Vending machines like this is really common in Transilvania. We call them "iron cow". The concept is that there are a lot of villages with old people who can't compete with the dairy giants. So some guys decided to buy all the home made milk from the villages and sell it with the use of vending machine. This benefits everyone. We get to drink real milk, small farmers have revenue and the "milk collector" company creates jobs.

I grew up drinking alot of fresh milk. My Aunt and Uncle had a small dairy farm from 1957 till 1995. They had a herd of 50 dairy cows. My parents struggled financially so Aunt and Uncle gave us many food items grown and raised on their modest farm. I will never forget the taste of the fresh dairy.

Drink store bought milk and milk fresh at a farm and I promise you will notice a huge difference immediately. Store milk usually has a slower consistency. Milk from a farm is smooth like water. It also tastes WAY better than store milk. The most amazing milk I've ever had was fresh from a cooling tank in a farm.

Little tip for anyone else who’s lactose intolerant, you can actually get lactase tablets to take when you eat anything with lactose. They either have an enzyme or help you produce the enzyme (can’t remember which) needed to properly digest lactose! They can be a bit expensive, so I try to save them for special things like ice cream or when I’m going to be out eating lots of dairy with few opportunities to get to the toilet, but they’ve been super helpful for me

We have mild vending machines at milk booths in india. It is called "token milk" because you pay at the counter and get tokens to put in the vending machine. We used to take steel cans with handles to fill up milk in. Of course it is not milkshake, it is plain milk but it used to be a lot of fun to put the token in and watch the can fill up with frothy milk. And I guess it is sustainable too. We switched to polypacks later as it was costlier and hence considered better in quality.

Did you know that Lactose tolerance is a relatively new mutation in our species? In 2002, a group of scientists completed a study of genes of 196 lactose intolerant adults of African, Asian, and European descent. They determined that lactose intolerance is actually the human Norm. It is lactose tolerance that represents a relatively recent mutation in the human genome. The ability to make lactase into adulthood is concentrated in people of northern European descent, and the researchers speculated that lactose tolerance became widespread among the group because it offered a survival advantage. Pretty neat, huh?
