What Does Milwaukee M12 Gen 2 Bring To The Table?
So what changes did Milwaukee bring to the table with their Gen 2 M12 FUEL drills and driver? These Gen 2 tools have brushless motors, and reduced size. In fact, the M12 tool size was reduced by 1-inch in length.
The M12 FUEL Drills changed in length only, same power. They also still have the 1/2″ all metal chuck, and is the only 12-volt tool on the market to have this feature. The 1/2″ check gives you the ability to run 7/16″ shank augers and hole saws. That’s huge! This tool delivers up to 1700 RPM’s and 350 in-lbs of peak torque. Weighing in at only 2.8lbs with battery and 6.6” in length, both tools are so nice to use.
The M12 FUEL 1/4 in. Hex Impact Driver has an output of more than 1,300 in-lbs of torque. The Brushless Motor delivers 0-3,300 RPMs. The impact driver’s speed and torque were increased 25-30%, and Milwaukee added a 4-mode Driver Control to give the user more control of the tool.
A Self-Tapping Screw Mode was added, and is designed to reduce walking when starting self-tapping screws as well as reduce overdriving, breaking, and stripping out screws. This Self-tapping mode allows contractors working with sheet metal to work easier with self-tapping zip or Tek style fasteners.
The best part is that this tool weighs less than 2 lbs. and measuring only 5.1” in length.
Lastly, you’ll notice that the tools belt hook was slightly redesigned allowing it to clip more easily and hang with a better balance.
Milwaukee M12 FUEL Generation 2
Self Taping Screw Mode
The secret sauce behind the M12 Impact drivers “Self-Tapping Screw Mode,” is in the electronics. The tools starts the screw slower to avoid fastener walking. It then senses when it penetrates the metal [by sensing a spike in current]and slows down the tools to avoid stripping the screw.
Not the Biggest or Baddest
We can all agree that the M12 tools are not as powerful as their M18 bigger brother, but for MOST applications, it’s plenty powerful and comes in a lighter and more compact footprint. My point is that you don’t always need the Biggest, Baddest tool to do every job.

Absolutely right, I've used my gen1 m12 fuel impact driver to build an outdoor structure using pt 4x4s after a whole day of work and a full lb. of 3" deck screws I still had half a battery and the lighter weight was much appreciated over my m18 impact driver.....

(It’s already not an America company)Chinese Milwaukee Tool More than 96% Milwaukee tools are made in China. Milwaukee Tool has carried out tool-design job in China since 2015 year, the design jobs also are slowly sent from USA to China. Most plastic materials have been changed from America DuPont, GE to Chinese sources. The red plastic,Nylon,of Milwaukee tool handles/housings has been provided by a Chinese supplier since 2010,originally the Nylons were from DuPont, the Nylons-changeovers caused the handles/housings weak, like screws very likely strapped/slipped in screw holes/bosses, the dimensions are not as much stable. Also black hard plastic for battery pack cases/covers,their materials were changed from GE ABS/PC to a ABS/PC from a Chinese supplier, caused battery pack case more likely broken, brittle, the same story is happening on anti-flam Nylon material of battery frame, changing from DuPont to a Chinese supplier. Lots of bad tools always first are sold to USA because nobody inspects the outgoing, and because in USA Milwaukee Tool has the strongest warranty service ability than in other countries. During Milwaukee production process, more than 5% defects found out by workers, also more defects failed to be screened out. Bad tools include noise as gear, bearing aligned badly, sometimes press trigger no reactions at all, metal parts like shaft, gear, pinion, important screws broken as poor heat-treat, motor stator rubbing with rotator, fine wire laid inside tool broken as poor design and poor workmanship, big percentage of oil leakage for hydraulic tools, etc. 15% chance you will get a bad tool, bigger chance you will get bad tools for nailer, planer, hydraulic tools, cable/tube cutter, as they are first generation of tools for Milwaukee Tool, because of comparing with sawzall, drill, Milwaukee Tool sucks at nailer, planer, hydraulic tools, cable/tube cutter, AC tools, drain cleaner, blower. Milwaukee Tool workers only get less than 300 dollars monthly salary, even plus OT to 276 Hours a month(normal month-workhour is 176 hours, plus 100 hours OT. Chinese law only allows no more than 36 hours OT per month), after OT 100 HOURS for every month,a worker can get 500 dollars monthly salary, this salary very low for living in a big city in China, plus bad working environment(the management has no such safety-first mindset that loud noise but no issuing ear plugs to workers, at dangerous stations very few goggles issued to workers. workers stand more than 10 hours every day during on-duty time), so Milwaukee Tool with huge employee turnover,400% yearly turnover,ie workers averagely work only 3 months for the factory, cause workers without enough experience, lack of training, then unable to ensure good quality. And worse worker- turnover with most Milwaukee Tool’s suppliers. After Milwaukee tools launched one year, Milwaukee Tool will do so-called VE, value engineering ,actually cost-down, change Germany trigger to Hong Kongese trigger even Chinese trigger/switch, change Japanese chuck to Chinese chuck, etc. Milwaukee Tool has a team, 50 people to do the VE. The quality would obviously become worse after the VE. Milwaukee Tool has really bad quality system, lose much profit because of failing to keep quality constant, like critical metal parts broken, every 2 months taking place, no methods to resolve the issue in 10 years, starting from 2008. And always look for cheap materials, cheap suppliers, worker salary is always slightly higher than minimum, only 0.17 dollar higher than hourly minimum salary. Milwaukee Tool has less experiences for making power tools comparing with Dewalt, Makita, Bosch. Milwaukee Tool only has grew fast from 2008 year. Milwaukee Tool copies and compares life test with Bosch, Dewalt tools during new product development stages, even when doing troubleshooting during R&D, would measure dimensions of these competitors’ components. This company is also an ugly company, in 2014, a Hong Kongese manager tried to rape a female employee during their business trip, the company fired him and less than half year, hired him again as a manager, then the female employee left this company and lost her job. In 2015, in its factory dormitory a more severe rape case really took place by a male senior manager to a girl/employee, and this Company didn’t do anything to him, like firing him, like reporting him to police, helping officer to arrest him.

I’ve milked the use of my older tech gear way past true productivity goals and now just switching over to lithium-ion 18v. Your videos have helped me develop a new path in cordless, and M12 will be an important component in that path indeed. Got this email the other day regarding this video, wanted to share as Tim is a Pro and has some good feedback - thanks Tim. Rob, My name is Tim and I am a lead finish carpenter in napa ca. I use the m12 drills to set doors they fit perfectly in my atlas 46 vest drill holster. I'm running tons of grk screws every day. After 20 years in the trade my wrists love the light weight. The doors are getting extremely heavy so less fatigue is a bonus. I also run the M18 fuel line as well. Didn't care for the 10 inch milwaukee chop saw, but got the makita 10 cordless after watching your video on it. It gives me great results and is most like my kapex with the forward controls. The kapex doesn't see day to day action only on high set trim etc. The makita is my daily. We build large custom homes so lots of bodies on site so festool is limited to the end, to many people make me nervous, theft and curious laborers are to blame . So milwaukee cordless and makita chop and the new skill saw table saw with stand are awesome. Bye the way I recommend the bosch gravity rise miter stand with the makita it is killing it on site together. Thanks for your videos they are a big help. Sincerely Tim

Video's like this helped me choose the M12 line, and realize it's not second string to the 18-20v tools. I got the Fuel Drill/Driver kit and the Saw, and built a bar with them. I like that it's strong enough to handle an application like that, but small enough for the smaller delicate work I typically do; which was the driving force behind wanting a smaller drill. The M12 line can provide for all your needs.

Everything you said is correct. I use both platforms 12 and 18 have 3 12v impact drivers in 2 Veto's and one in the packout. 3 18v one in the box, another in the packout and yet another in the truck in molded case which is the surge. 3 12v drills one in packout, another in my shop, and yet another in my main veto bag. 18v drill, 18v impact wrench medium, and the 18v large for lug nuts, 18v 7 1/4 circular saw, band and reciprocating saw. Also carry the 12v hacksaw in the truck. 18v lights two octogons and the larger tru view with ac to boot. Not to mention the new flashlight line up I had to get them all with the charger battery for the phone. Just depends what application comes up on which tool I goto. Great videos with excellent presentation.

I own a small commercial window treatments business and have been using Ridgids 12v driver for years installing hundreds of mini blind and vertical blinds brackets for apartment complex installs. I recently went back to school for HVAC and now upgraded to the Milwaukee M12 driver kit. Ridgid is great for working with wood but getting into thicker material Milwaukee wins hands down. I also have the new brushless Ridgid 18v drivers. One day at work I put my brushless 18v Ridgid drill up against my buddies Milwaukee M12 Fuel and tried drilling a 3" hole through 12gauge steel to vent pvc pipe. My drill kept shutting off on safety overload after only a few seconds. My buddies M12 drilled until we saw a little fire start in the motor housing, then it stopped and started smoking like crazy (I still have the video haha). Mine never made it through and the M12 started working again the next day and still ended up getting the holes drilled. The Ridgid didn't cut it, but again for wood working and Ridgids lifetime tool and battery warranty, Ridgid is still hard to beat.

Great video and explanation on the right tool for the job at hand. I’m a Plumber and use around a dozen of the Milwaukee tool line up in both 12v and 18v. The small 12v drill runs in my carry service tool bag daily. I don’t have this G2 impact yet, but it’s on my short list. Like you said Rob, using the right tool for the job, in my profession it’s installing 1-2" screws for pipe hangers and clips. Installing blocking or removing screws for servicing equipment. This new G2 with self tapping mode looks like it’s going to be great for putting that flu pipe together. Shorter, lighter, faster, what’s not to love. Easier to carry in the tool bag, less fatigue when operating. This one looks like a real winner. - Mike

Great explanation on "Bigger is not always Better" . The right tool for the job/application. In some applications the extra power/torque is not warranted, and can become a" negative " because now you will have to deal with added weight ,bulk and possibly not being able to get the tool into the existing space your working in. These new "Compacts & Sub-Compacts are game changers. The 12V offerings from the various tool makers with their high-power to size ratio makes them a must have item, I currently own( 2) 18V 1/4" impacts (1) 1/2" 18V mid-torque wrench AND a 3/8" 18V Sub-Compact impact wrench plus my trusted 1/2" 18V drill. I will be buying the Milwaukee 2598-22 combo kit to round out my tool closet to make sure I have the right tool for the application.

Hey Scott Grafer, Well, the comments here are kiling me, haha. I'm about to start my first job as an electrical apprentice. I have the M18 Fuel Impact and Hammer Drill combo (had for a couple years). And I just picked up the 2720-20 Sawzall (I think I'd rather the M18 Fuel Hackzall, but can't get locally yet). Anyway everyone seems very satisfied with their M12 Impact and Hammer Drill tools, and 12v Milwaukee in general. You're using the M12 Impact for 1" holes? Through what material? And which reaming attachment do you use with it? The Dewalt, the Klein? I'd really appreciate any input you can share on your experience with these M12 drivers. Also, I'm curious what you use for cutting EMT. Thanks very much.

The M12 Fuel Gen2 is the size I wanted from the Gen1, the Gen1 drill isn't that much smaller than the full-size M18 drill. Also very true on not needing 18 volt on all projects, 18v is heavy. 12v is great for woodworking as well. When I need to drill with large bits the 18 volt comes out, otherwise 12v is more useful.

Robert I agree that there's a need for 12 volt drills and impact drivers. Anybody who's had to lug around a tool bag would agree that the lighter weight is a godsend. not to mention that smaller tools means you have more room to fit in all the tools you're going to need. most of my jobs require power tools so I bought and use a Bosch jigsaw a one handed recip saw and I'm trying to locate the worx compact circular saw. however I use the 18 volt hammer drill and impact driver because of the necessary run time for my work. but yes the Milwaukee 12 volt drill and impact drivers are not toys the price tag will make that evident.

Have you tried to install Threaded screws or bolts with the dill ? I just purchased the drill hammer/dill and impact driver I have found that the new E clutch is not working properly with threaded screws no matter what setting I put it on it over Tightens the Threaded screw

Totally agree. I wouldn't be without my Festool CXS Drill/Driver and that is only 10.8v but has terrific power for its size. A lot of the time my 18 volts are just not needed.

I use the M12 all the time for driving 6/32 and 8/32 bolts for switches/ receptacles and light fixtures. But I need the M18 for lags and shields on a concrete wall. M12 and M18 both have a place on this electricians truck.

Love the vid! Is it possible to get a Milwaukee gen 2 fuel vs the new Hilti 12v line. As in the Impacts, hammer drills, and drill gun.

Would like you to test some 12v against 18v to get an idea of the real world difference. Also it would be great to look at other brands with 12v ranges, Bosch for example. Thanks Rob for your great videos.

The Artist formally known as Dick Dastardly the 18v will always have more power and kick, the 12v will have just enough to get it done. Basically. Look up tools in action I think, he has a video comparing the two

last year i bought m18 set of tools for work, then a month back i got tired of taking my work set from work to home and back every time i needed it so i went with the m12 fuel series but i liked the way it felt and realized it was capable of doing nearly all the work i do at work so now its on the work van.

As someone who now has this set, I can say that they're pretty dope. The original m12 fuel stuff was good but wasn't small enough to justify the step down in power. I can't believe how much power is coming out of this small of a package with the Gen 2's. Aside from the garbage Chuck on the drill (which I replaced with a ROHM Extra RV 1/2") it's a great drill. The ROHM Chuck ads about 1/4 to 3/8" compared to the Milwaukee Chuck but to me it's worth my bits not slipping.

HaloGamer401, You can add an "aftermarket" chuck to the drill?? Really? That's cool. Do you have the hammer drill version? I'm looking into buying this kit at the moment. I have M18 Gen 2 drill and impact now. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. Good overview of the M12 line. I'd ponder a guess as to why so many assume 18v is the more "professional" or serious option. Many of us used 14.4v for years after seeing the really old 12v stuff offer unacceptable performance. I don't know how many times my father in-law's 12v drills were dead and useless. So many used batteries lying around. So we all went to 14.4v to get something that actually worked. And then, in my case, when the 14.4v finally gave up the ghost, the naturally assumed upgrade was to 18v. But that assumes same motor technology. Well it looks like brushless motor technology has changed the playing field. Which is a huge benefit to us used to big, clunky and heavy 18v cordless drills. Thanks again for the good review.

I'll add that for the rare occasions I need more power, I'm just pulling out the 110v corded drill. No need for a "beefy" 18v (and expensive) brushless drill. Drilling out deep studs, or hammer drilling concrete? Corded every time. Why destroy your lightweight, expensive batteries drilling for 10 minutes through concrete?

Hi, I'm DIYer which need to drill in 2"-3" plywood. Does the M12 Fuel Gen 2 could handle it? It doesn't matter if it would be the fastest, just to make properly. Thanks!

Ive bought the set its in the mail. I currently own hammer drill and impact in m18. Hoping m12 can be lighter in application such as drywall and 2in deck screws. Hope the impact can hold up. As for the mini drill, thats for the pain in the arse wiring jobs.

I love Milwaukee tools including the m12 line. But they aren’t necessarily much lighter than the m18. For example the surge impact is 2.0 and 2.1 lbs for the m12 and m18 respectively. Is it worth a second line of tools/batteries over 0.1lbs?

Would be interested in a head to head on 12v tools Rob. I bought the Bosch 12v set last year, I rarely even take my 18v drill and impact to jobs any more. The 12v ones will do almost anything and so easy to use especially above your head. I know you did a review on the Bosch 12v some time ago, which is better? Bob...
