Greetings from Indonesia. I am a Minahassan Manadonese, just south from the Indonesian-Philippines border. Here in Minahassa we have a similar ensemble too which we call kolintang. We used to have very similar kolintang set in metal instruments just like in this video, but the Dutch colonial government eradicated our practice of metal kolintang and replaced it with wooden xylophone, played similarly. Today we combine elements from the old kolintang like the Gong (just like the ones hanging in the back in this video) which we call "Momongan" with wooden xylophone kolintang in front, replacing the smaller gong in racks (just like in this video or in other Indonesian ethnic music known as "gamelan"). But today our neighboring tribe, the Sangirese, whom lives closer to the Philippines border than us (north of Manado), still have the original kolintang ensemble very similar with Mindanao kulintang. I will post the link of Sangirese kolintang in the reply section.

its an awesome.... i really appreciate it proud to be a Filipino Muslim....the rhythm tells something that makes us curious and continuously listen on the rhythm..very unique.... but i think it will be more good and nice if the will mix human voice...like for example most of the maranao and maguindanao sing using a guitar only...or a voice only...like DARANGEN... OR KAPAGONOR... MAY ALLAH BLESS US ALL AND LEAD US TO THE RIGHT PATH...

Proud Maranao, first kingdom in the Philippine was in Maranao area "the Kingdom of BUMBARAN.1250's before the Maguindanaon sultanates and Tondo Kingdom.

The oldest record of a Philippine kingdom is of the Kingdom of Tondo in the Laguna copperplate, which is a record from 900 AD. The text suggests that Tondo is much older than that. Based on the fact that Banaue rice terraces is at least 3000 years old as well as records from countries around the Philippines, it's safe to say there were kingdoms in the Philippines since BC. But that's just an educated guess. Please don't spread misinformation. "Bumbaran" was not the first kingdom in the Philippines. Doesn't mean it isn't special or valuable. It doesn't have to be the first to be great. That is, if it really existed. Oral tradition is way more reliable than most people think, but it still isn't perfect.

The song I played is actually considered Mestizo Maranao Maguindanaon style. I lived in Mindanao State University campus in Marawi City for 10 years before I came to America. "Tademan kanu kinadtatagapeda sa manga napamandu ku siya sa America sa ukita kagkulintang sa engeda Bangsamoro sa Mindanao."

Kulintang Bangsamoro dari Filipina adalah rumpun budaya Melayu Filipina. Tahukah anda ? Kulintang yang terdiri dari kendang dan gong ini juga budaya Melayu Brunei dan Sabah serta Serawak di Malaysia. Kata kulintang berasal dari kata bahasa Melayu dialek Brunei dan Sulu ( Tausug ) dari Filipina yang artinya gulungan tangan.

Juga dilengkapi dgn deretan gong di atasnya. Kolintang Bangsamoro dari Filipina ini juga sama dgn kolintang dari Minahasa di Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia, dan Brunei. Kolintang di Brunei disebut Gulintangan.

Just browsing and I came across this. Its like Dave Brubeck meets a drum circle. Each player is using a different timing, yet somehow they make it work.

they don't use different timing, they each use different rhythmic pattern. It works because they have the same time and accent that underlies in each rhythm.
