I bought the Gen 3 less than 2 years ago and it’s served me well. I’ve definitely had some minor issues with the trigger for the drill but other than that it’s been a workhorse on the job site. Been using it for all kinds of applications on a custom new home I’m working on and it has not disappointed.

Vince,this is not a problem. It is normal to lock if it is sudden. The function is called Anti-kickback. It is based on a gyroscopic sensor inserted in the machine. It detects the sudden rotation of the machine, a phenomenon similar to the blockage of a drill in the material, and has the role of interrupting the power supply of the machine to protect the user during work from a possible recoil. It can be disabled from the OneKey app. Also from the application you can change the sensitivity of this function: High Medium Low

Got a gen 3 this past Christmas and I never looked back. This tool is amazing and has so much power

I’ve been using my gen 3 for a couple years now as the power source for my ice auger. It’s paired with a 12amph battery and it drill 8inch holes in 3 ft of ice without any issues. One weekend I drilled over 60 holes in 3ft of ice and even left it outside overnight in below freezing temps. It’s a beast

My very kool wife recently got me the gen 3 hammer drill starter kit as a birthday gift, personally it was a long over due upgrade to replace my old Hitachi. No comparison hands down. At work my daily "driver" is the infoumas Dewalt 20v XR Max which is also a blessing as it has always lived up to its name. With that said, the more compact Fuel gets my vote, to this day every time I pick up M18 I'm still caught off guard by just how good it feels in my hand. Then pull the trigger and holy$#!7 it's like a kid on Christmas!!! Dewalt brings it with a solid 8. Kudos Milwaukee you and Wifey both rate 10's and also the only two I ever drill with at night... Gen 3 is a great drill. It’s well rounded, and defiantly for the pros. It’s not gonna be the fastest in every category, but you get a lot of power for the size. I’ve never ran into any material I couldn’t drill through, would recommend 100 percent.

I picked up my gen2 a while ago on sale, and it's been a beast for me. I've drilled countless holes with it and it's never failed me

I've got both drills and to be honest I find the gen 2 reliable and the abuse I put it through its amazing its still alive. The trigger on gen 3 is really weird... but thanks for pointing it out I thought I was the only one Vince that had this problem. Much respect from NEW ZEALAND

Had the same thing happen to me on my gen 3. I accidentally dropped it in oil and got completely submerged in oil and it does not do that anymore. Must of fixed itself. Lol

I have gen 3 and do decks...always use it from start to finish drill half inch lag bolt holes through multiple 6x6 and 4x4 sometimes 30 in a row on blazing summer days..never has failed for even a second. one of the best tools on the jobsite

The Gen 3 hammer drill is amazing. Only had it a couple months but it has completely impressed me. But I was coming from a Porter Cable so there was plenty of room to improve. Picked up the combo with the Surge impact driver; love that too.

I have Gen 3. I've not noticed any problems at this point. Best hammer drill/driver I've ever owned.

I love my milwaukee tools, even to this day im still impressed with them. I have noticed the trigger lag before, it seems to happen often between my hammerdrill and impact for some reason. I have noticed tho that it seems to do it more often when i gradually press down the trigger. I am using full fuel lineup of gen 3 hammerdrill and impact along with sawzall and skillsaw. I work in the hvac trade and having the extra power and speed for metal working really helps. I even use some milwaukee handtools.

I have the Gen 2, it's among one of my favourite tools. I came across the "trigger glitch" a few times but that's about it.

I remember thinking “dang I hope mine doesn’t do that” when I watched this video last week. 2 days later I pick it up at work and sure enough it stopped working off and on then stopped every time I pulled the trigger. I tried it the next day and worked fine...

I have the gen 3 for roughly a year or more. I use it daily. Still works awesome

Thanks for your review I’m still running the 2nd gen m28 hammer drill probably 8 years old now I had a clutch gear box malfunction at one point and Milwaukee took care of it their warranty department is definitely great to work with.

For what it's worth, I have absolutely loved my GEN 3 hammer drill/driver. I bought my first house four and a half years ago, and it was the very first Milwaukee tool that I purchased. Needless to say, I became fully invested in the line! I'm just a regular DIY homeowner, but I have over 25+ of their tools, seven different batteries, and every single one has been great, outside of one or two that I'm not incredibly fond of, but that's for another day. My bad, I digress. LOVE this drill...Period. I have over-the-top put it through the wringer, and it has come through for me clutch!! 110% recommend. Love the videos as always, Cheers. Chase

I have the Gen 3 Drill, M18 Brushless Drill and the M12 Gen 2 Hammer Drill and 6 impact drivers from Milwaukee. I use to be Dewalt guy after purchasing the Atomic kit and the new a Dewalt 998 Drill. Switch to Milwaukee because of your videos. Now I have 31 Milwaukee tools... “Let’s go baby”...😊😊😊🤣🤣🤣

At my company, we have gone through 5 of the gen 3s. Each one only lasted less than 5 months. Each one had different issues. From seized motors to bad switches. We have had our gen 2s in the field for many years with no issues. All in all, they are still nice drills because we have other gen 3s that have worked flawlessly. Milwaukee was great and fixed or replaced our bad drills.

I own a gen 3 and I love it. Previously I bought a gen 2 and this was smoking right off the box. Both of them One Key.

I’ve had my gen 3 set for several months now. Super happy with the operation. I will admit, I had to exchange my hammer drill, brand new, because the chuck wobble was insane. Took it in, showed them the wobble. Gave me a fresh drill. Night and day. It happens with every brand I’m sure, but I’m happy with the drill.

The two things that come to my mind are, 1 I don't know if that hammer drill has it or not but it may be some kind of anti-kickback because it seems to only do it when you're twisting the drill while you're pulling the trigger. 2 this is probably less likely but low-quality switches and potentiometers can stop working with the slightest amount of dirt or debris so I would try to take the drill apart and clean the switch and look for dirt in there while you're at it. I say it's unlikely because it's a power tool and should have a sealed high-quality switch but it could be some dirt from the factory, I've seen it before in brand new switches and potentiometers. These are just educated guesses, I don't own this drill personally.

Boy I'm sure glad I caught this video. I'm a finish carpentry contractor and I had a job last week where I had to secure an aluminum threshold to the slab beneath a new entry door. Drilled three 1/4" holes about 2-1/2" deep using the hammerdrill mode.....no problem. A little while later picked up the drill (2706-20, second generation), pulled the trigger.... nothing. Had to drill other holes in slab with a conventional drill/driver (no hammerdrill mode). This took forever (wasted time). Took the drill to the local Milwaukee service center, pulled the trigger in front of the tech,,,,again nothing, pulled the trigger again and the drill fired right up. I can't have tools where I have to guess as to whether it's going to function or not, so I was willing to buy the third generation 2806-20 just to put the issue behind me. Very disappointing to see you're having the identical problem. The drill is still under warranty so I called Milwaukee and they said send it in....more wasted time (and money). Very Frustrating

I mostly use my gen 3 to drill 8" diameter holes in ice. It does this at 1" per second! I freakin love it🤘

I have gone through maybe 4 or 5 DeWalt hammer drills and I'm still on my 1st Milwaukee hammer drill. I have 9.0 battery so I affectionately call it my "1/2 ton 1/2 inch". Works awesome. Always. One of the guys I worked with/for burned out his two DeWalts drilling a sill plate after encountering an anchor. Handed him my Milwaukee and he was through in a couple of minutes even with a burned up hole saw. Might be heavier, but, for me, it's well worth it. Makes the job go quick.

I really like mine. Use it mostly for drilling small holes in concrete. Small being 5/32 to 3/16. With a good bit I never have an issue.

So great to help people that don't know. I've had a dewalt do that same trigger thing back in the day.

I'm sure it's fine if your using it for what Milwaukee intended. The problem I had was that I used the gen. 2 for two years mixing drywall mud, floor leveler, smaller batches of concrete and mortar, etc. Never had an issue with it. The gen. 3 didn't last a week doing that sort of work before the gearbox grenaded itself. Of course to be fair that's well beyond the intended use of the tool and Milwaukee will tell you that, but the fact is the gen. 2 did it just fine with it, as did my older Makita, and a coworker's Multivolt that I've used a number of times. The small size is clearly a trade off for some robustness, which some will be fine with, but Id personally rather have a much more durable, marginally larger tool.

I'm a 65 yr old grandmother of 4 and I love using that Gen 3 hammer drill with my "special" attachments.

I have both of them 2 sets each. I've been blessed with a Milwaukee store near me. It's kinda of a addiction. I love it! Both drills are amazing. The have been used almost 6 days a week everyday and the work flawlessly. Thank you for the videos! Always watching

I have gen 1 from 5 years ago! Never had an issue.

Love my milwaukee tools. Does it run hotter then my gen 2 yes. But never had smoke because the gen 3 has an overheat safety. I did trigger that once. But in the drills defense I was using a 17.5 inch by 1 inch auger bit to drill 10 inch deep holes in a stump. A task my gen 1 could NOT complete by even an inch and a half. So summary is it generates more heat but much more power. The more power it uses the more heat it creates .simple enough. But milwaukee knows this and thats what all that fancy schmancy red link smart tec is for, to preserve your rools by allowing them to cool down to safe operating temps. BTW love you guys at VCG

I had mine (gen 3) warrantied a few weeks ago for that intermittent switch. I used the e service to have it fixed. Intermittent switch/no power was an option to choose in the drop down menu when asked what issues it was having. Very easy warranty process. Turn around was around a week and a half.

I've been using my M12 Fuel hammer drill and impact driver daily for about a month now and they do everything I need them to do in a nice compact package.

Vince, liked the way you talked about “running hot” & being “relative”; which is so very true. Do kinda miss the second selector sometimes; cuz I’ve noticed once in a blue moon, the gen 3 selector will move out of a mode from using it (doesn’t happen often, but is annoying when it does). Haven’t had any trigger issues as of yet, & winder if you have some dirt/dust or even bad connection from using it (something that could be fixed relatively fast & easy). Definitely happy with the gen3 though & not disappointed one bit that I bought it, it’s a beast & goes pretty much through anything Cheers✌🏼

I too have had a trigger issue with my Gen 3 Hammer Drill. I thought it was the battery connection, but it's so hard to duplicate on demand (though, congrats on catching it in your video) that I never determined the cause. I'm afraid that if I send it back to Milwaukee, they'll try it, it'll work, and they'll just send it back. Best case would be for them to discover what the problem is and do a recall or offer to fix all our drills. Other than the trigger, it's an incredible tool.

My gen 3 impact driver does the same thing with nothing happening when I pull the trigger sometimes.. I like my gen 3 but my Makita XDT16 is my number 1 go too

within my first week of using gen 3 drill i knew there was an issue with the switch or a contact within drill took it back to get fixed, since then has been 100% have also had intermittent problems with my impact driver but so rarely that its not a concern did not go at first trigger pull maybe a handful of times in the year ive owned it. have not however had any issues with the collet on impact or chuck on drill

I bought this online and when I opened it I was upset cause of the size so I went to KZfaq to check it out n now I’m hype can’t wait to use it at work

Love my gen 3. It’s powerful and compact. I have a similar issue with the trigger. Usually can replicate it by pulling the trigger twice if rapid succession. The second pull it won’t operate.

Had mine for 2 years and the drill and impact are both beasts and haven't had any problems! I have had the glitch every now and then, but it is so infrequent that I'm not worried. If anything, the drill needs some sort of kickback control because it's got so much power!

Love my Gen3 Hammer drill and Impact combo. Got a great deal on it and it makes me 💰. Can't argue with that brother 👊💪👍. Got some foam and put it in a Packout box. Tough as nails!!! Great video as always brother. I'd be sending your drill back to Milwaukee for warranty work with that glitchy trigger!!! Hopefully they do more than they did with your impact cullet lol.

I have the Gen3 and the only thing that i wasn't happy about, was a burr on the the overhang over the trigger, that actually cut my finger slightly when turning the selector switch for the first time. Took some sandpaper to remove it and never had a problem with it again. Just as you say: the power and compactness is incredible.

I also have the Gen1 and replaced it with the Gen3 because of that same trigger switch issue. I opened the drill case on my Gen1 and realized that the forward/reverse switch was full of dust and debris. After cleaning I had no issues of trigger failure for a long time. When it reoccured I opened it again only to find the forward/reverse switch dirty again. I'm no Milwaukee service expert but I believe that is where the issue is.

I had this happen to my Milwaukee 1/2-inch impact. In my line of work if any of my tools go bad it can be the difference between getting the job done and getting paid, or not. Lucky for me I own a 1/2 in air gun and managed to get the car out of the shop. Still, when I pay a lot for tools they better work when I need them to. Now I didn't pay SnapOn price for my 1/2 inch Milwaukee, but the better warranty from Milwaukee was what made me want to go that route. I was able to exchange my impact for a new one and never had an issue since. I'm in the market for a new drill and seeing this is causing me to have PTSD 😂

Had a brand new one delivered to me from HD & the trigger was defective internally. With a few pulls it just fell out. So I believe there's some quality control that needs be looked at it that area.

Love the vid VCG, keep it up. I have the Gen 3 as well and have experienced the glitch also. Other than that I love it. My friends that have Rigid, Ryobi, DeWalt, can't believe the power from such a small package.

2nd gear failed on my 3rd gen after a year of heavy heavy use but milwaukee fixef it for free and were back in action deff my favorite handheld drill/hammer drill

I love the Gen3 hammer drill. I just recently got it and it's now my go-to drill along side the Gen3 hydraulic impact driver. I bought it because I was having a lot of issues with the trigger switch on my Gen1. Also the new chuck is fantastic. The knurled edge on the chuck makes it simple to get a good grip on the bits.

I can't complain about my gen. 2 either. It's served me well for several years now.

I just bought it right after I got sick with the virus so I haven't gotten to use it yet. I honestly can't wait to put it to the test myself

I two use the gen3 hammer drill. I did notice the problems with the click but it never failed me! Its a top quality machine👌🏼

Im a plumber and I love mine... probably my favorite milwaukee tool other than my cordless hole hawg. I have noticed that same glitch on both my hammer drill and fuel impact driver. But its pretty rare.

I have gen2 and I still love it and use it everyday some 3-4 years later

I have had the gen 3 since black friday. Since then I have not had any issues. Never has the trigger glitched. Nor have I felt it get really hot. But i dont have to work my tools as hard as other people. But I have loved my milwaukee fuel tools...

I have the gen 3 and I love it!!! I will say I have experienced the dead trigger pull but my results are the same as yours 1 or 2 more pulls and she's running hot again lol. It's definitely not something that I lose any sleep over and I would recommend it or any other Milwaukee offerings to anyone interested in getting new tools they have yet to let me down. To expand on that I have had to send tools in for repair before and the process is painless with a very reasonable return time.

Waz up Vince. I’ve returned 4 of the gen 3 Fuel hammer drills with the same issue. Plus the forward/reverse selector switch stuck on several of them. Made it difficult to depress the trigger. It was very annoying. I’m pretty sure Milwaukee thought I was crazy. Keep up the good work!

I have this drill. Specifically the 2804. No fancy modes. It replaced my DCD996. The DCD996 ran excellent and cool BUT had no thermal/low voltage protection. I used it driving thousands of SDS screws. 3-7in and 12in. You DO NOT run any Li-Ion hard on the last bar. So as soon as the DCD996 hit 1 bar, it went on the charger or rapidly cooled then charged. Well, let a laborer use it, explained to him the 1-bar thing, he obviously doesn't understand English or Spanish despite being a Spanish SPEAKING Mexican. He ran the first battery flat, i told him to not do that, he ran the second battery flat, grabbed the third battery, and "no trabaja". Bought the Milwaukee 2804 because i wanted the quiet Surge 1/4in for a while. Immediately i noticed the 2804 gets hot. Uncomfortably hot. It's concerning how hot it gets. And i don't think it's transmission heat. So side handle as a heat sync doesn't matter. It's motor heat. It gets so hot i need to wear gloves. HOWEVER! It has never failed. Thermal protection on the battery shutdown the batteries temporarily more than once on the XC5.0a. And I've run the drill so hard with the 12in SDS and HD12.0a battery that the pistol grip was flexing and i had to put the side handle. Ran the 12.0a to one bar. The 2804 takes the abuse like no other. It gets HOT! Especially running in a 12in SDS in 2nd gear only. So i run them in most of the way in 2nd then do the high torque part in 1st gear. This keeps it from melting hot. Oh, and the efficiency? Much better than the yellow or green brands.

I have had that similar glitch with my M12 Hammer Drill. I was on a job and out of the blue it started doing doing that. I was using it to drive drywall screws, after this happening several times I looked at the drill to try to figure out what was going on. I had it in drill mode so I switched to driver mode and that seemed to do the trick. But I'm not convinced 100% that was the problem because that never caused a problem in the past. But I really haven't had to use it extensively since, so I haven't recreated the problem. Tell Nick and Mikey J what's up and you guys stay safe.

I've had both the Makita and Milwaukee impact drill driver set. Sold the milwuakee mostly because of the impact Chuck and trigger problems. Plus Makita has a better faster charger included in their set in my opinion. But the drill was okay. Edit: I love their automotive power tools and innovation. I'm not being a hater just honest :p

I had the same problem with my gen 3 so I bought another gen 3 and sent the sometimes working drill it into Milwaukee. Milwaukee warrantied it fixed it and sent it back to me no charge. Now I have 2 gen 3s

yea same i have the gen 3 too and have the same problem with trigger dosnt happen alot but still love the tool and its got so much power

It's on a slow compression of the trigger. It's a safety feature to keep it from being triggered in a bag/toolbox if not locked.

Hey brother! I’m still rocking my Gen 1!! I don’t even know how many years old it is! I use it everyday as I’m an electrical contractor and have my own business. I’m talking I still drill out houses with this thing! With long auger bits 7/8” and 3/4” wide and drilling Thousands of 6” holes in drywall for recess cans! Drills are amazing! It is starting to get a little loose in I can start to feel some flexing in the handle when under big load, so might have to get a new one soon but I don’t think this ones ever going to quit!!!

I’ve had the chuck lock up on two of them now. Haven’t really had the trigger issues. They got tons of power. I only bought it because I lent my DeWalt dcd997b to my old man who lives a couple hours away and I needed a hammer drill for a new project I was starting. That dcd997b has been a beast for me and I’ll use every time over the Milwaukee once I get it back.

Yeah my gen 3 tripped me out a couple times. Does same thing. Never let me down. Other guys used my drills over other brands while we built our new shop for my job at the city. Milwaukee was and is golden. And my drills are awesome.

I have the gen 3 drill driver and gen 3 impact. Both have very rarely had the trigger issue. They always come right back to life so it's more of just a small annoyance. However, without question I'd still take both of them over my previous Dewalt drill and impact. Hands down, the gen 3 is the best I've ever owned or used.

Gen 3 drill and driver kit it the most powerful set I feel you can buy, me being a commercial GC I rarely ever see myself using the power and I works against me, seatings or not and the heat and glitch are a big drawl back for me

My gen 3 quit working completely after about 10 uses but the warranty was hassle free got it back in about a week works fine now

When my gen 2 chuck messed up Milwaukee replaces it with a gen 3. I sometimes go to grab and gen 3 and get the gen 2. Both awsome drills

Love milwaukee. We have DeWalt at work (Controls Engineer and Industrial Electrical/Maintinance) and it was ok but when I had to shop for tools to do home remodeling..milwaukee seemed like the only option to me. Their line is just so versatile. So many more tools on the platform and, well built. I started getting Milwaukee in at work now. Love me some milwaukee!

I have two Gen-3 hammer drills for nearly 2 years and so far no issues.

I have to drill a lot of holes for conduits and have noticed the gen 3 heats up very quickly, other then that I have had no problems will have to try it with the handle next time and see if that helps

Mine does that with the trigger but so does the 1/4" impact. Hope to see this issue (along others) resolved next gen.

Good review. My brushes impact driver does the same thing, with how it doesn't run sometimes. Super random but mostly what fixes it is a good solid blow of air to the battery contacts. I think it's a sensitive heat sensor maybe... IDK. But Bosch replaced 2 tools, without questioning, for me. So strange but not a deal breaker.

Vince I have Milwaukee drill I bought in 2016 had all kinds of Chuck problems took them to their service center here they replaced the chucks several times so finally had me send them to Milwaukee directly and they sent me 6 new ones in 2017 and I haven’t had any problems since but they didn’t tell me what they did.

Love my Gen 3, amazing power but also stops when big bit catches. I think that your trigger might be related to accelerometer that trips when it catches. Trigger seemed to not work when your drill had motion.

I have the 2nd gen Hammer drill and I love it! I have used it for everything and abused it. Yet it keeps going. I did have the chuck start getting stuck, but Milwaukee fixed it under warranty. I will always buy their tools! Edit: The electric clutch is awesome! No parts to wear out. Edit2: I have experienced that same glitch with my Gen 2. Taking the battery out and reinserting it solves the issue.

Mine done this straight out the box. Common issue with em. Same as the chucks letting go
