Millions of Americans still waiting on delayed tax refunds. Here's why

Income taxes were due on Monday, April 15. You either owed, or you got some money back. And while Monday was the deadline to file your income taxes, many people who filed early say they still haven't received their refund.
The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but some people say they've waited longer. Some people, who filed as early as possible, say they're still waiting on the IRS to process and issue their refunds.
WHAT WE FOUND
According to the IRS, 101 million people have received their federal refunds as of Friday. That's almost 1% more than this time last year.
Meanwhile, the North Carolina Department of Revenue said they started issuing tax refunds on March 18. Since then, they have issued 820,000 refunds for e-filed returns. According to NCDOR, the processing time may take longer because additional reviews have been put in place to protect people from refund fraud.

yeah this is ridiculous. Ive been waiting since the middle of February. At 30 days, I reached out to irs and inquired about my refund. And they told me I needed to verify my identity,although i did not receive anything in the mail saying that. They transferred me over to the department to verify over the phone. I waited on hold for 30 mins, then the phone hung up . called back for 2 days and kept getting the automated message saying they couldnt take my call because of high call volume. finally called the orignial irs number back and the person tells me that since i dont have a mail out letter, i cant even verify over the phone anyway. then they give me a number to call the taxpayer assistance line and set up an appointment to go in person to verify my identity. when i called them to set the appointment. the lady looks into my file and return and says i dont need to come in and verify my identity, there aren't any flags or anything that would prompt me to verify identity. she says she doesnt know why somebody told me that, she says unfortunately its just taking a long time for them to process returns right now. WTF!!!!

Filed 2/2/24 ... CP05 Notice letter dated 3/18 recvd 3/25. Letter states still reviewing and it could take up to 60 days. So disappointing! Never had any problem getting a refund in the year's filing. I received State refund one week after I filed.

Yes 60 days review is more like 120 days review for some..but to give other countries billions it takes less time. I payed alot in taxes this year but i have to wait 120 days go figure..

First time in my life it’s ever been delayed like this. I always file early and electronically to supposedly avoid these scenarios. I received my state refund quickly, with no issues. Then ammended and paid both state and federal what was rightly owed. It was accepted, there’s nothing to audit, nothing owed, and it’s been MONTHS. Why do we have to pay for a government that doesn’t protect its people and funnels money to God knows where? Why the huge budget increase for the IRS to “hire more auditors”? Who are you auditing? Surely it’s not the millions of non-taxing paying individuals flooding the country. No, that would make too much sense 🙄

@@mamaismama5124 When you e-file you get a text notification or email telling you when your state or federal IRS return was accepted. After that you would normally wait a few weeks to receive your refund(s) via whatever direct deposit you have arranged with your tax filer. “Accepted” generally means you can count on your refund to be issued. Apparently this year, that’s no longer the case.

I thought when you are accepted you have to wait again the irs check your return to get approve, accepted means the verify and everything is fine and wait for next your refund to be send . I filled mine on January 30 2024 and spoke with a representative yesterday may 21 2024 and they told me they are still processing my refund and to call them back July 23 to find out where they're at in processing my refund. Freaking ridiculous.

64 days my friend. I'm sorry. this has been a inconvenience. I'm going to write the Senator today. They seems to be the only source pushing for returns. So far I know over 20 personnel that have waited as long as us and now they have returns due to intervention. Might be a good idea 💡

I filed Feb 12th. I have not gotten. Just called last Friday 19th. They told me have to wait 10 to 12 week starting Monnday 22nd. If within that time get nothing, call them back 😂😂

Going on 120 days waiting & nobody provides any information other than it was “sitting in the errors department” & nobody knows why that happened. 🤔 Uncle Sam is quick to take their deductions on wages & quick to make people pay when they’ve increased their tax bracket BUT they can take MONTHS to process & pay out taxes when owed from the IRS to the people. This is the worst tax year I’ve ever seen! They truly need to train the IRS agents better on the customer service & research skills. I know someone that was placed on hold for 4 hours with a tax advocate, finally the phone died. DO BETTER! 🤦🏻‍♀️

IF THE FED IRS DONT TAKE ACTION TO SEND MY FED TAX REFUND CLAIM BEFORE THE END OF SEPTEMBER, I WILL BE FORCE TO FILE A SUIT WITH U. S. DISTRICT COURT OF FEDERAL CLAIMS. After 6 months of tax refund denial by the fed IRS, anyone can file a suit on them.
