Why We Still Love the F-4 Phantom After 60 Years - Hello and welcome to another episode of Military TV. Today we're going to discuss about one of the most versatile fighter jet ever built, this is “F-4 Phantom II”. The Phantom was prolific, with 5,195 copies serving in the air forces of twelve nations.
The F-4 Phantom was a capable aircraft, setting several speed records soon after it first flew in 1958. But then again, there have been many equally capable aircraft over the years. In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a flock of high-performance American jets in the skies or on the drawing boards: the F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-106 and F-111. Where are they now?

After 60 years of service ....still a very beautiful plane. I have always loved the F-4, ever since I first jumped in one of them back when I was 9 years old and ever since, I would see them fly everyday above my house and now I get to ride these birds. Just a correction, Greek F4's ain't got many years left in service, and Japanese F4's retired about a year ago, it is sad that the last Phantom in service in Japan made its last flight.... I am so thankful that these amazing, spectacular, astonishing, majestic, beautiful planes are still in service in my country! It is amazing to see these beautiful old war-birds flying over half a century after their design was first developed, there is something to them that I can't describe that makes me feel in a unique way, they bring so much beauty and emotion. I believe that fighter jets of that era are like Gibson and Fender guitars. The best ones were made in the 50's and 60's. There's something about that time period where excellence was just that much better. I will always love these planes no matter how better and advanced the upcoming ones will be.

My uncle, William Elmore, and his design partner drew on paper and invented the F-3J for McDonnell Aircraft Company. That plane was renumbered by the Pentagon as F-4. Then they slapped on the name Phantom. It's modest by todays standards but at the time it over performed against the Pentagon's goals. The finished product arrived under budget. Every year it was produced it cost a bit less because of the "Learning Curve". Much of what is built into the F-15 was invented and developed thru the F-4 program. The biggest design secret was the aerodynamic theory that twin horizontal engines was the very best platform in almost all situations. That idea still plays out in almost all platforms today.

@@enricomandragona163 Well, actually, it was a huge design center on the NW corner of Lambert International Airport, Bridgeton, Missouri. The 3 story building was an octopus with several arms. At the time there were probable 100 design boards, each 5'X8' in size. There were slide rules, everywhere. In 1970 Uncle Bill took over that building and had about 350 design tables working for him. He was a great, but, quiet man.

I loved this video! It was concise and easy to understand for a non-pilot such as myself. My father, USMC fighter pilot Major M.W. Maddocks flew the RF-4B Phantom in Vietnam and over Cuba. He tested into fighter school via NAVCAD and was in from 57-69. His last active duty assignment was in El Toro, Calif., where he went after being released from Vietnam. I can't help but feel partial to the F-4s, despite their older style. Hope to see more on the F-4. And, if you have anything on the A4-D Skyhawk, my Dad spent 500 hours in them, and served as a nuclear weapons delivery pilot. Thank you, Sue

Well, to be fair, in Greek service, the F-4E is only externally a Phantom, internally is a very-very different beast. All Greek F-4E PI (Peace Icarus)-2000 AUP (Avionics Upgrade Program) in Greek service have been upgraded by the German DASA and have received: -the Hughes APG-65GY radar (the same one fitted on the F/A-18C/D), -the Honeywell H-764G navigation system combining LINS & GPS, -the NAVCOM AN/APN-232 CARA radar altimeter and Elbit Modular Multi-Role Computer (MMRC). The cockpit has also been enhanced with Elbit multi-function colour displays, new DTS & the imaging system V-80AB-F, -the AN/APX-113 Advanced Identification Friend or Foe (AIFF), -the possibility to use targetting pods, especially the Litening pod. With the Litening pod, Greek F-4E can now undertake non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (NTISR) duties and launch laser-guided bombs (or designate these weapons for other types). Furthermore, the use of the Litening pod has upgraded the role of the weapons system officer (WSO). An experienced WSO serves as the "brains" of the tactical formation, providing regular situational awareness updates to other jets, increasing the probability of a kill in air-to-air missions or providing accurate attack parameters for air-to-ground missions. The upgraded Greek F-4E PI AUP is capable of carrying the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), AGM-65G air-to-ground missile upgraded with the CCD seeker, AGM-130 air-to-ground guided missile. In short, the upgraded F4E PI AUP is the poor-man's F/A-18 Hornet. The purchase of the Rafale F3R by the Greek Air Force though, will lead to its retiremement from active service.

So long as the airframe is up to it, and provided the electronics and the engines are updated, the F4 is still a very potent weapon. Ask the Iranian pilots during their 8 year war with the well equipped Iraqis, what they thought of the F4 and how much punishment that old fighter took, and it still came out with its head held high.

When the U.S military air base in the Philippines are still operational during that time, majority of the combat aircraft that are designated in that base in Clark Field, Pampanga are composed by the Mcdonell Douglas F-4 Phantoms, in several different variants in general. When finally the withdrawal of the said air base came in 1992. It is so unfortunate that the Philippine government administration during that time has never try to expressed any particular interest upon the possible acquisition for those old but still very useful F-4 Phantoms. There is no more use for them anymore, in the U.S military service in some point, because they are slowly been replacing by a new and more highly equipped combat aircraft such as the F-18, the F-14, the F-15 and the F-16.

The name of the phantoms, which was jointly modernized with Turkey and Israel, is the F-4E 2000 Terminator. By the way, the nickname of F-4s in Turkey is "FATHER". Since the Turkish Air Force could not acquire the F-35 aircraft, it will have to use around 30 F-4E Terminator aircraft until 2030. It is estimated that the F-4E terminators will be taken out of service with the new fighters of the Turkish TFX program entering service with mass production in 2030. In spite of it's F designation, F4 was conceived as fleet defender-interceptor. It being used as a fighter was just an afterthought.

The Philippines would be better off waiting for the USMC or USN to replace the F/A-18 hornets with F-35 and then snap up a of the left over hornets. Boeing is still supporting the hornet so upgrades and replacements would be available with out have to cannibalize other hornets.

Good Video, The Phantom was a Great Fighter, The Top Brass in the LBJ administration failure to train pilots to Dogfight was the issue. Brave men like Frank Ault and Dan Pedersen started to retrain pilots on using the vertical in a school they started called Fighter weapons school. These pilots took the ratio from 2:1 to 24:1 with the phantoms by the end of Vietnam. I wonder what the ratio would have been if these pilots was trained to Dogfight at the beginning of Vietnam?

Tactics, politics and NO GUN doomed the Phantom II during Vietnam and it still proved itself to be the superior fighter of the war.

McKinley Mac Yes I’m from Louisiana, and your condolences are not needed. And I’m sure you do not speak for the whole You Tube community. I have been all over this planet and I’m free to go anywhere I wish. I choose to stay in SE Louisiana. Where do you live?

@@billmorris2613 Perhaps I was a bit hasty. I was in Southwest Louisiana for some time and the people said there was little difference between those two places. But I shouldn't have posted my comment with no real-world experience. They said the biggest difference was between North and South Louisiana. So admittedly it might... MIGHT.... not be so horrible where you live. Hopefully not, for your sake. Edit: Sorry, I neglected to answer your very fair question. I live in München, Deutschland.

McKinley Mac There is not much difference between SE and SW Louisiana. I have two brothers that live in the Lake Charles area. Besides the weather what about SW Louisiana did you not like? In my travels around this planet the only place that came close to having the great food we have was Italy.
@mckinleymac3452
@mckinleymac3452 2 жыл бұрын
@@billmorris2613 Oh yeah the food was very good. Even something simple like reds beans & rice was good. But communicating with the people there was very hard. They would not consider anything else to be correct except the way they did it. And this was applied to everything. They would *intentionally ask me* what sports I liked and then laugh and say everyone else was stupid if the person was not an LSU fan. Yes stupid... after they asked for my opinion. That's just one example but it was that way about EVERYTHING. They refused to consider that if anyone did something different that it would be okay. They said "damn Yankees are such assholes" when they were the ones acting like that. One guy said he worked 'up there' and "told those assholes all about themselves"(I'm not a damn Yankee at all). And btw he seemed to be the only one that had ever traveled more than 10 footsteps from his place of birth yet they were _experts_ on how other people lived.
