Thank You so much for uploading this. I have been searching for any Milton Erickson videos I could find. This information can help so many suffering people - It's criminal that Erickson's material is behind a pay wall.

Fascinating video. I'm not a huge fan of the interaction that begins at around 56 minutes. But helpful to see that this sort of thing was part of the 'game' and also a sign of the times.

@@markvictor8776 It could be only that, but it might include being merely also an example of his limitations and the implicit power dynamic still involved in his gentler form of hypnosis. He's a lovely man, I know.

@@markvictor8776 Yeah, Haley's book is a classic, for sure. Over the last 25 years - working in the field and observing many of the greats - I've come to believe that very often we are witnessing different versions of 'transference cures'. And I'm not knocking them. But I think that often mythologies grow around these miracle moments, and if we did careful follow-ups, we'd find that the 'cure' did not stick or the symptom came back in a new form. But, when it comes, to the smaller, more cognitive reframes that allow a person a new perspective, I think he was a master and that kind of change builds on itself quite beautifully. Sometimes, working with a client, I can tell how easy it would be to 'excite' and enchant them into a transformation. I can't bring myself to do it. And I'm not fully comfortable with that decision. But I'm sticking with it.

@@markvictor8776 Fascinating, thanks. Despite hypnotism being such a qualitative event, I do see much of the same mechanistic excitement that comes with all forms of technology in our culture; give me my results quick and fast, and make it easy. I certainly can relate to his desire to write papers in a trance and not deal with them consciously; but I feel fortunate to have to suffer the work. Again, thanks.

I've read "Uncommon Therapy," "My Voice Will Go with You," "The February Man," a few volumes of his collected works, and even tagged along for a few unnervingly deep trances while listening to his recorded inductions, so I'd like to think I'm more than a casual fan, but it seems like now that I've seen behind the curtain he just seems like some ordinary guy who got a lot of good press from his devotees. Maybe his techniques resolved whatever unconscious problems that troubled me over the years, and I never consciously realized it, but for some reason, his manipulations have lost their impact. I don't know, maybe that was his goal all along: to train people to resist being unduly influenced by others.

Can you expand on that comment? Also I have been trying self hypnosis for many many years with no sucsess but for one time. I have been struggling with this - What type of thoughts do you have in your head when you are hypnotized? What does it feel like for you? How isnit differant from your normal waking state of consciousness? Thanks in advance!

@@HarryBallSack1 The trance state is kind of hard to describe verbally, as the part of the mind that verbalizes awareness is more or less shut off. It’s kind like daydreaming, where your mind just drifts from one idea to another. I remember listening to a recording of one of his inductions from his work with Earnest Rossi featured in the book “Hypnotic Realities”, and although can’t remember what I was thinking about, I suddenly realized that I was daydreaming, and that I hadn’t heard a word that Erickson said for the last 10 minutes. I felt so guilty for ignoring him that I listened to the rest of his talk with rapt attention. It’s kind of his general philosophy that confusion precedes enlightenment? I hope that answers your question.

I think you may not have been able to actually understand the depth of this kind of approach. I grew up in the Amazon jungle in the most northwestern part of Brazil bordering Peru. And I found this man, Milton Erickson, 4 years ago through “Uncommon Therapy” and “My Voice Will Go With You.” And I’ve been fascinated ever since and been to several on line classes with Jeff Zeig and others. The reason I mentioned where I grew up is because my first encounter with this man’s work reminded me intensely of how the indigenous culture of my people of my enchanted Amazon. I saw, lived and sensed the daily “magic” and “healing” of the tribal medicine man and there’s something about Milton Erickson’s work that brings tears to my eyes because I I see the beauty and truth of how it works.

@@Foxbrother90 Your, right, I am missing something about what Erickson is trying to communicate. I'm not sure if it's a conscious act of ignorance, or if it is just my temperament that I can't get the message. I'm not sure if your aware of Plato's allegory of the cave, but I see myself as one of those prisoners who refuses to leave the cave because the light of day is overwhelming.

Did Milton like reading fiction? If so, what?

I don’t know what he read but in “My voice will go with you” he recommends that you read the end of a novel first and then start from the beginning. And while you’re reading, you try to guess what kind of events will lead up to that ending that you already know. It’s a way to train your “mind reading skills” and also helps you learn how to write a good story.
