Really informative! There is one thing I needed to address: the first "Criminal Minds" "interrogation" is not being seen in context. Two really important points that could completely change the perspective: - First, it's not actually an "interrogation" at all (at least, not in the sense that they're trying to get a confession). It's an interview with an already-convicted serial killer on death row (his death is scheduled for, I think, the next day; he'd been on death row for years but this is the first time he's consented to be interviewed). They're not trying to get a confession; they're just trying to improve their own profiling knowledge by interviewing this guy shortly before his sentence is carried out. This also explains his complete disinterest in being seen as innocent. - Second, the context of the show is that Hotch (the larger agent who starts off by telling them to remove the handcuffs) is... not having a good week, and is emotionally not in the best place for this interview. He actively wants this to escalate into a fight.

To be fair, that first scene from Criminal Minds isn't an interrogation, as such. It's actually a research interview. The guy is a sadist who gets off on menacing and then killing people. He has already been tried and convicted, but he has said he will now talk to the profilers and tell his story. The interview is taking place in a maximum security prison, which is why it's not an office setting.

Fun Fact: both of these interrogations from Criminal Minds didn’t really work in the show either I’d love to see a reaction to one of the really well executed interrogations that actually get a confession or trick the suspect like s2e10 “Lessons Learned” which I think shows the whole team at their best with behavior analysis in real time. Also, it’s pretty much a full episode interrogation so lots to work with there!

I actually really loved this video. Law Abiding Citizen is one of my favorite movies of all time and Criminal Minds is one of my top favorite shows! I was so sad when it ended. I just wanted to say that I really liked this video. It’s a little bit different from your usual content, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. Honestly I think I mainly clicked on it because I saw the thumbnails of my favorite shows. 😊 Then… I ended up wishing you guys could analyze more and more clips. So cool! When I watch these Hollywood interrogations, I actually find myself thinking, “Man this feels so real!” I genuinely thought they were probably a pretty good representation of real life situations. So I was cracking up when he disproved most of the aspects of them. “Think of your local post office…” 😂 So great! And it makes so much sense! P.S. My jaw dropped when he talked about how they NEVER sit across the table from the person. Holy moly! So true! I think every fictional interrogation shows exactly that! And all the real-life security camera footage I’ve seen shows them sitting around the corner. How many procedural cop shows have I watched, and I’ve NEVER thought of that?! P.P.S. The good cop/bad cop epiphany was great too. Most people probably think that actually happens. You guys did awesome!

I loooove Criminal Minds. Watched it several times, some episodes quite often. Have all the Seasons on DVD at home. I am very glad you are analyzing it here. On TV you probably need to create situtations or make choices that are not exactly realistic or most advised (even if you know better), in order to create a better story or bring in more main characters like in the interrogation scene in the beginning. Like the number of interrogators, or the positioning of the table.

Until extremely recently, I worked as a professional role-player for law enforcement training, and a huge part of my job was mock interviews and interrogations. As a result, I know the process the particular agencies I worked with use in their interrogations inside out and backwards, and I gotta say... if a trainee came at me super aggressively and demeaningly like the guy in that third video (which is, thankfully, a rare occurrence, cause they're trained *not* to do that), I guarantee that trainee was walking out of there with absolutely nothing but my abject disdain and an artfully placed "Fuck you". It always makes me twitch when I see these smug, condescending, aggressive interrogators in movies and TV shows, cause that just.... yeah no. I know exactly what I'd say if some jackass came back at me with, "I decide when you're done talking." It'd be, "Oh, you think so?" as I proceed to silently stare daggers at him until the inevitable heat death of the universe. Y'all are dead right that convincing perps you're on their side is the way to go. Antagonizing them is a great way to get a sealed clamshell and that's it

No don't hate on Derek Morgan!! No lol, I love the show but that takes ignoring certain things sometimes. In criminal minds Morgan was assaulted as a child so I think that's why he was so aggressive toward a potential predator, so maybe they should have sent in Reid or Hotchner instead.
@CountessOfOle
@CountessOfOle 2 жыл бұрын
@@joaks9178 Hey, I mean, I've never watched Criminal Minds, so if there's a good reason the character's behaving the way he is, then I got no hate for the character! Shoot, some of the characters I've played have 100% earned the scorn the aggressive trainees toss at 'em., lol. Problem is, my characters don't think they've earned the scorn the trainees toss at 'em. They always think they've got a good reason for doing what they did. So, all I'm saying is that guy ain't gonna get very far in his interrogation coming at a suspect like that. From what you're saying, sounds like they def should have sent in a more neutral person to interrogate the guy.

That was great! Loved how you took scenes from TV shows and dissected them. @Chase Hughes I have a few questions though. When I see real interrogation rooms on a real crimes channel I almost always see 3 people in the room and one of the interrogators blocking the entrance as it were. Even as someone just looking at it I feel trapped. Why do they do that? And why is the room often as small as a storage room with a table that fills half of the room?

I noticed the red lights when he walked in. I took it as Hollywood’s way of making it red like blood, and/or the devil walking in.
