Words are simply a series of sounds, a way of articulating and give meaning to an experience with a language. A healthy understanding of a new language is the art of being able to connect these thoughts to words and communicating that with a person.

Great video. I've had more or less the same mindset as you do for a long time, and this is something that I've been thinking about a lot lately. Everyone always talks about profeciency in the 4 language skills but I never hear anyone talk about "emotional fluency". If someone says a bad word in another language, I don't just want to know that it's bad, but to actually feel its level of vulgarity that it carries with it. Thank you for the video as always. What your doing is awesome.

That's a great example. Yes curse words actually activate a different part of the brain than normal words - same part of brain in monkeys when they alert others to the presence of snakes and other predators. But if you're not "In" the language yet - it's just a goofy set of sounds. So I suppose a good measure of your emotional fluency in a language isn't just how hard you laugh at the jokes, but also how much you cringe at the curses. Great insight Shankara!
