Thank you all for the feedback! Just wanted to clarify to those who are concerned that I did not address certain parameters which would definitely be addressed in a real world application.... This is a VERY rudimentary overview of how the floor plan process works. I eliminated A LOT of parameters including most aspects of a usual program. I believed that adding information about sunlight, circulation, acoustics, privacy, site maps, etc. would be too advanced for this basic of a video. Of course this video does not cover the full extent of developing a floor plan, but I think that’s implied.

You could "stop" the hallway to the bedroom 1 before, having more space into the bedroom and put the door in the other side. That end of the halway is just an empty and unusable space I did it a lot in college, and the teachers have told me that. I hope you understand, my english is not that good xD

I would definitely use the end part of the hallway as a closet for the bedroom.... It makes a long dark hallway. Shorten the hallway and turning it into a useful space seems to be the obvious way to go.
@charlottebackler
@charlottebackler 3 жыл бұрын
See i thought it wouldn’t have made sense in a safety point of view, if a fire starts in the kitchen, it will spread and everyone down that hallway will not be able to get out unless they jump out of a window. I was thinking maybe introduce another door at the end of that hallway or by making a hallway that goes between bedroom 1 and the master bedroom. That way they have a safer exit than all the way on the other side of the house

Thank you for doing this. As a builder, a square or rectangle shape w/o a lot of pop-outs is very cost-efficient. I like to locate kitchens in proximity to attached garages (so you don't have to drag groceries through the house). Hallways are expensive, wasted space (minimize where you can - unless cost is no object). I like to locate laundry rooms near (not in) the garage - away from any living space (noisy). A good plan (for me) is to enter the house through the garage, go through the laundry room, then into the back of the kitchen. Of course, there is a formal front entry and a rear entry off the kitchen/breakfast nook.

I do want to weigh in on the hallway part of your comment. Someone tried to sell me the same idea a long time ago and so I built a house without hallways and it was terrible. I’m living in a house now without hallways and it’s terrible always have a purpose and it’s to separate spaces and to give bedroom areas privacy. It’s well worth the cost.

I stumbled upon your video and it brought back great memories of studying to become an interior designer. I ended up staying in the industry for a short time before going into something else, but I have fond memories of that time. It is interesting how each person would interpret the same needs and floorplan completely differently. For instance, I would have eliminated the wasted space created by the dead end hallway near the bedrooms and used it to create a closet for the adjacent bedroom, or extended the bathroom space instead. Thank you for the great explanation, it makes me realize how little time my professors spent teaching us the mechanics of designing a floorplan from scratch. We had the same tools, just don't remember seeing the process come to life the way you did here.

I just wanted to say how much i enjoyed this video! As someone who has done schooling for interior decorating, Ive always wanted to delve a little more into the design part (house layouts, traffic, etc) and this was a great video to get me started! Thanks!

You’ve communicated and illustrated the process of preparing and executing the floor plan very well. As an interior architect myself- not currently officially practicing- I was curious to watch your video that had popped up in my home page suggestions and glad that I did. It was refreshing to watch a very different approach as you explore ideas and possibilities to plan with that I imagine I can incorporate with my own process. Which differs with the initial stage focused on the concept: assessing the site, how the client wants to experience their spaces, their budget and their priorities of space usage to align with their life choices visualising from the perspective view to form the program for the project. The translation into the overview floor plan follows that. Adapting some of your technique will be a great way to challenge my approach; changing the context to play with will be fun. Thank you. I’d love to see how you design for more complex or unique project briefs; a difficult site, tight specifications, restrictions etc for residential, retail or hospitality. Hopefully that is a possibility that interests you!

I'm still in middle school but I love learning about interior design and floor plans. Me and and my friend design houses first on paper then online, we both work together to create every house. I am definitely sharing this video with her, thank you so much for all the tips I will definitely be coming back to this pretty often.

Hello! Just want to say that you really have an awesome gift for breaking this field down. I just finished with my Master's studies in this field and I have no doubt had some instructors that have made this process feel and seem really daunting...and not to take away from the level of importance it is to take in all building factors...but you definitely made it simple and attainable. I will definitely be checking out your videos and following you as I'm building my skills after online school and stepping into the work field. Thank you!!!!!

I have always drawn floor plans of homes ever since I could hold a pencil. Your approach is the easiest way to rearrange the rooms as I get new floor plan ideas. Thanks

Mimi Estelle Hello, all my life ive always just wanted a job where I make floor plans basically from scratch and the add furniture. Is this what a interior designer does? and if not is there even a job that does just do that?
