_"Who is he?"_ The guy in the white shirt is Gordon "Sting" Sumner, former lead singer of The Police and massive solo artist in his own right. His line is "I want my MTV," which at the time the song came out was the MTV jingle. Of course that was so long ago that Music Television (MTV for short) was still actually showing music videos all day. 😂

Yeah both he and Mark Knopfler grew up in the Newcastle area, and both Geordies found themselves in studio in the carribean at the same time so he was drafted for the song and used his melody from Don't Stand So Close To Me, getting him a songwriting credit....really 'money for nothing' lol

Sing's riff is a new take on Police's “Don't stand so close to me”. Thus this is the first British number song one that includes 2 number one choruses..

Mark Knopfler wrote this song after hearing delivery men in a store in New York commenting on the wall of TV's that were all tuned to MTV, he wrote down what he heard and turned that into this song. For the guitar sound Mark wanted the guitar to sound like ZZ Top since they were very popular on MTV at the time.Dire Straits was the band that played right before Queen at Live Aid, you can hear part of their set in the background of the "Bohemian Rapsody" movie.

Dire Straits were arguably the biggest band in the world at this point and only managed a lunchtime slot because they happened to have a show of their own at Wembley Arena, literally across the car park, that very night. Look out for the Wembley '85 show which was recorded for TV only 3 days before this which includes great versions of Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love.

That Live Aid 1985 concert at Wembley and the JFK Stadium was the finest line-up of talent ever to appear in one concert. Bob Geldof did well to put all that together. I watched it on TV at the time. Keep up the good work Millie! :)

I was lucky enough to get 4 tickets for the show. However, most of my friends werer into new wave music, so it was hard to find friends who wanted to go with me. So sad that teens in the 1980s didn'r know good music, and opted for songs that weren't that good. However, Money For Nothing was the group's worst song. Many Dire Straits fans thought the group sold out for the money with Money For Nothing and WalK Of Life, their two worst songs which ecame their most popular songs.

Sting is credited as a co-writer of the song because the "I want my MTV" part is musically the same as "Don't stand so close to me" in the song of the same name that Sting wrote.

We got us a $300.00 phone bill, back in 1989. My six year old son discovered "The Box". A service that you could call and request songs, 3 for$3.99 and they would be played on a cable channel. He was hardly ever left alone in the house, or so we thought! We didn't have to pay because he was only six.

"I want my MTV" was MTV's catch phrase back in the 80s. That was Sting, lead singer and bassist for the Police, singing that opening. They had tons of hits in the 80s and were at the height of their popularity around the time Live Aid took place. Check them out. "Synchronicity ll", "Spirits in the Material World", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Every Breath You Take" are just a few of their best. Mark Knopfler was the guitar player/singer of Dire Straits. Great guitarist, so-so singer. Check out "Sultans of Swing".

When it comes to Sting being on this song. It all started when Dire Straits was recording this song because when MTV was just coming out, they asked bands to create songs to be featured on first season of MTV. The lead guitarist and lead singer of Dire Strait's overheard moving crew workers across the street from their recording studio and created a song based on what they overheard. They even asked Sting come on to be backup vocals for the track

If you haven't seen it, you really need to watch Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing, in the Alchemy Live performance from 1983. One of the best live performances in rock. The guy in the white shirt is Sting. He sang on the album version of the song. He is not a part of Dire Straits. He was in The Police before going solo. Mark Knopfler finger picks like he is playing a banjo, with the banjo roll. That is used heavily in this song. Only way you can get it to sound right.

This song was written around the founding of Music TeleVision (MTV) that was the first U.S. TV station TOTALLY devoted to rock, pop music videos -- the whole theme of guys working physical jobs moving kitchen appliances like refrigerators watching and going, DAMN, I'm in the wrong line of work -- Look what these guys are getting away with for strumming guitars & pounding drums -- "Money for nothing, and your chicks for FREE" -- Still HILARIOUS to this day -- and yea, agree w/ comments you NEED to get into reviewing The Police that Sting played bass and was the lead singer in ....... Have I missed that?

What a deep dive you need to do. Dire Straits is possibly the biggest non-metal rock group of the 80s and 90s. This one is from Brothers In Arms - whole album is simply rammed with the biggest tunes of the mid to late 80s. Their back catalogue is outrageous. So many songs you've probably heard in a bar somewhere. The Dire Straits bass player, John Ilsley is amazing - totally on the fingers. Without the heavy bass Dire Straits songs would be nothing but he's so taken for granted. Sole surviving original band member except for Mark Knopfler on lead guitar/vocals.

Your next step should be the hit that made them: Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live concert): the guitar work and the drumming will make your head explode. Sting was lead singer of the very famous band The Police and has also had a long and sucessful solo career, including acting. if you want something spooky to react to over Halloween, then check out his solo track Moon Over Bourbon Street, which was inspired by the Anne Rice Vampire novels.

Written by Mark Knopfler and Sting. Mark Knopfler wrote most of the lyrics. The chords match some of the chords in Synchronicity 2, which Sting wrote for his band The Police 40 years ago 🎂. Sting sang lead vocals and played mostly bass and keyboards with The Police. In 1983, 40 years ago 🎂, The Police recorded their last studio album. The band was going to break up. But guitarist Andy Summers got some advice from the late George Martin, RIP. The Police finished the album and a tour, with Bryan Adams opening some of the dates. The album Synchronicity was their bestselling album. Every Breath You Take defeated Billie Jean and Beat It as the Billboard Song of 1983 and the Grammy for Original Song of 1983. Then, The Police broke up 💔 In 1985, Sting recorded this song, his first solo album and a song with Phil Collins. No wonder Sting was busy as a bee 🐝 that years! L 🤣L Suggested videos 📹: 1 The Police perform Synchronicity 2 and Phil Collins with Sting perform Take Me Home and 3 Mark Knopfler and Randy Newman sing Money That Matters.

It's clear you didn't get what the title of this video meant: "Dire Straits / Sting Live Aid" means that Dire Straits performed in Live Aid having Sting as his guest when they played this song. And now the most important question: who is this guy wearing a white shirt? It happens that he is known as Sting and, as someone already told about it, he is the former lead singer of the band "The Police". And both bands were very popular some decades ago. If you want to get familiar with music from that time, it's a must getting to know some artists who were famous, then. Suggestions of Dire Straits songs? "Walk of life"; "Twisting by the pool"; "Sultans of swing".

It appears you still haven't done The Police. I think you'll like the bass in Roxanne. Sting is both the bassist and lead singer of The Police. You've really got to do something by them, as a bassist and singer yourself.

Always loving your channel and reactions. If you check out Dire Straits Live On The Night 1993 concert with the song called Calling Elvis you won't be disappointed. It's so awesome. All the best Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

You need to listen to music from The Police - right up your alley. Start with their first two albums and go from there.
