A great forgotten military prison drama, but it does have a few flaws, and, a few great talking points about redemption. (FIXED VERSION)

I think this is a great movie. A few issues, but overall I think it was under rated.

So this movie is actually based on the USDB in Fort Leavenworth which is the military’s max security prison. The Army doesn’t have brigs. The old USDB was nicknamed “The Castle” because it resembled one. This movie is called The Last Castle because around this time the new facility was being constructed, which is the one I worked in. The shell of the old Castle is still up and does tours. I was in the Army as a 31E from 2012-18 and I worked in the USDB in 2014-15 and the only thing that is accurate in this movie is the blue books given to the inmates that cover the regulations of the facility. They used to be blue however now they’re yellow.

The Salty Seaman Would you be able to one day do a video covering the movie Midway? It’s one of my all time favorite WW2 films I’d be curious to see how accurate of a portrayal it was in regards to 1940s Navy

Older the military movie the more it’s out of my pocket. I’m lazy by nature and those require research. That said, I plan on getting to older movies at some point.

I worked at the USDB from 97 til 2000. I worked the guard towers, south base, wings, shu, upper control. We didnt use ruber bullets(00buck), we didnt carry batons, we had whistles and radios. we had 7 people on death row. We had female prisoners. We didnt have corporal punishment. The highest ranking prisoner we had was a Lt. Colonel. He still had top secret clearance but everyone doing time was busted down to e1 and dishonoredly discharged. You had to have a sentence of 5 years or more to do time here. Most only did a 3rd of their time. Unless they got written up. The pen was mightier than the sword so to speak. No need for corporal punishment when you write someone up and they get 6 months added onto their sentence for something as dumb as no making a bed. I never got to see the new prison before I left but they had broken ground on the site. We did wear the same unit patch they did in the movie (3 lamps and a cheveron) we wore the same bdu's like the movie. The wings had 6 tiers not 3 and under the wings was the shu (spacial housing unit) which was 2 tiers. That's were the inmates that were max, females, officers before they went into Gp and the death sentence inmates were held. We also had a trusty facility out side the walls.

Gen Irwin should’ve obviously kept that part about Colonel Soprano being a poser who collects artifacts to himself. And in real life he would’ve known better. Of course we would have been left with no plot then 🤷♂️

Thing is it's a military Prison so it can house any branch of the military. Even a Navy Brig can house any branch of the military or foreign combatants / hostiles. Couldn't say for sure but I imagine usage probably has something to do with region of conviction as to where your sent upon conviction. The movie Cadence (1990) would be an example of a movie that takes place in an Army Stockade (brig). That's an interesting movie if you get a chance to view it.

This movie kind of reminded me of "Brubraker" Robert Redford plays a similar character in the last castle to that movie.

Glad to see you in 2019 sir. You ever thought about reviewing TAPS. I haven't seen it in at least five years but I have a feeling it'd be a fun one for you to review. Anyways. Happy new year sir. Hope you had a good holiday season.

Just watched it on Netflix. The movie was entertaining enough but I couldn’t get over how ridiculous parts of it were. They literally killed prison guards just doing there jobs and put so many lives in danger just replace the warden. The ending was so over blown
@danski66943 жыл бұрын
I think they only killed the one guy in the tower who had a history of intentionally fatally shooting inmates in the head for relatively minor infractions

Would you ever do King of the Hill? Its not a full on military series, but contains episodes where it involves the military with a character named Bill as their barber. There's even one that involves a military flag, where they have to burn it but Bill stops them and saids he can take care of it. Not only that but involves a old veteran named Cotton who's a bit of prick and is quite short, due to a enemy machine gun cutting his shins off.

Yeah, and there’s no barber MOS, Bill has been a sgt forever and never transferred, etc. that’s about what I have to say about it.

@@TheSaltySeaman definitely a psychopath. Wannabe - yeh. Then again nobody knows of any famous officers in the Corps of Military Police for a reason (in every nations armed forces)

Hey Salty, I took the following from the IMDB Goofs page. Your opinion? - "Factual errors It was an error to have Irwin be a 3-star general. 3-star and 4-star generals hold their ranks temporarily, as long as they occupy a 3-star or 4-star position. When they are transferred from one 3- or 4-star position to another, the President must re-nominate them for Senate confirmation. If an officer is relieved (fired) from one of those positions, he reverts to 2-star by operation of law unless awaiting retirement (and then only for 60 days). Irwin was court-martialed, so the Army certainly wouldn't keep him in a 3-star slot. They'd relieve him and he'd go to court-martial as a 2-star. See 10 USC 601."

I really liked this movie. It had a great cast and performances by the leads. But its one of those movies where the trailer is better than the full film. There were issues with pacing. There were issues developing the secondary characters. And something that made it difficult to really be pulled into this film is the fact that both Gandolfini and Redford are somewhat unlikable. They're both leaders with a specific style and approach, one perhaps more of a natural leader than the other, but both, nevertheless, are natural leaders. Yet Redford's character, and his followers are criminals, some of whom did terrible things, like use kids as drug mules. It makes for a compelling story, but without full development of the characters we're left simply with these flimsy human props for Redford and Gandolfini to interact with. Also, both Redford and Gandolfini have an ego streak. They keep stroking their own egos and trying to out do the other in that regard. Again, interesting, but in the case of Redford, when the climax comes, it's hard to say if the driving point was ego, personal glory, or the welfare of the men. These are of the reasons why, I think, the movie didn't do very well. Also, we have to remember that this movie came out in November of 2001, and had been pushed back from September because of 9/11. So it ran into a wave of patriotism that would have found the story appalling. Still, I love this movie and have shown it to many people. Yet, I stand by my statement that the original theatrical trailer was better than the actual film. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iq6Hl5WC2dbDnaM.html

Honestly, as far as they go, any embellishments or contrivances can simply be pawned off as building a better story, in this movie's case. It's one of the least offensive military movies, in my personal opinion.
