When I tried out the new BF Goodrich KM3s a few months ago as part of the international release I was reasonably impressed , but running on new tyres on relatively dry tracks for just a couple of days is no way to really put a Mud Terrain tyre to the test. So when my mate Angus from BF Goodrich suggested that I fit some new boots to Milo 2 and give the KM3s a proper longer term test I was all for it.
The Federal Mud Tyres that I have been running for the past 12 months have performed pretty well; all up I reckon they have done 24,000 KMs and they have worn down about 2mm from the original 13mm. They are a relatively noisy tyre and are not much good on wet bitumen, but in rocky conditions down in the Flinders they were great, and I have had no punctures and from what we could se no major chipping.
As you can see in the video, on a side by side comparison between the Federal and the KM3 there are some obvious differences, especially in the sypes and mud slingers. But the only real way to find out what the KM3s are like is to get some Ks under the belt and go bush!

Up until July 2017 I worked for Bridgestone for 8 years and they preached about how brilliant their A/T d697's were. When I bought my Prado a few years back, there were already a set of the d697's on it and i found a torn lug on one tyre. As I was heading off on a trip the next day, I had no choice but to fit another set of new d697's to get me going on my holiday and also the fact I was pressured by the company to "support the company that supports me!" Anyway, 32,000kms later (tyres on wear bars), one destroyed tyre in the Flinders and a gut full of unhappiness with those tyres, I stripped them off and fit a set of BFG KM2 265/70/17. Absolutely brilliant tyre!!!! I've now done 40,000kms of hard driving and there's been no punctures (touch wood), less road noise than the Bridgestone A/T, better grip, better handling, better looking, they still have another 40,000kms left and a lot happier guy behind the wheel. I've also turned a lot of my customers onto the BFG's because they just didn't look past the Bridgestone advertising and Propaganda that they push onto the public. My suggestion is, if you want a tyre that performs and lasts, go the BFG's and make sure you rotate your tyres every 5,000kms.

Just done 10thousands ks on my 697 6thousands of that was some mean corrugations, tyres are fine I can't complain.

Spot on mate, 92,000km out of my last 285/75/16 BFG KM2 with still very close to legal tread left (could just pass rego). Decided to get a new set after the old set did a lot of ks and hit 6 1/2y old so I totally agree. The old KM2s are awesome so fingers crossed the new KM3s are just as good.

Agreed roothy! I've had BFG AT's and MT's for the last 9 years and won't ever change I don't think... Just got "balancing beads" put in the AT's 5k ago. Bloody brilliant idea and there's no throwing weights out bush. The only thing that got me off side was when airing down with the ARB jigga one of the little beads got stuck in the valve body and the core wouldn't screw back in. Have you ever tried the balancing beads? PS. I would have cut a finger off to join you on the track down here in the VHC! We just got back from a 2 day trip with the Vic Police 4wd club who support all emergency services and defence personnel who have (and don't have) PTSD. Bloody great group who'd love to have you and the crew along for a run!

Good video Roothy. There must be a huge call for these BFG as I tried to buy a set of KM2s but was told none in Australia. The same thing was said for KM3. This is the second time I have had this problem. BFG really needs to get their shit together when changing their tyre configs to ensure there is no gap between old and new. Great tyres and marketing just shit forethought on getting these things into the market. Just a word on the Federals, had them on my Colorado and at best 32,000ks. The vehicle is maintained and wheel aligned religiously. Maybe too much black top killed them early. Just removed my Pirelli Scorpion muds after 67,000 and really impressed. Not as agressive as the Federals but they were never and issue of road. Trying some Dick Cepek muds cause the BFG,s weren't available.

They look like they’ll gum up with mud easily having the blocks so close together..but that’s why they’d behave so well on the road..should Be interesting

I like the tread pattern of the Firestone Destination MT/2 better it would interesting to see a comparison to the BFG KM3 on wet pavement, mud, wet/dry rock, sand, hard/loose dirt( going strait up/down and at angles).

Spoke to BFG here in Dubai after they gave me a set to test for our show, and they said it had to do with the production process to keep the white. pretty disappointed though. I have just completed 1000 km on mine through very rocky terrain, and man I must tell you i'm very impressed. Good luck with yours. Keep em on all 4

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Would like a 285/85r16(35.1×11.4 for the KM3 and 35.1×11.3 for the KO2)KM3 and K02 instead of a 315/75r16. A moderate width 35 inch tire that isn't a bias ply is something that I would prefer. Toyota even currently makes mid size trucks with 16x7.5 wheels as the standard wheel size. Ruthy what you think about talking to BFGoodrich about the 285/85r16 since you would have better contacts then I do and more influence than I do. On a side note for JK and JL Jeep Wranglers, Ford Ranger Raptors, Ram Power Wagons, have a 17×7.5 rim and come with 285/70r17 so there probably is a market for a 285/80r17(35.1×11.3 or11.4) tires too, that tire size could be included in your talks with BFGoodrich as well.
