In its most simplest form - retributive justice assumes if I owed a lender $1M then I should pay $1M - that is the debt, those who argue it’s obsolete effectively argue that paying back the debt is just a small - and typically not the most important - part of the process rather it includes an holistic rehabilitation of the debtor, which is fine but the lender is still out of pocket. Justice must meet the demand of the debt, if not then only the lender should be able to determine the level of mercy

as I said, check the cody channel. 4 deaths in the last couple of weeks at 1 prison. That is not justice, and I state again that we are a family whose lives were ruined by a criminal, but I would never have wanted him brutalised, rather fully rehabilitated. Doesn't make money though does it, and money is what it boils down to, as demonstrated by the failure of private companies with regard to how they ran the failing prisons.

Evening dress when debating? Plain wrong. Some of these debaters haven't got the first idea of the brutalising of some criminals who could be rehabilitated but come out being greater criminals than they went in, or commit suicide/become a drug addict. Oh and we were a family who suffered like this, and punishment of course is required, but locking up prisoners up for 23 hours just isn't right, neither is violence or withholding of medical care which is common place. Watch the cody channel and you'll see what injustices and deaths happen on a weekly basis. A moral society wouldn't do this to criminals. Believe me, we as a family would want justice, but not the brutalising of that person. , it would never right the terrible wrong that was done, only exacerbate the situation and make us into brutes too.

Was her argument literally, retributive punishment exists and is 'entrenched in our legal system' that makes them not obsolete? Weak ... or did I miss something?

Human nature didn't change. So, there's no reason to talk about obsolense of something deeply rooted in that same nature.
