How to capture milky-way in a little light pollution? What's the proper setting?

Book a plan ticket to a dark spot. It doesnt happy. That's why it's called light pollution unfortunately. Maybe try a light pollution filter. But it depends how bad your area is.

Hi! Thank you for this video but I'm still confused. I'm so new to this I don't fully understand. Do we really need to buy an additional lens kit to get good results? I plan to photograph the night sky with xt3 as well as the northern lights along with us in the subject . Would that work? Also your links are down like the fuji best night lens link.

Just an FYI, The focus ring on that lens isn't mechanical. If you get your infinity focus during daytime, switch to manual focus, turn the camera off and remove the lens. you can then twist the focus ring all you want it won't effect the focus. When you get to your site, Attach lens, power on and you are ready to shoot. Your tape may only confuse you if you depend on it and the ring gets moved while in your bag. you would need to realign before powering the camera back on, or you will move your focus. The tape trick works wonderfully on lenses with mechanical focus rings (meaning they change the lens focus with or without power).

Awesome video mate! I recently got a Nikon D3500 with the basic 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens. I've been wanting to do some astrophotography with a few mates in the foreground as subjects, and the Milky Way as the main part in the sky. What ISO and exposure time would you recommend? Should I go with the rule of 400 or 500? Thanks in advance :)
@matthewstorerphotography
@matthewstorerphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks nate I am glad that youve enjoyed it and hopefully learnt something! I would using a second shutter speed at f3.5 at 18mm. Then, depending how much light was around from the moon an iso value of 6400. The longest shutter speed you can do is 18seconds before the stars move, thats why I suggest 15seconds then if its to bright reduce the ISO value :) Hope this helps, email me if you ever need further advice :)

Great videos, Matt. This one especially, given that it is filmed in my beautiful country, Slovenia. Thanks for the lovely advice. I am now convinced the XT-3 is the camera (with the kit lens) for me. For video, what kind of darkness do you think this combo can take/at which settings without any extra lighting to avoid noise? Another thing - since the kit lens is not weather sealed, do you have any tips on how to protect it? All the best, Urban.

@matthewstorerphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! Firstly I find the fujifilm cameras workable at around 6400 ISO and plus the 18-55mm has great IS in the lens. I would have to say that most camera are weather sealed to some point. I would always use a free hair net that get from a hotel or home and just put that over the camera + lens when it rains. 100% free and all I have ever used when travelling. Just tuck it in the backpack somehow

@@matthewstorerphotography Thanks for the reply! It's not often a popular KZfaqr actually responds lol.... So in your final image, have you left a light on to paint yourself into the image or something or does the camera just pick up with the headlamp on alone? I'm sorry if I sound like a complete novice but I'm afraid I am! I've seen images of night photography with foreground illuminations and reflections on lakes etc but whenever I've done anything in the dark I've had to light paint it into the image so it's baffling me how people get a foreground and other subjects other than the milkyway etc!

Matthew this is fantastic! Hoping you could give me just a few base pointers, I am a beginner at astrophotography and want to test my Fuji XT10 + kit lens (XF18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R LM OIS Lens) camping this weekend. I am traveling cross country and need to get the hang of this asap haha! Thank you so much!!!!

Hello, Mat. Have you tried the Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30? I am wondering, between those two, which one is best for astrophotography and low light photography?

I have never tried the Sony A6400. But they would be similar. I can recommend the Samyang 12mm F/2 for both cameras if you go that way

Joey Medici I would recommend you to get the Rokinon 12mm f2 instead. The 14mm is designed for full frame. The 12mm let‘s in twice the light and you can expose 4 seconds longer, which is crucial on a crop body. Got mine for 230€, which is an insane value too

No problem I was about to say its a super moon this weekend. Youll have to wait 7 to 10 days for less moon. I manually focus its best to do this during the day before you head out. Secondly I did use the same Shutter speed when I stood in the image :D

Enjoyed the video. I hear that June_July in Scotland is bad for milky way photography due to the long days because the sun does not drop that far. Buggered as it’s just about a new moon, PhotoPills shows it’s visible (if cloud free) where abouts did you go to in Scotland? I’ll try find the video sequence here on KZfaq. Subscribed now. Cheers bud

I don’t know anything about cameras but watching your videos have helped. I’ve had this camera for about 10 yrs. Thank you for the info.

Hello Laura, I must admit it will be very hard and also it will introduce a lot of noise/grain into the image! However, what I would recommend is going out on a 30-50% moon this will help bring some light into the image and help you light up the foreground. Only way I am sorry Night Photography depends a lot on the type of gear you have. Goodluck

Bought x-t20 with the 18-55 kit lens a couple of years ago as my first ‘real’ camera and was told the lens was really good. Good to hear that confirmed. I took a some Milky Way shots out over the ocean here in Maine to avoid light as much as possible. Used PhotoPills to set up, just as you showed. Got pretty good results after post in LR. I tried to keep the ISO low to avoid noise, so I think the post compensated, but may have introduced its own noise. Otherwise I used your same settings. How much post processing do you do? How do you handle the ISO noise? You must have done on this image to finish, yes? Do you have tutorial on LR post processing? Thanks for the great video. Especially because it’s the lens I have.
@matthewstorerphotography

Regarding noise I wish to do a series next year on how to help that. But I am also starting a secondary youtube channel to do more of this type of content. But I use Capture One for editing Fujifilm RAF files because they are handled so much better. I can give you a 30-day free trial to capture one. But more to come from editing the images this summer :D
