I am milling blue sugar pine logs into live edge table top slabs with a Woodmizer LT 15 sawmil. This large Sugar Pine was killed by bark beetles last year. I cut the tree down last fall and yarded it out with a Farmi winch on my Massey Ferguson MF30 tractor. You can see those videos here:
• Tractor Logging Large ...
The blue stain in the wood comes from a fungus that is introduced by the bark beetles when they attack the tree. It creates some very beautiful colors and grain patterns in the wood.

That's some beautiful stuff 🧡👍. Get a log pile ready & I'll bring up my Lt 50 wide and let you demo it for a weekend 🙂💪👍

Sounds like a great offer. If I need to get some production out sometime, I will keep that in mind.

Them are some nice looking slabs. From the looks of the rest of the tree logs they look great, nice and round. Yea them and two are a little big.. lol he shotgun them down to the right size. And that a little sawdust pile you have there.. 😂😂 nice job. Thanks for sharing

You weren’t supposed to notice the big sawdust pile. Or all the other excessive woody debris that is accumulating around the mill. I appreciate you watching and thanks for the comment.

Excellent job on your mill. My daughter and i left Alaska last week and now were in Philippines. Lot of hardwood here, maybe i will get a mill.

Yes you should get a mill. Then show us on video what Philippine hardwood looks like. I would watch that. At least you are out of the smoke now.

Sugar pine doesn’t seem to be widely known. Thank you for the comment.

I don't usually like blue in pine but the consistency in this log makes it look great!

Thanks Dave. After shooting the video I was doing some cleanup around the mill and saw it. I was a little puzzled as to why it was over there instead of where it’s supposed to be. Later in the day when I was editing the video it all began to make sense.

ATF is your friend at any mill 😂 lol What band profile do you use? I run Woodmizer 10° double hards 90% of the time 4° on my hard woods!

I use 10° double hards most of the time. I have some 7° that I have used on the harder dry bug killed Douglas fir. I haven’t really noticed the difference though.

Is blue pine commonly found in southern Oregon?
@WilsonForestLands

Yes especially Ponderosa pine with all of the bug killed trees from drought. Not sure how many people are cutting it but there’s plenty of raw material.
