Milking Cows on a Small Dairy Farm! Watch my father and I milk our small herd of dairy cows. First enjoy the stunning views of the herd grazing the rolling hills, as the sun rises! Then we get started in the barn. We are milking in a 40 cow tie stall barn, built in the 1920s. Currently the milking herd size is 47 cows! Enjoy the video, thank you all for watching!

the problem is......there are a LOT of needs for milk which require many large dairy farms in order to supply all the needs. When you have over 300 cows on your farm....not including the steers and calves.....there is no way to have all the cows out on grass all the time. You have to use your acreage to grow all the food that all those cows/steers/calves require. Usually they rotate them. Cows who have finished up the milk cycle until they calve again get to have a 3 month vacation outside until it's time to bring them in just before they're due to calve. The larger farms do keep their milkers in....however they provide clean comfortable beds for them that get cleaned every single day...along with the isles. They 'have' to keep them clean because if they don't the cows will get mastitis from laying in filthy bedding. All cows on all dairy farms are well cared for. Makes no sense whatsoever for a farmer NOT to take good care of his animals because his livelihood depends on it. So no need to 'dis' farmers who have their cows on concrete. That's just the way it needs to be in those circumstances.

@@Emg2463 I'm not dising a farmer that keeps his cows on concrete all the time . I know that they take good care of their animals. But it's a better life for cow to be out on pasture as much as possible. I'm more of a believer that the country would be better if the 300 cow dairy you used for example was 6. 50 cow dairys . I just never could get into that mindset milk more cows.

I milked cows for 45 years. There was never a " ruff " year. But if a person goes into dairy farming / farming total debt....yes life is expected to be ruff ! My boy just starting his 50 cow operation last year. Hes doing just fine 8000 dollars per month. Its what you do with that income !

Enjoyed your video! Similar to a lot of your fans, I also grew up milking on the family farm 80-100 head (60s, 70s & 80s) with the surge buckets. We always seem to have a few head with serious attitude problems.

I used to go help bring in the cows now and then, on my relatives farm. It is so great to see clean cows, on pasture, raised and treated the way they were meant to be. So different than the big industrialized dairy operations. I hope there is always a place for small family dairy and lifestock farms like yours.

Only thing missing was the old AM radio blaring in the back ground tuned to some oldies station and the electric fence setting the beat. Sometimes I do miss the old girls.... Then I remember the just freshend heifers and that feeling goes away.

Enjoyed this video very much. My dad had 24 head of cattle and milked in a barn with stanchions back in the late forties/early fifties. He originally milked a good few of them by hand, but that got pretty difficult. I remember going down to the barn and loved hearing them being milked and listening to Gene Autry on the radio. When I was young I once made the mistake of wondering into a small group of young heifers, must have scared them because I was knocked down and then I ended up in the milk-house getting washed down. Still loved them, though. Later he had to give up the farm and we moved to a different place, but he still had to have one cow to milk, which he did when he returned from work in the morning (worked nights at a dairy) and then before he left for work. Can remember Molly mooing because he was a little late getting home. He loved doing it and was one of the strongest small men I can remember. He also had a couple of draft horses for field work, but had bought a John Deere before I got to ride them. Anyway thanks for the memories.

I am always so impressed with the udders on your cows. They are all up and tight and none hanging to the floor as happens as a cow ages.That is the "business end" so most important. I was apprehensive when I switched from stantions to tie stalls, but cows adjust so fast and it is awesome to "touch" each cow as you enter and exit them!

Love it, you guys do everything just the way we did on our dairy in upstate New York 40 years ago. 😀 From the tie stall barn to the pipeline milkers, to the throwing down lime on the floors! All you need to complete the look is the one legged milking stools that my dad and uncle wore to save your knees. We've switched over to beef cows since '83 so no more milking but thanks for the memory trip, you guys are awesome.

What an amazing view, it brings worm to my heart! Those beautifull green hills, the sunshine, the chomp of the cows in the silence of nature, the cirping birds... Thanks for the video. When I was a boy in the 70s and 80s we had a similar barn except we had stanchions. Milked about the same amount of cows. Have great memories of getting the cows off the pasture and leading them to the barn. There is just something so cool about that!

Love this video and your farm. It reminds me of a bygone era - your operation is very similar to how things were at my grandparents farm here in PA. They sold their heard back in the early 80’s. Watching this brings back so many good memories. Thanks for sharing your farm life with us! God bless.

My father in-law (who has passed away) had a "smaller" farm too. Cows all knew what stanchions to go to. No pipeline. Used a dumping station. Absolutely loved spending time there and helping. Miss those days.

Looked like Dad's barn from the 50's, with wood stations two draft horse stalls and two box stalls, but no pipelines just canned milk cooled in a water cooled cooler

I just love that added touch of the cowbells. I was always fascinated that the cows learn there "spots". Ours know theirs too. No boss cows once they are in the barn.

Loving your videos! I did a quick scroll and didn't see this video. I was wondering if you guys would show how you handle milking a first calf heifer for the first time! Would love to see the process and talking about the steps you take prior to their first calving to get them used to handling/you!

I still help out on a 400 cow dairy to keep a tie to the cows but I really miss the 40 cow herd at my first job. There were also 500 sheep there. We milked in stanchions with a manger in the middle. I remember how warm the cow stable was on a cold winter day. We used Delaval milker buckets and a sputnik to carry milk to the bulk tank.

There is one cow that you have in your herd. She looks like she could be part Holstein but the black coloring is almost faded. I assume she is a crossbred. She sure seems friendly and loves being on your camera phone. She almost looks like a landrace or lineback breed. Very interesting coloring. Sure enjoy your channel, farm and cattle. You guys have pride in what you do. I used to help relatives on their dairies so I know the amount of work in dairy farming.

interesting to see the different breeds in the same herd, usually its only 1 breed or the other. Always watched my uncle bring his in when it was milking time, it is so amazing its always the same cow that comes in 1st when the door is open and the others follow her in. My uncle milked about 50-60 b4 he retired all Holsteins(not registered but good blood lines-he raised most of his herd from calves) that were born on his farm, stanchion barn

@@GierokFarms it was in the family for 4 generations, he had everything pretty much like you except the pipeline system. He tried a used one but took it out because it used too much water. I know their milk got the highest rating also, he rented a few other farms for his replacement and young stock and for hay. with all animals included(calves,heifers etc) i think he had around 100-110 animals in total and even had his own Bull which i know is unheard of pretty much nowadays, of course he moved them after 2-3 yrs because like i am sure you know they can be very unpredictable as they got older. When my grandpa had the farm he started out with Milking shorthorns then transitioned to holstiens. My uncle never kept the Red Holstiens because I guess they just didnt milk like the Black and White Holstiens

How many head are milked? Twice a day? All milked on the milk line? You feed any cottonseed? We had a small (25 head) stanchion barn when I was a kid. Great memories!

Great video, now that's the way farming is supposed to be, not all these mega farms!! I see things have changed no more water solution for cleaning udders(no more really chapped hands) bells are ok, but it would drive me nuts. Lol

It always amazes me that they would go to the same stall without any coaxing unless of course it was the first calf heifers and you’d have to train him for 2 to 3 weeks before they would realize where they had to go but it brings back a lot of memories never had a pipe line Milker and I love to have a quarter for every pail of milk I carried over 20 years years

New to channel we use to milk for around 20 plus years never milked in a barn like that i have milked 2 at time 4 at a time 8 at a time and 12 at a time always loved the bypass parlor the best i know you must have a reason for the bells i dont think i could stand that all the time every day lol i dont think i would like milking in a barn like that but its all in what you get use too that just looks like it would be hard your back bending over all the time but you all have a very nice farm love the videos i put down lime in our free stalls every other day also in calf pens
