How-To Black Mold Remediation Experience with RMR 86 & RMR 141 to clean up and remove my attic mold. Keep in mind this is my How-To or DIY experience but it is not a guide for you to use. Black mold is very dangerous and you should take care in working with it or better yet hire a professional.
Products used:
RMR 86: amzn.to/2zvz3zX
RMR 141: amzn.to/2A6R5IO
Sprayer: amzn.to/2TzGpJu
Respirator: amzn.to/2DrfDyt
Filters: amzn.to/2Pya3wq
Goggles: amzn.to/2Zv8JAK
Brush: amzn.to/3eh3etp
Tyvek Suit: amzn.to/3eixkNq
I used RMR 86 & RMR 141 as products in this video because from all the reviews I saw online they looked like they would work. The good news is they did and my attic was able to be cleaned and returned to like-new because of this stuff. Pretty dang amazing results if you ask me!

Fantastic job! I’m a Restoration Company owner and you did great! The only difference to hiring a pro is the technician has a ton of training and may be able to find additional damage caused by mold. We would set HEPA air scrubbers in the room while the cleaning is underway. The PPE you purchased was perfect and RMR pro (higher strength) is actually what we used to use we recently switched to a pro only chemical.

Just to be aware as I've seen a few references here: Bleach does not kill mold. It only bleaches. John Geiger's comment is the best method. Even if you remove the mold there are still "roots" in the wood you can not get out which is what the second chemical is for. An inhibitor so those roots don't come back to life. After remediation it's essential to not let humid air up where it can contact and condense against a cold surface. This means 6-8mil plastic on the ceiling sealed to the wall top plate before the sheet rock goes back up and then of course insulation to make sure that sheet rock is not the new cold condensing surface. This also means can of foam to fill in all the holes in the top plates made from running wires/pipes/etc. in the 4 walls in this room. Warm air holds much more moisture than cold air hence the reason the worst part of this nice gentleman's house is situated closest to the wood stove. Another commenter didn't think they're insulation was affected but it would be a mistake to keep it as it is seeded with spores ready to give back as soon as the environmental conditions are met for new mold growth. It really is mostly about air sealing and then drying or venting the humidity in your home, once you've remediated, otherwise it's a matter of time before it comes back. Good Video.

You do NOT want to put mil plastic on the ceilings before drywall. Some inside mositure transfers through the drywall and insulation to the outside. When you stop this with a vapor barrier that humidity will condense on the back side of the drywall like sweat and cause a grade A moisture problem. Proper attic ventilation solves the problem, not mil plastic on ceilings.

I also thought RMR-141 first...kill the mold, then come back and bleach out the stain with the RMR-86. We (apparently) have a leaking skylight in our upstairs bathroom, and therefore some black mold has appeared on the ceiling. We know it's got to be much worse inside, under the drywall. It will be thousands of dollars, so, being a good DIYer, I came here to KZfaq. So thankful for this video, and will do this (once the skylight is re-sealed), and rent an air-scrubber hepa filter, open windows, plastic sheeting to block from other rooms, etc. Then re-drywall.

Only thing as a DIY I would recommend to do differently, would be to use a hepa filter in a shop vac at the beginning and vac the entire surface first. You capture a majority of the spores and are then only having to treat what has grown into the wood. And after treatment, vac and wipe the rest of your walls and exposed material in the house with the inhibitor. Spores got airborne the minute you pulled the ceiling, and again when you kicked on the fans or opened a door. Great work for a diy though! Good vid

I love your DIY attitude I hope you got the ventilation issue resolved too. For others with mold issues, this could have been done even cheaper using common household ingredients such as vinegar, salt, borax, hydrogen chloride, or bleach. all of these will kill any type of mold. After killing and cleaning the mold spraying a water and borax solution on the substrate will prevent the mold from reappearing. After killing the mold you should use a leaf blower to dislodge the dead mold making it airborne and at the same time use a rental HEPA air scrubber to capture it, obviously, this would take several passes with the blower as well as several hours of run time on the HEPA air scrubber.

@@c50ge, You can mix them into any consistency, all will work. Borax or salt is used more as a preventative measure to keep the mold from coming back, I prefer borax. you can google any of these and read how mold reacts to them. You can use any type of sprayer. I rented a fogger for my situation as I couldn't get easy access to some areas.

Get a treatment paint after. Mix hydrogen peroxide 1 to 4 ration with water, but tbh using a product like the one in video is better and easier, it costs a bit more but saves you time.. after a treatment paint protects against future flares. Mold needs minimal airflow, darkness, humidity. Remove any one of these and mold cannot grow ( anerobic mold) . Just remember, mold grew there for a reason, if you don't address the reason it will re occur

I was impressed with the solution that he used plus the sealer to prevent more mold from growing ,however there is a reason why mold gets in there in the first place , for instance a bathroom fan that is not vented properly, poor ventilation, soffit on the exterior of the home does have vent panels in it., gable roof should have vent openings on 2 sides of the home opposite of one another. ( north and south or east to west ) Roof vent can be added ( 120 volt to come on when heat enters the attic to vent out hot air ) If you have a ridge vent you don't need an attic fan. Look for water coming in from a bad flashing job around the chimney where it meets under the shingles ( missing or cracked caulking on chimney brick ) . Dry ice will also kill this mold but can be costly and no fumes. ( look it up ) A mask and googles , white suit and latex gloves are a must. After applying this stuff wash your clothes off good in hot water and put in dryer. Just some things I listed can cause this mold. It will came back on the wood that was treated until you find out what is causing the mold in the first place. For those that are afraid of using chemicals "cleaning vinegar " can also kill mold with no harmful fumes. In closing you should keep your attic as cool as you can with ventilation , heat along with dampness ( humidity ) will cause mold in attics and will return even after this process is done. It will just go after untreated wood that you didn't spray and seal .

@benyoder1
@benyoder1 3 жыл бұрын
@@morehp1 The first one bleached it, the bleach cannot penetrate the porous surface of the wood but the water in the bleach does, now you just gave it more water to grow, if then the mold killer is applied then perhaps it may penetrate the wood but now it’s diluted further by the water already there from the bleach, thus weakening it’s killing abilities. That’s why it’s important to apply killer first then bleach then killer again.

Ben Yoder I keep hearing that about bleach, but Iv personally used bleach on wood floor joist in a home. Then came back with soap and water to wash the dead spores off. Put a fan on it to dry. My buddy still lives in the house and the mold never returned. My mom and dad had a water leak, mold on the sheathing behind the drywall behind a bath tub shower combo. It was thick. Cleaned with bleach washed down with clean water. Dried with fan and dehumidifier couple of days. New insulation and Re installed shower tub combo, fast forward 10 years later i removed that same tub combo, to install a shower only. As mother has bad hip. When removed the old tub I removed the insulation to take a look. Still looked like new lumber. It looked almost as bad as this guys her before I bleached it. I more out to think peoples mold issues return because they never fixed the issues. That caused the mold to start with.

Yeah, I think I can do the attic myself. If I had to scrub every inch I would hire someone. That RmR 86 is the same solution a pro was gonna use. $2600 seems to be the avg. Cost for a pro in CT.

You still have to sand and seal every inch. This is not a permanent fix. It will also leave spores you can't that can spread.

@@colecole3352 Good luck sanding all the nail embedded wood. It may be back over a long period of time but this was once new wood too. I’m pretty sure he eradicated the mold spores & this plus adequate ventilation will be ok for many years to come. Sealing with antimicrobial coating will decrease chances of reoccurrence.

What if after all the RMR cleaning, you came back and fogged with conrobium? Would that prevent new/regrowth?

Please answer me. Did the mold comeback? Can we use something like this inside ducts?, what about using mold bomb inside duct work and getting duct cleaned to get rid of mold? Please it helps a lot as i want to use it as precaution

I would think about adding a soffit vent on the roof in areas where it was bad. It is recommended 1 vent for every 150 sq ft roof.
@MillennialReview
@MillennialReview 3 жыл бұрын
Soffit venting was all fixed later on in the summer when I did new siding. In this case the ridge vent is most likely the culprit but hopeully with additional air flow we wont have this problem again.

I didn't here a spot in the video that says how long each product should sit on the surface. Do u apply and let it sit for a few hrs to 24 hrs or is it ok to spray with the mold killer then right after the stain remover? Then set up fans in the room to dry it out for how many days, until u can drywall over it??? Great video ty ty!

Hi - thanks so much for this video. I have a much smaller space in the ceiling of my basement, but this has been so helpful to watch. The mask you have linked is out of stock. Is there another one you could recommend? The choices are a bit overwhelming. If you link it in the description box, I'll order via that so you get the credit. Again, thanks so much!!!
