The critical social failing of humanity is that we are very prone to falling into an "Us vs Them" mentality with each other, creating artificial divisions between ourselves based on arbitrary standards. But if we could find a way to make "Us" all of humanity, and "Them" something else, we'd likely stop fighting each other and focus entirely on that, which is exactly what the Emperor did to the Imperium.

Nah, the timeline wouldn’t match up, because nothing on our actual planet is anything like 40k, and they would probably just surmise that it was a work of fiction, a disturbing one, but just a fiction, if they even found anything of it at all. It would definitely make them do a double take though.

Honestly, I subscribe to 2 theories about aliens. Either they are so technologically advanced that we barely register to them, or my favorite theory, that humans are the only sentient species in the galaxy to advance while murdering the hell out of each other. So aliens saw us and decided to leave us alone because they worried that first contact would just cause humans to go full genocide mode and become space faring just to kill them all.
