Well, up to a point. The British abandoned their centuries old enmity with France in the face of the rise of Germany as the dominant power on the continent. In that sense 1904 can be seen as the first step towards WWI.

A great ceremony and a marked contrast to the one in Paris that was watched by hardly anyone ...the streets were alsmost empty. It is amazing that the La Garde was marching in London .....200 years ago it was just a dream of Napoleon :) La Garde did pretty well....but nobody matches British drill

Actually the Royal guard change is already well known and it's an tourist attraction everyone visiting London want to watch while the Republican guard change is just new and not a tourist attraction. @@christophermichaelclarence6003 they were not, because the Angevin Empire was not a legal entity. It is a term used by historians to point out the territories under the rule of the Plantagenet family. But fact is the Kingdom of England was independent, but for their lands in France (duchy of Normandy, county of Anjou, Duchy of Aquitaine) they were vassals to the French King and these territories were technically part of the Kingdom of France for which they had to pay hommage for. This complex situation led to the wars between England and France and their respective French kings

Yet it's Ironic that The Mall leading to Buckingham Palace was Modelled on the Champs-Elysée, complete with the Roundabout. I would've thought France had far more Places than the UK, around the Arc de Triomphe or even The Palace of Versailles, which is only about 20k outside Paris. Either of those would put BP to Shame, which Probably explains why they weren't used. Besides which almost any large Gathering in France at the moment turns into a Riot & arunning Battle with the Gendarmes.

It might be a bit of an offense if they were greeted by the Life Guards and other mounted regiments. The armour they wear was captured at Waterloo. The bearskins were also filched off the battlefield. Nevertheless, a wonderful mark of frienship. Afterall, none of them are stopping any boats.

Somebody connected with this otherwise beautifully staged event, ought to have a word with the police. It was shocking to see them encourage onlookers to cross back and forth in front of the open palace gates, especially during the playing of the national anthems. The result, as captured on video, was noticeably bad-mannered and ran counter to the message the British Government was trying to convey in marking the 120th anniversary of L' Entente Cordiale. The ceremony itself, however, was yet another triumph of British military precision and presentation. The Garde Républicaine made a great impression amid the all-round faultless turnout. Needless to say, the Band of the Grenadiers was first-rate.

@@stevewaters449 True enough! But that doesn't excuse poor policing practices at an international event, fraught with diplomatic overtones. During conventional guard changes, the palace gates are usually closed and in that scenario the police permit a fair amount of foot traffic in front of the entrance during proceedings, which seems fine. But on this occasion the gates were open and the police should have been sensitive to the psychological and optical difference - or perhaps the organizers of the event should have called it to their attention. When it suits them, the police are quite good at robustly herding tourists onto the sidewalks and keeping them there. I noticed in another video of the event that as they exited through the main palace gates, Senior Drum Major Gareth Chambers and the band narrowly avoided collision with a string of onlookers being waved across their path by a police woman, oblivious to what was coming up behind her. She came close to being flattened herself! That was another instance where the police should have been stopping rather than encouraging tourist traffic in front of the gate. It's easy, I know, to be an armchair critic... 😀

I wish the Duchess had buttoned up her coat - not a good look flopping open whilst the troops are all dapper

Leave the Duchess alone. She's doing her bit here, no criticism needed when the Royal Family are a bit thin on the ground. At least we've still got some Royals, the French executed theirs

@@suemcgregor9248 You are probably right, I really didn't mean to offend and I was laughing as I saw the guards exchange of the French guards coming over to England to protect Buckingham Palace. I wouldn't want the French to be guarding my home, they might run at the first shots being fired.

@@suemcgregor9248 You certainly are running thin over there as far as working Royals. I do wish the media would leave them alone as they are going through hell right now and deserve some peace and rest. My best to y'all from Texas.

@@suemcgregor9248 I have nothing but admiration for our hard working Royals and am a life long supporter of our Monarchy. I was merely making an observation which I am entitled to do. The occasion deserved her to be meticulous with her coat buttoned. Nothing to do with them being thin on the ground - it is about etiquette.

These is so awesome aspiring that it nearly brings tears to your eyes. I would love to see the American afforded an opportunity to participate in changing of the guard. That I would believe give the Americans an inspiration to ensure their alliance is seen as important today as it was in the past and is far greater than Trumps threats which is treated with disdain. America has to understand and respect that the world is not reliant on them but at the same time, past history and loyalties have endured friendly relationships and threats from Trump of past has made all Europe and Asian alliance weary of America and as such, no alliance will trust America while Trump is given access to sensitive information thus, until the Presidential election is won by Biden, no such sensitive information sharing will be enjoyed by the US.

Don't insult our soldiers who died by the thousands with Belgian and Dutch soldiers to help yours to run away from Dunkirk. Get a knowledge of history in books not in inaccurate movies. The UK resisted with a very much admired bravery. But no, "England" didn't win the war on its own. It wouldn't have without the US and the then URSS. The Eastern front was where things started to go wrong for the III Reich.
