Serving in the US Army, out of Ft Lewis Washington, I was on alert to Fort Irwin NTC for training out of McChord AFB. We were deployed so fast I didn't have time to get everything I needed, so I got what I could as I was off post when called up. I had forgotten a part of my tent, and had to improvise. So....I used my poncho to make a lean to from sage brush, and 4 tent stakes. No one laughed at me, and everyone said, why not use the tent? I just said, "I get better airflow using this as the sun is hot (108 degrees at that time during the day.) so I have natural AC.!" I never did tell anyone anyone I forgot the other half until now. I laughed when one of the soldiers came over and asked me if he could write a letter to his girl underneath it. I said, sure, and moved my pac out of the way, and there was plenty of room. Anyways, great video. Just sharing how the poncho was a game changer for me.

Excellent vid and I like the music (some have commented that they don't). The whole vid conveys a sense of urgency, and being stealthy because something has happened. Which is exactly why I EDC my poncho (Dutch Army) if I'm carrying a bag, which serves as a get home bag, in case of some event meaning I can't get home by usual means and have to go on foot, and maybe find a patch of wooded ground to hunker down in. Just watched a few minutes of another vid where he very skilfully set up a perfect poncho shelter, but it took more than 20 minutes, and that's just what he edited. In an emergency you would be stressed, maybe hungry and lacking in energy, and maybe lacking in time to make a perfect shelter, especially if it's started to rain, or you're just feeling cold. Hence, as you say, KISS - keep it simple. If I'm actually going out into the ''wilderness' (I'm in the UK so it's more countryside than wilderness) I have my larger basha (shelter sheet) or tarp, plus a bivvy bag, sleeping bag, and ground mat, and other gear to make my life comfortable.

Thank you for your feedback! I will definitely have a look at the dutch army poncho. Personally I would like to have a slightly larger poncho compared to the US Army version. Thank you again and cheers to beautiful UK! Martin 🤜🏻🤛🏻

@@BushcraftBuddy The Dutch poncho measures 2.05 x 1.5m. It may be larger than the US poncho, as the Dutch are the tallest people in the world. It's certainly very robust. Also I find the DPM camo works very well in NW Europe.

I love this video so much and I've learned so much from just watching VS listening. New Subscriber here. I've checked out your other vids and they're good too. My only suggestion is to have background music, like you did for this video. A lot of ppl these days are attention deficit, thanks to the advent of social media. Background music kinda hypnotizes ppl into being engaged, to an extent. Thank you for your content and I look forward to seeing more of your content! I want to see you hit 100k subscribers, I know you will.

Thank you big time for your wondwerful comment. It is really motivating to me! Thank you also for your suggestion to use background music. I have used it in the past and tried to focus more on the sounds of nature. I will rethink that point, thank you! All the best and have a great week, Martin 😊

Yes, as he said make sure you get a Good Quality, properly sized poncho... I'm a veteran and was able to purchase direct from the US manufacturer ORC Industries Wisconsin two New OD Green ponchos 90"x65" which is what is needed for proper shelter. The ACU camo ponchos are also available for the aesthetically challenged. Finding "New" or New condition US made GI ponchos are almost impossible to find. Those that are available sell for $100 +... great video !

If tarp, poncho,or anything is. touching you or material in most conditions, you will get wetter from condensation or rain blown into the space. All of these will work in dry conditions,in wet get some clearance between you and shelter material, and get something to close off ends as much as possible. In British Army Infantry, my poncho had a cover over one end.

I just watched a lot of poncho tent videos on KZfaq and your approach was very informative and simple compared to other videos. Two knots is all you need to know! K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid.

Sehr originelles Video.

I am mostly filming in the southern parts. Black forest, Thuringia and forest of odes is where I shot most of my videos. Münster is a very nice city. Really amazing that you have spent your childhood there. Where do you live right now? Cheers, Martin 🤜🏻 🤛🏻

Pretty good video. Comments: 1. Add a woobie to your kit. 2. Add a large paper clip, several safety pins, 25' of mason string, and greased cotton in a baggie to your altoids can. The clip can slide into the hinge of the can and hold the lid straight up making it an excellent reflector at night. Use a drip of wax to glue the candle into the can. 20 years ago, I had bunch of scouts playing with these at night and they worked real well. 3. Treasure the poncho. When I was in the Army, new ponchos were $6 at QM Sales so I bought 2 for myself to take home. It only took 40 years for them to disintegrate. 4. Add several 2" shingle nails to your stake bag. I prefer to set up a poncho against a fallen tree so that I've already got a wall on one side. 5. Add the canteen/cup/pouch/stove/halizone/utensils set up to your kit. 6. Look at upgrading your emergency blanket to an AMK Heatsheet. They are bigger, stronger, and quieter than mylar. MidwayUSA carries them. Good Luck, Rick
