You can see by the comments how much your video is appreciated. I'd just like to add that your editing and especially syncing audio/video is superb. I know that's not so easy, even though you make it look so. As a retired person I have time on my hands and I own a manual Top-Tech geared head DM45 milling machine and am considering heading down the CNC pathway. With help from people like you I think I will go ahead. Subscribed. Thank you.

Nice to see, we did a 4 axis CNC build off of a TAIG and it runs well but we love tool changers because changing to tools in the holders after each program cycle per tool is well tough, we are spoiled. Lance & Patrick.

Very neat work brother but I think your bearings are way too loose (5:37). You need some press fit, just enough to tap bearings in.
@JaakkoF

Those bearings are not seeing any lateral forces, so no need to have a press fit. Sure it would be by-the-book, but doesn't affect the end result here.

Can I switch my motors over the the PM 25mv cnc conversion , but I would just need to get the 1/4" coupler ends to fit onto my Motor shafts correct? I believe the Ball nut screws have a 3/8" for XY and 1/2" for z, but COuldn't I just get the coupled end for the motors to fit the motors shaft correct?

What's the point of using angular contact bearings for the X axis ballscrew if you only have one side? This means the motor's bearings are supporting the other side, which is one of the main reasons bearings are used in the first place.

Won't the love joy coupling add backlash error?
@eformance
@eformance 5 жыл бұрын
Generally not, as long as you use high durometer urethane spiders. Fadal uses these style of couplers successfully. The couplers do wear out over time and need to be replaced. The alternative is to use a bellows style coupler, they are made of metal.

@911dddd911
@911dddd911 5 жыл бұрын
manual mills come stock with ACME threaded lead screws, instead of the ball screws that he installed. ACME is fine for manual machines, but has too much backlash for a CNC machine. Ball screws eliminate most of backlash by using ball bearings to interface between the lead screw and the ball nut, www.barnesballscrew.com/images/1.jpg which is attached to the slide/head/saddle.

This is not how you preload bearings. With this bearing configuration you need precisely machined distancer between inner races of both bearings. Problem is How you will measure the exact distance between the inner races when they are all ready mounted.
@JaakkoF
@JaakkoF Жыл бұрын
Sure you can do it this way, but it isn't the perfect solution. As for measuring the inner distance, there is no need to measure the inner distance if you know how much preload you want on the bearings, as you can look it from the bearing preload chart or measure the needed gap if data is not available.

@dejanbrice8774
@dejanbrice8774 5 жыл бұрын
No because they are not ball screws, they will have too much backlash. The ball screws effectively have negligible amounts due to them running in circular channels which you can actually on the better ones pre-load to tighten the nut up against the screw.

Very interested in your question, i have just bought a WM18 which is the PM 727 equivalent. I am currently planning cnc conversion. I have the steppers and most of the electronics. I failed to find any help with CNC conversions except at huge cost so will use my old X2 cnc mill to machine the parts. John
@Mirandorl
@Mirandorl 5 жыл бұрын
@@john2478 Hi John, out of interest why CNC the mill if you already have the X2? Also did you see the Model Engineer magazine WM18 conversion? Its only an overview and gives little detail on how to do it or costs, but its a nice approach, even features a second high speed spindle. One approach I have seen is to buy a second table and machine away the necessary clearance for the ballscrew housing, that way you dont invalidate your warranty and you can use the manual mill to make the mods. Thats what I would have to do as I do not have second mill sadly. It does seem to be an expensive process no matter what.

hi , why you did not use a bearing in the motor side of the x axis?
@takisbakalis
@takisbakalis 5 жыл бұрын
Since there is a pair or opposite angular contact bearing in the left side the ballscrew can't move, so it seems it's not needed in the right side. Same when you use BF12 mounting blocks, on side is only for alignment. The motor does exactly that. Neat design I would say
