenes depicting modern warfare in movies? War historian, NATO Advisor and presenter of History Hit’s Warfare podcast James Rogers is here to tell us.
You can listen to the Warfare podcast here: podfollow.com/the-world-wars/...
In this video, James delves into the gritty world of modern warfare, as portrayed in some of the most compelling films from recent times.
Starting with 'The Hurt Locker' (2008), a tense and thought-provoking portrayal of bomb disposal units in Iraq, James discusses the film's authenticity, and the psychological toll of war.
Moving on to 'Beasts of No Nation' (2015) he analyses the depiction of child soldiers in West Africa and the ethical dilemmas faced by those involved in such conflicts.
With 'American Sniper' (2014) the focus shifts to the story of Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in US military history. James examines the film's depiction of the sniper's role, the psychological impact on soldiers, and the wider implications of war on individuals and society.
'Eye in the Sky' (2015) explores the ethical challenges of modern warfare through a drone strike operation. James dissects the complexities of remote warfare, collateral damage, and the moral decisions faced by military personnel.
Lastly, in '12 Strong' (2018) he analyses the portrayal of the US Special Forces' deployment in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. He provides historical context and evaluates the film's accuracy in depicting the intense combat situations faced by the soldiers.
Do you agree with James' choices? Let us know in the comments.

There's a video (from Insider I believe) of an actual EOD specialist talking about The Hurt Locker, and he tore it to pieces for its lack of realism.

@@Fafuchess except even that was overexaggerated more than it should have been. Do we as service members come to situations where it's tense and it's someone's life on the line? Sure of course, but we don't sit there for 10 mniutes going over what to do, we make the split second decision and run with it because our training kicks in and we get the job done. Not to mention, we aren't sending humans to defuse a suicide vest 9/10 times because we can just send the robot for that, no need to put US lives at risk if we don't need too. From what I have heard from people I know that had been deployed, if a movie were "realistic" it would be 1:15 min of nothing followed by 10 min of terror. In this video, I assume he is talking about the particular scenario being plausible, not the entire movie.

Well apparently you don't listen all too well because he said the realistic part of it was the tension you could feel from nervous situations. The movie does portray some parts accurately and it's a amazing film, both my brothers served in the military and they throughly enjoyed it but yeah its not supposed to be a realistic portrayal of how a EOD unit operates, it would be boring otherwise

@@StonedCabbage you’re also dealing with the fact that you’re mostly debating with kids on this topic lol. Kids that heard one opinion and will ride and die with that if it gives them a chance to seem to know more about a topic than someone else. The Hurt Locker is inaccurate in the fact that it doesn’t depict any real person or any specific real operation or specifically real event within the overall conflict. Yeah, but that's like calling a grenade launcher a blooper... not like calling magazines clips... One is a colloquialism, the other a conflation - they are not the same, guy. A bazooka is the colloquialization (common languave term) for any anti-armor munitions system that can be fired by a single operator - whether it's an RPG or AT-7, whether it's specifically anti-tank weapons from WW2 doesn't matter... That's like arguing over soda, pop, fizz, or coke... You got that crap from your drill instructor/sergeant who told you your M4 or M16 is not a "gun" it is a firearm so as not to confuse you with those flabby noodles you call arms or that little one eyed snake between your legs - because they wanted you to understand that it will kill you if you treat it like a toy and do not respect it's ability to end you in a second. That, or you got it from your NRA buddy who talks all day long about supporting the troops but made every effort to not join because he's chicken and his parents could afford for him to go to college. But sure - correct me if you'd like. You got nothing better to do apparently except quibble over the most inane thing from this clip.

AKs are pretty accurate. That's a huge misconception that people have and it bothers me. The cartridge itself (7.62x39) is inherently not as accurate as our NATO cartridge (5.56x45) but that doesn't make it inaccurate. The reason people think this is because the rifles that are as inaccurate, the barrels are shot out and they are mainly used as a volley fire weapon. You can get AKs that are 1moa, it is possible.

You are slightly off on 12 strong. It’s the true story of the first 12 green berets to go into combat against the ones responsible for 911. Although license was used in the movie as all movies do for mere filming logistics, and or dramatics. They ride on horses and imbedded with the adversary war lord general against the taliban. Furthermore their primary diary was calling in air strikes which is done by a JTAC operator. Although the laser of a target is an option. I can share countless podcasts and interviews of the soldiers tasked with this assignment. And it’s largely done by coordinates, popping of colored smoke as a reference and then pilots are instructed to strike north south east or west of the smoke or some combination of that based on the map, and compass readings of the area. Mis-drops happen all the time and a need for a correction of fire is common. Many times that’s why they’ll walk the rounds up to danger close to blue in blue forces. Although probably fictionalized getting closer is a feasible response to helping to zero the rounds to the target. I’ve watched countless Interviews on how hard it is to coordinate accurate jtac attacks based on the stark contrast of the ground reference provided by the jtac operator In coordination with the Birds Eye view of the the pilot provided the much needed air over attack. As someone who has several hours of flight time in a cessna the burds eye view can look much different that the grounds eye view of the same area and although the high ground provides context it can be void of the same details and perspective of the ground view. This happens even in areas that one is very familiar with. I have flown over the same areas I have driven for years and it looks different. Specific landmarks such as buildings and other key landmarks can be difficult to discern from the air. Even freeway identification un VFR can be disorientating. Granted I only have a few hours. Thinking I’m flying along one freeway my CFI instructed me it was a freeway perpendicular to the one I thought I was on. Obviously training can correct this. But it is much harder than the movies make out. That’s why the JTAC duty is so important and the lynch pin to calling in the life saving air cover strikes. Blue on blue attacks are more common than you think. It’s apart of the cost of war. Some Of the most compelling accounts are from the pilots so desperately trying to provide their fellow soldiers on the ground that essential live saving air over. Under pressure and the fog of war it can be a confusing , disorientating, daunting task to say the least. “Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) is the term used in the United States Armed Forces and some other military forces for a qualified service member who directs the action of military aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations from a forward position”

The AK47 platform is so much overrated by the pop culture. I hate, that this "historian" is blaming the ak platform for the usage of child soldiers. I grow up in a soviet satelite state, in the 80's, and i am a competition shooter today. We have a lot of AK platforms available. I have shoot them all. I am allso a certified gunsmith. The benefit of the ak platform lies in its manufacturing needs, and nothing else. it is designed, the way, that it can be manufactured under the most rudimentary circumstences, if needed. That is the biggest achievement of the ak platform. Yes, it is less susceptible to sand, but it is more susceptible to thick mud, as something, like an AR platform. Regarding the maintenence, there is no real difference in difficulity between the AK and the AR platform, its just, that You neead to perform maintenance on an AR platform more often. Regarding the easy of use, the classic AK47 shoots a much heavier projectile, than an AR, hence it produces a much more severe recoil. Also an AK is way havier, and the triger has a way more heavy pull as well. Hence shooting an AK is usualy more difficult, than to shoot an AR, or an STG44, or anything else in that category. So this whole myth, that the AK pawed the road to child soldiers in the third world countries, is just big time bullshit! Social, political, and culturial circumstances have created children soldiers, an they just handle the weapos, they are handed to.

A symmetric warfare is here Ukraine has shown how drones can be harnessed for not only visual obs but also for attacking with munitions . Another branch is the micro drones who are loitering munitions autonomous once target has been visually selected . Next step are the micro drone , bugs with a munitions load & able to explode on contact & looking like a bug . We are on the threshold of the next leap in technology , tested in Ukraine .

Great commentary. It does seem like the 12 Strong scene where the B-52 misses by a wide mark is unrealistic, especially when you have, in essence, a Forward Air Controller with eyes on target calling in the strike (oops!). Other than that, fantastic movies with gripping scenes of the horror of war.

Having read a book that goes into detail about that first mission into Afghanistan - centred around the first US death in the war at Qala-i Jangi prison but also exploring the first combat missions that led to that point - I think it's actually based off of a real event. There were only two teams of CIA/Military in country at that point, and iirc they didn't have any laser-finders and so were calling in support through grid squares - and I don't think they were even in direct contact with the flight crews at that stage in the conflict. Great book by the way if you're at all interested in the initial stages of the conflict - First Casualty by Tony Harnden.

This guy is no expert. You don't shine laser target designators onto enemy forces when you're dropping dumb bombs. That would be for laser guided bombs which the B-52 doesn't use. Also it's very easy to miss using dumb bombs from high altitude, just a quarter second too early or too late will change the impacts by a hundred yards. Also nobody has used a Bazooka since 1955. RPG's are miles ahead of a Bazooka. Can he study more? Or can you get an actual expert? Thanks

On a side note the kids in this film are incredible actors - there should be a class of Oscar for a group of supporting actors rather than a single one.

Hurt Locker and "accurate" don't go together still a good film, Beasts of No Nation is also heavily dramatized and leaves a bad taste in most peoples mouths, American Sniper is a good film but also inaccurate, Chris Kyle (RIP) was portrayed poorly in this film. Eye in the sky is completely made up and 12 Strong is ridiculously dramatized also. Dr Rogers should stick to being a NATO advisor and a specialist on Drone Warfare because he does understand that part of war. This Cornell Lad should stick to what he knows and not try and relate to the veterans he's supposedly studying. However he does not concept nor understand the reality of War. In all not a bad video was entertaining at some parts :)

Here is an account of an a10 pilot and the difficult task it is to hit the target especially with the added pressure of your fellow troops in contact. And also how seriously the pilots take protecting the troops on the ground. A-10 Pilot Takes Over 100 Anti-Aircraft Hits Over Baghdad kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLNxnqdj3ZfZink.html

Especially if you take into account an authorized danger close strike even from a drone. I believe danger close is 600m and in (Broken arrow in direct combat terms meaning on or **Extremely** close to friendly positions) especially in the modern day. Even if you can see designated friendlies, even making a choice of where to strike with smart munitions is one that's not taken lightly. Even AC-130 (A more stable platform for gun work than an A-10, but yes I do recognize the different situations that they are used in.) targeting crews are extremely extremely careful even if an attack that they're called in to help breakup is not within danger close zone.

Well, there's a lot, but I'll try to narrow it down to the biggest. The fact that he routinely flaunts orders and doesn't end up court martailed. Completely disregards safety measures and does a bunch of shit that would get him killed. Does so many things outside EOD's purview The fact that both of these random EOD guys also happen to be trained snipers who know how to shoot a .50 cal, dope the scope and make spotter calls(that might just be my pet peeve because I was a sniper) They seem to come and go from a base in an active war zone with no real security measures ...

@@cuachogaidh I’m sorry to be pedantic now. I’m genuinely not trying to be obtuse. But could you give me one example of EOD safety measures he fails to follow?? While I understand what you’re saying, this all seems like procedural stuff (aside from being able to use a .50 cal) that the movie is maybe trying to show can go out the window at times in a war zone? Is when he tries to go up and cut the locks off the guy with the bomb strapped to him an example of a time he “should be killed”??
@cuachogaidh

@Shnipe1 he's constantly removing his gear, the way he grabs potential explosives with zero care, that scene where he pulls all of those warheads up by the one wire( those things weigh a couple hundred pounds each, he wouldn't budge them or that wire would break) when he has know idea how they are attached or if that would detonate them. And it's not just boring procedures they skip over, you want to show the tension in a scene show what they actually do. And no, safety procedures do not go out the window during times of war, especially bomb disarming procedures.
