The war in Ukraine has become a real-life testing ground for advanced weaponry, with drones taking center stage. Among these innovations is the S-70 Okhotnik, also known as Hunter-B. This unmanned combat aerial vehicle signifies Russia's push towards integrating high-tech stealth and combat capabilities into its drone fleet. The Kremlin boasts that the S-70 will be a game-changer on the battlefield and NATO is definitely watching closely.
Russia initially planned a swift deployment of the S-70, with deliveries slated for 2024. However, this timeline has been a moving target. In April 2023, production was pushed back to no earlier than 2025. Now, recent reports suggest a potential return to a late 2024 production start. This statement was revealed by the Novosibirsk district vice-governor, where the production of this unmanned drone will take place. This inconsistency timeline leads us to confusion: when will the S-70 see service, and what role will it have in the ongoing conflict?
Before delving into this question, let's take a closer look at the S-70’s capabilities to understand its potential role on the battlefield, whenever that may be.

Thanks to the sanctions, Russia now has an all local policy. If thinking that Russia is somehow dependent on foreign nations for tech makes you feel better, so be it, but it makes no difference to Russians. The engines for the SU-57, for example, used to be foreign, they are now local, and even surpass the performance of the original by at least 10%. @mm650
@mm650 13 күн бұрын
@@off6848 Russia's industrial base wasn't intact even before they invaded Crimea. They are functionally a 3rd world resource extraction economy that also has with nukes. Their only really thriving industry is resource extraction and that was only brought online again with MASSIVE help from western firms who have now left. You call the US industrial base "gutted" because you don't understand what an industrial base IS. You think it's factories and raw materials and energy. That's obsolete thinking. What makes an industrial base work is PEOPLE. Not, brute labor mind you, SKILLED labor, TRAINED labor, ADAPTABLE labor. The KEY thing that makes the Russian economy NOT a "intact industrial base" is a profound lack of SKILLED PEOPLE. The Soviet education system for technical ans scientific training (we're talking about the equivalent of graduate engineering programs, trade schools here) collapsed for what can only be described as 'Soviet Reasons' in the mid 1980s... insofar as the Soviets replaced it with anything it was just ideological indoctrination, and it was never repaired or replaced in the 30 years since the fall of the USSR. What this means in 2024 is that if a person is all both of the following: (1) Russian, and (2) Can be described as any kind of "engineer", they are either 65 years old or older, or they are foreign trained. The 65+ cadre are aging out and retiring. The younger cadre are mostly no ideologically aligned with Putin, and HAVE OPTIONS. (At a minimum they speak a foreign language well enough to pass classes in that language, have a non-Russian and therefore internationally acceptable degree, and have contacts amongst their former class mates and professors outside Russia.) These younger Russian engineers are LEAVING RUSSIA overwhelmingly. The above failure of the Russian technical training system is further compounded by the fact that Russia is in demographic free-fall. There are more 60 year old than 50 year old, more 50 year old than 40 year old, more 30 year olds than 20 year olds... Even before they started leaving there weren't that many young Russians to begin with! This lack of skilled cadre can be seen everywhere in recent Russian military and civilian failures. Look at the drone-attacks on refineries... these refineries are going down down days, weeks, even in some cases months! These drone attacks are not THAT devastating! They should be coming back online in minutes or hours vs most of these attacks. They aren't because the people manning them are PROFOUNDLY under-trained. Why? Because all of the skilled people are being pulled into work more critical to the war effort. Nope, if Russia hadn't inherited the Soviet Nukes, we would just regime change them like any other failed state that becomes a nuisance.

All modern flying wings owe their existance to the Jurgen brother who designed it on a garage circa 1945. Sometimes known as the Horten/Gotha 229.The resemblance is very striking.

Let's Say that the S-70okhotnik B could jusn not enter service BEFORE it complete its own testing and receive an OFFICIAL designation from the MoD, S- and T- designation are linked to prototypes so, that means that they are still in (the very final part of) testing. So even the eventual discrepancies in dates is meaningless there , they have the serial assembly line in the making , so that would begin production a.s.a. the testing is over but would need some time to optimize the output and receive enough of them to operate on field.

Look to the second test prototype of the S-70, the photos are available. It has the flat nozzle already. It is not crucial for a subsonic aircraft, but very crucial for a supersonic. The flat nozzles reduce thrust by 18-24% for the same engine with circular nozzles. Tested & proven!

Stealth Technology: The S-70 Okhotnik is equipped with stealth technology, including a flat nozzle, to reduce its radar cross-section and increase its survivability. Heavy-Strike Capability: The drone is designed for heavy-strike missions, capable of carrying precision-guided munitions (PGMs) and air-to-surface missiles. Long-Range Capability: The S-70 Okhotnik has a range of 6,000 km (3,728 miles), making it a formidable asset for long-range missions. Autonomous Flight: The drone is capable of autonomous flight, allowing it to operate independently or in tandem with manned aircraft. Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T): The S-70 Okhotnik can be integrated with manned aircraft, such as the Su-57, to provide a loyal wingman capability.

They already produce S70 in small number. S70 already been used in Ukraine. Not as weapon carrier, that's Su 34 job. S70 is the ISR stealth drone. Spy on Ukrainian positions and relay it to command center. Command center then send out Su 34 to do their job based on the information they got from S70.
