Leaving the keys on the table is a bitter reference to suicide, she will never return home and will never need the keys again. She goes towards creating a fable of her own. Many people do not understand the meaning of this part of the lyrics.

I was 18 when this song came out going through waves of depression for who knows why and I heard this song and was instantly hooked and brought me out of that hole. Since then this band stands next to Audio Slave RIP Chris Cornell. Thanks for your awesome reactions love your singing

I still recommend their song, "Lost In Hollywood", which isn't a traditional SOAD song using their fast/slow method but it's still quite beautiful to listen to hearing the harmonics of both Serge as backup and lead guitarist as lead vocals.
