Why no mention of Ridgway and Dahmer who Ressler and Douglas actually encountered and who could fit the timeline? Douglas himself mentions Ridgway as the case that almost cost him hos life.

Bill Tench is the best character in season 2. He's not just some random side character for Holden but instead, the show developed his character arc and he's absolutely tortured by both his family life and his job.
@AvonBarksdale604

While Tench telling Brian a story about him fishing during his childhood, Brian asks Tench "Did the fish die" . This is the only dialogue that he spoke in the entire season. So I guess he loves something or someone dying or he might fantasized about that, I reckon that could have made him to suggest the killer to crucified the victim.
@ckotcher1

I noticed that too, but he suggested crucifying the dead baby to “bring it back to life”…It’s a fictional show but they took that story from a case where that actually happened.

I think the panic being "cured" so quickly is because it's how people in that time setting got through it like how Tench said "man up" clearly he doesnt really consider the anxiety a real thing and so Holden just takes the valium and well "goes on with it"

i think we got manson because everyone wanted to see him. that's how it was presented in the show too. He doesn't fit what they're doing. he's never killed anyone. He didn't order the killing for the love of killing or a compulsion. he had an agenda. he doesn't fit the serial killer profile. They wanted to talk to him because he was famous. We wanted to see him because he's famous... i hope that's all we get of him

I thought how they implemented the story line with Bryan was fantastic. It illustrates the big dilemma that's still being discussed today. Is it nature or is it nurture? Or is it a little bit of both? It's very cool and definitely the premise of the whole show. The mind behind the murder.

The acute panic disorder of Holden is a real thing that happened to Douglas (the author of Mindhunter) in real life, and it became an issue to focus on one thing and not all of them at once in the work. It didn’t become worse though, over time, it went better as it did in the series.

if they go into the 90's they might interview Dahmer. He was also one of the serial killers that John Douglas interviewed. They might even mention him in the mid to late eighties since thats when he was getting a lot of recognition. I think they only include they killers that the BSU actually interviewed and caught

I didn't enjoy season 2 as much as 1 for sure, it was good but just not as good as the first season imo. I powered through season 1 in 2 sittings I think but I struggled with finishing season 2. The show shines when they're interviewing killers and there really wasn't a lot of that in the second half of season 2. You mentioned too that the whole panic attack thing just went nowhere. There were also a couple of other story beats that just went nowhere in the end too. I think the bits I enjoyed most was getting too see the BTK evolving every episode. Not sure how much that says about the show. The rest just wasn't up to par imo.

I couldn't agree more; I thought I was the only one who enjoyed Season 1 more. As much as it was great to see Bill front and centre, as you say the interviews and the internal dynamic of the BSU (especially with Wendy Carr) was sidelined for the Atlanta story. That was strong and compelling, but it wasn't as essentially interesting as seeing the Unit grow and develop new procedures and initiatives based on a variety of killers. I also wanted far more BTK this season, and it felt like he also was dropped, after being built up so insidiously and creepily in the first season.

i love your black mirror reivew and breakdowns so i'm excited for this one! I enjoyed season 2 more than the first and i'm slightly concerned i might become obsessed lmao. As to where the show is going next, we do still have other killers to meet and interview, there's Wendy Carr being criminally underused in this season and I hope she will be able to grow and do more in the profession that she excel in! I'm wondering how they're going to tie up (lmao no pun intended) the BTK storyline because as i've read he won't be caught until a very long time (like 2005 or something??) so i'm curious how it will continue to play out in the future seasons (yes PLURAL)

also, Holden is based in part on John E. Douglas, who helped profile Ridgeway as part of the Green River Task Force.. I don't think Douglas interviewed Bundy as part of the case, others did, but it wouldn't be a narrative stretch to have Holden do so as part of the series... so it fits.. Ridgeway really started ramping up between '82-'84... so it's just fitting... he's another who lived a "normal" double life..
@Sgtspork
@Sgtspork 4 жыл бұрын
fun fact. Douglas was part of the West Memphis 3 case as a profiler.. but much later in 2005-6.. and came up with a profile of a lone adult who knew the kids and it being an unplanned act of rage (and not so called satanism)

I was unhappy with Holden being relegated to a side character almost, but it does seem like his panic disorder and the interaction of the ousted FBI storyline could very well be still in play for later on. I think that the serial killer portrayals have been on point, but maybe the choice to cram as many into the season other important aspects were sacrificed...?
@GigglingKat
@GigglingKat 4 жыл бұрын
One of the underlying themes of the killers that I saw was power manipulation- which is one of the only connections Manson and Tetch’s son had. Even Gunn played into it, how people get into positions of power over others. How it isn’t physical - the biggest or strongest- in fact playing the weakest often won out this season.

I really wish they took Wendy's sexuality a bit different, since she is a academic psychological genius of the show. I would have liked her to be portrayed as hard to please, very dominant, and aware of all psychological aspects in her personal life. Instead, its like she had to be explained some things from this bartender, told to be more assertive and say what she wants, and things like that; wasn't a big fan of 'I have all this academic prowess, but don't really incorporate it into my own life really well' type-thing.

I think they will introduce a fictional version of Thomas Harris to the show, and that character will create a book or a movie that turns the celeb spotlight on the profilers and the whole serial killer and profiler craze will begin. I think this show will end with the publishing of the book and that the two men who started it all will go their separate ways but the younger will become the profiler celeb that John Douglas became somewhat (i love the jab at him in season 5 of The Wire).

Mindhunter has been saved by the Tench family storyline. It is way more interesting and challenging than a poorly drawn, miscast young 'lead' whose alleged encyclopedic knowledge covers 1950's Harvey Glatman but doesn't extend to 1970's Dean Corll. It's just one of the great flaws of Mindhunter, doing nothing to expel the idea that at its heart, the major contribution is the mythologizing of serial murderers.

Season 3 will be one hell of a ride. The 80s brought so much to the forefront at the same time overlooking alot. Not connecting the dots, not paying attention to social cues, political/economic stress. Drug and Gang violence, movies and media and the effects on the youth. Lashing out, confused, forgotten, individuals pushed out of the way. Season 3 will make people revisit cases and raise many questions. "Why did you do it?" "I hate mondays". You know I think Nancy is pretty terrible to Brian, that she wanted a normal alltistic son and has a child she has no idea how to deal with it and in the end she goes out of her way to cover it up and move away to 'fix' the problem and it won't. Brian needs someone who isn't going to force him to be "normal" when he's got his own needs and wants. She strikes me as really ableist.

well, jumping to Autism is a bit presumptuous on your part. many of the traits the boy exhibits encompass a wide variety of different things.. just because some are stereotypically similar, they are not at all unique to the Autism Spectrum by far... ptsd, psychopathy, etc.. also, you are judging her with very modern eyes and knowledge.. this was '81-'82, not much was commonly known about such disorders, autism/ptsd/etc.. especially even on an institutional front lines level.. Autism didn't even become a spectrum until '94.. and a whole lot of advancement in public mental health and knowledge has happened since her time in the story... also info moved way slower, no 24 hour news cycle, no internet, maybe 8-10 channels on T.V. at best. (only 3 major networks producing content really).. so you are right, to a degree, regardless of what's wrong with her son, she's in denial.. and regardless, it still happens today even with ALL the progress made.. but it's also easy to judge someone else offhandedly, especially out of their shoes and context.. it's a lot to process and there was also a child murder.. give the fictional woman a moment to process.. heh. there also weren't support systems, groups, hell, just knowledge out there.. a whole host of stuff we enjoy today wasn't available then, I know. I'm also on the spectrum. so try to keep it in perspective a bit is all I'm saying.

Maybe as someone who is undergoing testing for this i read in to it but i call bull shit on not getting to judge by modern standards. You dont get a pass for fucking up that bad because it was the 80s. My parents managed to not completely destroy me and given all the hints thr author is dropping i fo call autism. A more extreme case to be sure but child hood abuse (from before he was adopted they imply) can make bad symptoms worse.

@@Sephirajo, I agree 100%. The first season I just thought autism on some degree. My son was born 1981 and although wasn't autistic he did eventually show signs of dyslexia, which in itself (especially back then) wasn't all that "accepted" as a true problem. We were told things like " he just doesn't pay attention ","maybe he's ADD" it's horrible when "professionals" tell you your child will "never learn normally" luckily he's dealt with it just fine and I hope you did too. Nancy just wants a perfect little child and only cares about what she wants or they would have noticed his behavior long ago.

Maybe the whole point is that human behavior can never just be quantified into a manual. The reason these crimes go on and on is due to the essential nature of a human being. I think it is good to understand why these crimes happen, but to accurately predict all these things would be impossible. Good show though! Season 1 is brilliant and Season 2 is okay IMO. Too bad we will never see another season of it....................And if you think about how many "serial" killers there have been from the 1970's to today, that sobering thought should be enough to tell you that predicting crimes is extremely difficult. We don't live in the world of Minority Report; even that society had major issues with how crimes were predicted.

What about next year they focus on Henry Lee Lucas and all of his (false confessions). Him and Ottis Toole were two ugly m’fers! And they could show how Toole was highly suspected of killing Adam Walsh.

The Atlanta child And affect on my community in Corpus Christi Texas projects. I would listen to my grandmother and her friends talk about everything that came on TV about that case. I was always up in ground people conversation or at least with me. To this day I still don’t think they got the right person. I do believe Wayne Williams we have killed us three grown men I don’t think he killed her children.

I'm hoping they do Bundy. Season 3 could be more about how your next door neighbor could be a serial killer and be living a regular life with a family, etc. (just as Kemper pointed out, the knowledge the guys from the BSM have on serial killers is based on the ones that got caught) and that would also match up with Brian and what's going on with him. I don't know, but I'd really be glad if they tackled that.

Its BTK, it showing us the guy we're checking in on, has actually already killed people in the past. And BTK actually wore the mask and took pics himself.

@@JohnDee633 It looked like whoever is wearing the mask (I assumed it was the nut job "BTK") is trying to kill himself. I left Kansas in 1984 to join the navy and that BTK stuff just freaked people out of course (luckily did not live in WIchita area). He got caught 3 years before I retired from the military. I never killed one soul in twenty years and that creep took how many lives? One that won't ever be covered by Mindhunter, the Clutter family killings in Holcomb, Ks 1959, not "serial killers" (from the book turned movie "In Cold Blood") just people out for money, which turns out the Holcomb's money was all tied up in farm equipment! Grandparents lived 2-3 hours from Holcomb, out there where "nothing ever happens", my wife grew up in Brooklyn 70's/80's so really remembers all the Son of Sam crap. Hopefully the whole BSU thing really helps, it's still a crazy world.

Columbine probably wouldn't be a case they profile because they know who the killers are, and they are deceased. They either profile an unknown subject, or they interview convicted killers. Neither apply to Columbine.

Interesting synopsis, but the guy's nonverbal behavior was annoying. Also, they explore a lot of semi-biographical/historical info as if they're merely juicy plot points in a fictional show, which I find cringy.

I thought Nancy was an irritating, nagging wife. Bill's "inability" to see how bad he was neglecting the family makes him look both dumb and a jerk. Brian's story seems unbelievable. They make him out to be almost a mute. He's only spoken twice, I think. This season's serial killers were forgettable. And they really didn't seem to move the story; just thrown in. The timeline in Atlanta seemed weird. Never knowing how much time had passed in between killings. I'm not sure how long they spent in Atlanta, 1 week or 6 months. Holden never had another panic attack, so what was the point of adding them in? Is he born to be this perfect serial killer "reader" or what? Wendy was pretty much put on the sideline of the unit and they threw in her dating just to spice up the story. And today it's been announced that season 3 is more than 2 years away because Fincher is working on the Gone Girl sequel. I'm not going to wait. Fuck Mindhunter. It 《was》 good. Not worth it now.
