The choice of what engine to put into Milo 2 was guided mainly by the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid), which meant staying away from electronic fuel injection and the so called benefit of computers. It didn't take me long to decide on a Toyota 12HT straight six 4L engine that was originally fitted to the 60 Series cruisers. The only problem was finding one at a reasonable price and in decent enough condition. Eventually one popped up on Gumtree and we were off.
Pulling out the engine and gearbox in one piece isn't always possible, but with most of the front end bodywork out of the way it didn't take me and the boys and Opposite Lock Sunshine Coast long to get it out. The real bonus was that when we did a quick test fit to the chassis, it looks like it will be a pretty simple job. But before we get to that stage the gearbox and long block are off to Terrain Tamer to get rebuilt and the injection pump, injectors and turbo are heading to MTQ Engine Systems in Brisbane for a full work over.

If you want an easy solution to getting it in the chassis, use hj47 engine mounts on the block and bellhousing. They bolt straight in. the bellhousing on hj61's are slightly rotated. 47's correct that rotation to make sure the gearbox crossmember lines up. Im currently in the middle of putting a 12ht into a 82 Fj45.

I have pretty fond memories of my Grandfathers old 60 Series which had a turboed 2H motor in it, owned since 1985 Of course I was in Primary school so I didnt know too much about it, Only that it was a Landcruiser and that was enough for me. Hehe It did tour Australia a few times before I was born ('94 baby), And was passenger of numerous road trips with my grandparents when I was young Unfortunately he was never one to take care of it. Always revved the guts out of it (Cold start = Foot to the floor). Then came the rust, Burning oil, Suspension issues. And finally in the winter of 2009 the day of infamy.. The rear diff was shattered beyond recoginition. The old 26 year old 60 series with only 250k had to go As much as dated they are, (loud on the inside and brown interiors - Not my thing Hahaha) I would still love to own one as a doer upper Great Videos Roothy! I put a rebuilt 12HT in my bj73 landcruiser with a heavy duty clutch, rebuilt injection pump and re-cored toyota ct26 bored out for a bigger compressor wheel and fitted a three inch exhaust. I tell you what she pulls like a freight train, I'm not into flogging shit out of my truck but when iv got a big trailer on her she eats hills now. The 1HDT is a nice mechanical diesel too made by toyota until they ruined it with electronic fuel pumps and crap.

Roothy, the 12HT is good, but it cannot touch a 1HD-FT. Especially if that 1HD-FT is intercooled. Sweet buildup though mate.

PTO winch must've been the most $$$ accessory on this? I could have used those carpets too mate. Least it was a 61 and not a 60, it was hard enough watching that Troopy getting slayed!

It's a shame to see that 61 get torn down, they're almost extinct in the UK now and I think nice ones are extinct. I was born in the wrong country ...

Try fitting a stronger return spring on the throttle, my mate Si did that on his HJ61 and he reckons it helped.

The long ratchet one at 2:17 ? SP tools, not sure on model though.

SP 3/8" drive 12v cordless ratchet part no SP81613. But I would recommend the 1/2" drive 16v one (SP81623BU), it is much more powerful. I have one and it is one of my most used tools.

The 61 wasn't it good shape, more bog than steel in the whole body. My mate Pal 'MrLandcruiser' read made sure that what was salvageable went to a good home to keep more 60's alive.
