My bank card was expiring soon and a new card was on its way to myself automatically. A retailor had already been given my new 16 digit card number before I even had my new card delivered. Upon asking the bank they eventually admitted and said the 'system' automatically updates any old card numbers with the new one to any retailor that shows an interest. This shocked myself that you actually have no control over your own bank account.

They even used to reopen accounts that you closed so they could pay businesses that had set up a recurring card payment agreement. I think the law made that illegal now. What was worse is that some banks won't send out statements if your balance was below a certain amount. So some people had started building up debt and charges, also damaging their credit history, with no knowledge that this was happening. Direct debits are much better for recurring payments, as you have a lot more rights. Which is why businesses try to get you to use cards instead.

Not even changing the number helps, due to subscription process credit card companies provide their merchants, where if the merchant has a registered permission to charge the company. The CC provider will tell the merchant of the card number changes. I found this out when I was still charged after deliberately changing my card number as a safety because I had the same number for years. I felt that was a breech of privacy.

Its same with Direct Debits, you tell them to stop, they don't and will take money like 3 Mobile did to me, took 3 months of payments despite not having any internet from them or an active sim. They made it difficult claiming that I needed to give them the sim number and the mobile internet device identifier despite it being returned as it was not working. They took the money.

I had this problem with insurance companies even though I had instructed them not to enroll me in auto renewal (I prefer to shop around for the best deal). They have then tried to auto renew. Many insurance companies will automatically opt you into auto renewal with out telling you, personality I believe auto enrolment in to auto renewal should not be allowed.

Some great points Daniel. You’ve covered most of the reasons why I dislike ongoing card charges over a traditional direct debit which is protected and can be cancelled by the consumer at anytime. I like the fact some modern banks allow you to create “virtual cards” for this specific purpose, you can just kill the card at anytime with no inconvenience to your ability to spend. Sadly keeping a smaller credit limit on any decent credit card won’t limit your spending. Hence the over limit fees - another sting/penalty possible. When you add that to unarranged overdraft costs, the consumer can’t do too much to prevent companies charging them if they’ve previously shared the authority.

There ought to be a right for clients to recall bank payments. Money moves from one bank to another, but somewhere along the chain, the last bank has a duty to know its customers; they shouldn't be allowing deductions from an account that is unproven or unstable. So they money is there to be recalled.

I did the same to a company about 15 years ago and they where shocked i drove 200 miles to get £150 back. They gave me a cheque there and then as they possibly realised i would be on them forever. Wether it is legal to do this i don't know, but as long as it works and i don't need to involve the courts i am happy.

Not sure about the legality of this, but, driving to an office and talking to a member of staff can't be illegal in itself. Beyond that point, though, I would get legal advice on whether you could stay on site when asked to leave. It could be deemed to be harassment (if you do more than just sit in your car in the car park after the initial visit), or trespass, which is, of course, only a civil offence.

I have had this problem so many times. So I think this is a much needed video. For example although I never, I agreed to continue with a antiviral that was purchased for a laptop for 1 year. A couple of weeks ago, my bank statement showed a recent yearly subscription which I did not ask for nor expected them to take when their emails and messages were sending warnings that my device would be free to attack if I didn't subscribe for on going purchase...and so went about it anyway, this week! I had to order a new card anyway but it's a hassle when you have an ongoing problem with a non curable illness, and so am actually already worried about benefits being slashed etc. So thank you for covering this topic.

So could not assure me further payments wouldn't be taken in the future. I asked what would happen if I lost my card and a new 1 was issued which has a different number/security code. I got finance for a car. I paid off the loan, received a thank you for your business letter and thought that was that. A few months later i noticed a payment of $1 to the finance company. After a bit of searching i found that they’d taken a dollar every month since the account was paid. Turns out that the computer doesn’t automatically close your account when the debt is paid and it can’t accept $0, so it hits you for $1. After a chat i got an explanation, apology, and a refund. Makes me wonder how often things like this happen and how much money these companies get away with. I bought a virus checker and the following year the subscription was renewed even though i left the auto update box blank. I rang them up and cancelled and they still billed me the following year!

One aspect of all this completely glossed over here is your credit rating. You need to be slightly careful when "unilaterally" cancelling payments without agreement from the payee. It can negatively effect your credit rating, which can effect things from mortgages to mobile phones to even - conceivably - employment prospects. If they decide to pass their "debt" to a collections company then it can trash your credit rating really quickly. They won't be interested in any explanations or excuses - they'll just trash you if you don't pay them.

Continuous Payment Authority is down to cardholder to cancel. Even if a card has expired or has been replaced due to lost/stolen the card issuer will forward the new card number to the company requesting payment. You would be complaining if your annual travel or car insurance was billed to a card that had been cancelled, expired or replaced and your claim was rejected because payment hadn't been made. If you don't want your card billed, email or write to the company and send by recorded delivery. Keep the proof and ask your bank not to accept anymore transactions from that business.

Imagine our surprise, when we got a small bill, so we called again. It turns out, they didn't cancel it until nearly a week later. My experience is with home insurance. I got an email and the header said the insurance was due for renewal. I then got a message saying payment failed. Well it would because I didn't renew it. I did what I always do and looked at the comparison site, found a better deal and took out a policy with them. I then get another email saying payment failed a second time. I called them and said I don't want the policy, the card had expired and stop harassing me. I was told I would have to pay a £20 admin fee and £10 for the few days I was insured, because the policy had renewed automatically! I said NO, I was not paying a fee, I don't want it. They said they would cancel the policy and that can impact my ability to get further insurance. I am effectively black listed! Apparently they all do this now and sure enough I checked the small print on my new policy and I have to create an online account, log into that account and tick a box to decline the automatic renewal. If I park my car in a car park with inadequate signage and then get a ticket I can appeal that ticket, something I have done. The same doesn't seem to apply online, there used to be box to check a box to agree to automate renewal. Not any more there is a mention in small print that is so easily missed.

It's really not a big problem as long as you do it a couple of weeks before it's due.

The ongoing payments thing can be solved by a virtual card on something like Monzo premium. I make virtual cards and then cancel them to stop more payments being taken from them.

I had a partner who while we were together was a second user of one of my cards. When we separated I didn't think much of it since it was due to expire soon. Little did I realise, this card had been registered with a "buy now, pay later" credit company. They had no problem charging my card and my bank were unable/unwilling to help. To prevent this occurring again, my only option it seemed was to cancel the card.

the bank would be unable to help in this situation as there is no dispute right for those charges. Its a pretty common one, best thing is not to have additional card holders. The primary cardhold is always 100% liable for any charges.

In the Queue at Lidl; Elderly man ahead of me pays £62 ish charge on his card for his shopping. He goes to the side and starts checking his receipt . Comes back to cashier and says you have charged me £31 for my ready made £3 (yellow label discount) salad! She quickly and courteously sets up a refund to his card. All happy? except it will take 48 hrs for the cash to return. How is this acceptable being minus £31 could dump someone in serious trouble re next D/D or whatever.

As others have said, virtual cards resolve this. I use Revolut (though there are plenty of other options) and create a new virtual card for every company that I use for subscriptions.. then I can just freeze the card and forget about it. I have stopped using direct debits connected to my main current account as I have had three different companies (admittedly over a space of 30 years) suddenly take much more than they should.

We had to do a chargeback because our holiday got cancelled thanks to the pandemic. It was pretty straightforward thanks to Tesco Bank. If I have a Direct Debit and cancel my account with the company, I also cancel the direct debit on my app. In the past I’ve called up Natwest and told them not to allow any withdrawals from ……..

i'd un book mark it most of his advice is only 1/2 right at best and some is very wrong. If you want to protect your self what he fails to mention and is key is read the ts and cs when you put in your card details you are agreeing to them all wether read or unread. 2 If you want to cancel a CPA you must do it in writting or contact your bank. Nothing else works.

This video underlines one of my pet peeves in life: How much is my time worth compared to how much I´ve been ripped off? My wife got overcharged by a supermarket chain to the tune of about 28€. After multiple calls, long emails, "escalating" the issue to a consummer rights organization the supermarket finally conceded and credited her account with the sum. My wife charges 180€ an hour in her private consultancy. This means that she actually "cost herself" about 900€ to recover 28€ in terms of time she spent on the issue. Granted, it was all in her free time so technically she didn´t "lose" money, but isn´t her free time worth something too?

I pay with a credit card, then if money is taken without my permission, I ask the card to refund it. I use a Tesco Credit Card and they have been very good, as for GoPro, I am a fan of their cameras and although it can be frustrating trying to contact them, they were fair with me. The point about the expiry date is interesting, I have always been informed by companies/services when a card will be out of date before a payment was due, I had no idea they could still take a payment. Amazon are the worst for trapping people into their Prime service, they caught me once, now I read the small print to make sure I order without Prime, although it is worth having Prime in December for the free deliveries and Christmas TV, leaving prime after Christmas is pretty straight forward.

I instructed my bank to cancel a DD. It was for a subscription to a service I no longer used. They flatly refused. My problem was my emails, advising the service provider I had no further wish to use the service, were not being delivered. My ISP found nothing wrong with my email system so I elected to cancel the DD, but the bank said I was not allowed to even though it was my own personal account.

I had similar problems with an insurance company a 8+ years ago. I paid for 1 year policy upfront and told them that I would not be renewing. One year later they take a higher amount as somehow my policy was more expensive. It took me 6months of emails and phone calls to the insurance company and finally forwarding my emails to and from the insurance ombudsman, I suddenly got my money back with an offer to get my next insurance policy with a 20% discount. I never did take them up on the discount but always check my emails so I never use that company again

Insurance companies often do increase the cost quite a bit once they have you as they rely on people not thinking it’s worth the trouble to move for the extra cost. House insurance also seem to charge some sort of handling charge. I forget what they call it.

I had this a few years ago with a storage unit. The only way I could get them to stop was to call my bank and report my card possibly stolen and request a new one with a new number. I had the old number flagged as stolen and then got a pre-paid visa and gave that to the storage unit to use. It sucked having to manually load money on it every month. I was in the unit for about 6 months and when I was emptying it out I went into the office to personally confirm it was over. Sure enough the next month I get a call from them saying that payment was refused due to lack of funds. I pointed out that I had cancelled the unit and they said they had no record of it. I went down there and showed them their own printed copy proving I had left. The next month they did the same thing but this time the threatened to seize the unit. I let them and the very next month they sent me a "We are so sorry to see you go. If you come back we'll give you 6 months free storage" plea email.
