Milwaukee Heated Jacket Battery Test Extravaganza! (www.modsandprojects.com/milwa...)
The Milwaukee heated jacket and heated hoodie products come in several different styles to match your needs. As a part of Milwaukee’s M12 line, the heated jackets and sweatshirts have a higher voltage pushed through the internals than is typical in other heated jackets, keeping you much warmer. We recently discovered Milwaukee has an 18V to 12V adapter permitting the use of larger 18V batteries with your heated gear for incredibly heating longevity. Note: It's worth mentioning that larger battery capacities, and 18v to 12V adapters do not allow the heated garments to output more heat (higher temperature), they only effect how long the battery/ heating effect will last. With so many different 18V and 12V batteries to choose from, we needed accurate data on how long each battery would last (battery life).
When I first started this test, the concept was simple… How long would the battery’s that came with my Milwaukee Heated jacket, the 12v2Ah (12 volts 2 Amp-hours) and Milwaukee heated hoodie (12V1Ah) last?
Once I started testing I began to realize there were many more considerations such as: multiple power settings (High, medium and low) in addition to, multiple zones: Jacket Zone (for your torso) and the Pockets Zone (for your hands)
Then, I discovered the Milwaukee 18V to 12V adapter, and it opened the door to even MORE questions…
How long could we run our Milwaukee heated jacket with these larger 18V batteries?
Would the larger integrated 18V batteries fit in the rear-integrated pocket of the jacket/ hoodie?
Would the 18V stepped down to 12V scale vs.the true 12V batteries?
Now that the questions were defined we needed some answers!
We rounded up 6 different Milwaukee batteries of various sizes and configurations. The final contestants were:
12V1Ah - This is the stock battery that came with my Milwaukee hoodie.
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, as intended in both the jacket and the hoodie
Available in single and double packs.
2V2Ah - This is the battery that came with my Milwaukee 2-Zone Jacket.
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, as intended in both the jacket and the hoodie
Available in single and double packs.
12V6Ah - A uniquely shaped battery, sort of a hybrid between a 12V and 18V in shape.
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, It fits horizontally. You feel it a bit more than #2.
18V2Ah - The slimmest version of the 18V batteries.
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, It fits comfortably, feels about the same as #1 and #2. I recommend this one for the jacket, not the hoodie.
18V5Ah - The most common 18V battery. Standard with most tools
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, It fits., you can feel it there, but if you have a larger frame you should be ok. I recommend this one for both jacket, and the hoodie.
18v12Ah - The Monster! The Largest Milwaukee battery made.
Does it fit in the rear battery pocket: Yes, Surprisingly it DID fit in the rear jacket pocket. It’s HUGE so be prepared for some extra bulk.
Bonus: Another crazy 12V option you may not have thought about - Milwaukee 12V to Aux port in car/ Extension cable
This adapter provides nearly unlimited run time to your milwaukee heated jacket or hoodie. The 7-Foot coil cord allows users to neatly route their cords no matter the vehicle type. Designed with safety in mind, the adapter incorporates a break-away feature in case a quick exit from a vehicle is necessary.cable. The Break away feature also allows you to use the included 7-foot coil cord as a separate extension cord that can be used with any of the batteries above (hunting/tree stand etc). Going even further... The above AUX extension cord could even be used with this alligator clip adapter to connect your Jacket to a large car or deep cell battery as the ultimate power source! Now onto the tests!

What is great about the Milwaukee offering is the speed at which batteries charge. Two plain 2.0 m12 batteries can have you running non-stop because by the time one is dead, they other has been charged for hours. That's the main reason I'm going with this over standard offerings that use battery banks. Plenty of chargers at work, too.

UPDATE: The 3Ah Genuine M12 is our new favorite battery for heated gear, it's the small 12v form factor and packs a punch! Links to all gear used in the video in the description! is my Also, I wanted to share another important tip I did not mention in the video: If you are buying a new jacket or sweatshirt make sure you get one that fits as snug as possible to get the maximum heated effect. Loosely fitting heated apparel looses most of its heat into the air gap between the garment and your body if if you don't get proper fit! Any questions please ask below!

Just a Tip, put all the batteries in watt-hours, its listed on the bottom of every battery it will tell you very quickly the amount of power you have in the pack. This way it doesn't matter the voltage or the amp hours. for example the 4.0 18v and 6.0 12v have the same watt hours 72.
@civildiscourse2000
@civildiscourse2000 6 ай бұрын
Right on. Energy in watt-hours (Wh) is power in watts times time in hours. Power in watts is volts x amps. So.... energy in watts hours can be calculated as volts times amperes x time in hours. You can confirm the OP's observation by looking at any battery - e.g. a 2 Ah, 12 V battery, and see the rating in watt-hours (tiny text) is indeed 12 V x 2 Ah = 24 Wh. Handy to know if your old eyes can barely pick out the watt-hour rating in that super tiny text.

I just bought the vest and a charge station with the 12v2 and 12v6 batteries from Home Depot. I like it and I'm happy this video exists because I now know to use the 12v6 battery instead of the 12v2. The 12v2 only lasts about 2 hours before needing to charge but it does charge fast with the power station.

Great chart…. IMO the best option to go with is the compact 3.0 m12 battery (same physical size as the 1.5 and 2.0 [there is no 1.0 that I’m aware of]). Gives you about 3hrs w/both zones set to high on the jacket, and the smallest footprint/weight with factory Milwaukee batteries. Another option is to pony up for the flat pack Motion batteries and Milwaukee barrel connector adapter. They make up to 5.0ah 12v and even 16v (wonder if that would make the jacket even warmer?) batteries in that style. For like $132 you can get two of their flat 3.2ah batteries, charger, and their battery adapter to work w/Milwaukee + Dewalt jackets. Probably half the physical size of the factory m12 battery and power source in a much better form factor. I think it’s about $240 for two 5.0 batteries and the charger. Website is “its motion electric” i believe.

Great test! 1ah is really 1.5ah but anyone using anything under 2ah shouldn't be. I have a couple Milwaukee 3ah and a few of the Amazon 2.5ah batteries seem to work just fine in the heated gear. When the wife and I have 5 heated items, the genuine 3's are too spendy when they all have batteries in them ready to go.

My hoodie with a 3ah battery runs for 7hrs on low. Update: so I broke down and bought the 6ah battery, I started running it on low at 6:30am I used it all day with my heated jacket (works great together since my jacket is 1 size too big) it lasted from 630 all the way until I got home. I shut it off when I got home at 5:30pm and had 1 bar which means about 3 more hours of runtime let's assume it was almost dead the battery lasted 11hrs straight so my 6ah batt2er lasts anywhere from 11-12hrs real world performance. My 3 ah battery lasts around 6hrs on low I just got tired of having to walk to the lunchroom and changing batteries, I'm buying a second one for my jacket soon so I can carry one or two 3ah batteries for back ups

It's all a matter of watts (or volts x amps = watts) i.e. 12v x 1ah = 12 watts, or 18v x 12 ah= 216 watts. So if the jacket draws 5.5 watts an hour you can do the math pretty easily. If you want to get really technical, hook up a DC amp meter in line and figure out the exact power being consumed in all 6 modes.
@ModsAndProjects

You certainly could use math to determine battery duration except you would need to measure the draw of each of the modes. Plus it was more fun to witness each in real time :)

I rode my motorcycle today in 26 degree weather to work..60 minute ride at highway speed with just the M12 toughshell heated jacket and the toughshell gloves. both set to high. today I tried the new CP3.0 AH small foot print M12 (same size physically as the 2.0). I was curios was to the power consumption on a miluakee heated jacket on hi (red) both zones on. interestngly with a 2.0AH on an 1hr trip I arrive with 2 red leds remaining whn checked with the USB recharge power source. BUT..more interestingly with a CP3.0AH on an 1hr trip I also arrive with 2 red leds remaining whn checked with the USB recharge power source. SO...it appears the the 4 led indication is not good insight since you would expect that the CP3.0 would be 33% consumed when ever the same usafe time and heat setting would indicate 59% consumed on a 2.0. 4 LEDS cant represent 33% . 1 LED us alwats 25% and 2 LEDS is always 30%. theres no way to show 1.5 AH used out of a CP3.0 batttery.
