Really appreciate the self-assessment of your work. I don't think many artists are capable of stepping back and be perfectly honest with their own work. That's where, I think, experience comes into play and dispossessing from the emotional connection we often have with our work. It's a perspective I learned, and I'm sure you can relate, in the corporate field, where you simply cannot be attached to your work. It's been a challenge working with young students in isolating the parts of their work that need improvement... many don't want to hear it, they only want "awesome!" I love the way you were able to re-approach this, innovate, and really make things work. "Value is king." Words of wild wisdom! Great video, my friend! Thank you!

Thanks. And great point, Mark. So much emotion and personal identity is tied up with our art. I think the corporate arena, as you suggested, beats a lot of that out of us as artists if we hope to survive and make it a career. Its useful to take that experience and turn ourselves from an artist into a client to give ourselves some direction. It seems obvious but emotional attachment to a piece of art is a good way to stand still or in other words keep from moving forward. Thanks as always for stopping by my friend!

I recently bought some quash but haven’t tried it yet, but after watching your video I do appreciate that it can add so much to watercolour. I need to stop listening to the purists many of whom are critical of combining quash in their art. Additionally, the weather is finally improving here along the north shore of Lake Erie where I live and I’m looking forward to trying our my Plien Air kit I built over the winter.

Oh, Steve, I love allllll your paintings so much and this one is just one of the most beautiful ones I've seen! I love it very much! Thank you for being so kind in posting all your tutorials and reviews. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy watching them all. You are such a kind and gentle soul :) (and super talented). Please stay safe with your family down there. I enjoyed seeing your little video the other week that you posted while being in isolation with your family. Your grandkids look like nice young people :) and your place looks gorgeous!! What a lovely setting you have there (nice porch too, I'm envious :) All the best for you and your family

its good to hear how you feel about your own work. I am particularly hard on my work no matter what it is as I do a various of crafts . I really want to perfect my watercolor now . I can see how easy it is to over work the subject . I would have kept on going with detail where you stopped , which in turn makes me realize , don't over do it lol . stop and look at it . I am kinda trying that now , to stop in between sessions and wait , which is really hard for a person like me I want to get it done . but i should have patience . I guess we never ever stop learning .

In future it would be nice if you could add at the end of the video a few photos of the work in stages, maybe a photo of the spot that inspired the sketch, a photo of the plein air sketch and a photo after any studio adjustments. It is hard to see the impact of any before/after changes you did in studio when we see them a bit at a time.

First let me say, I've got some pretty bad Schmincke envy now! Now that I got that out of the way, you ended up with a wonderful sketch Steve. Your adjustment to the values solved a lot of your issues. It's soooo tough to do a good plein air sketch if you aren't comfortable where you're sitting at. I just finished painting a waterfall in Utah and it's such a humbling experience, especially when that water is roaring down the rocks. It's so deafening that it almost throws your equilibrium off, you know? Thanks for another wonderful learning experience with this video!!!

Very nice painting, Steve. I love the way you painted the waterfall. What kind of spiral book are you using? My favorite travel palette is the small Sennelier metal tin that you also use. I put some velcro strips on the bottom and can attach it to a piece of heavy wt cardstock (which has velcro strips along the top half). It sticks up out of the back of my journal or spiral book and binder clips hold it together. The clips double as a place to hang a brush tip down. I enjoy watching your plein air videos especially, thanks for sharing your talent.

I love the painting and it helps me to figure out how to do the shadows in my paintings by your example. I have added to my paintings when it's dry but sometimes I get blooms and and my darks don't get dark enough. Then I go and use black but sometimes it doesn't look right? Like the shadows in the rocks. It's dark but yet transparent? I try to get that affect but haven't achieved it as of yet. I don't want it to look blah. You know what I'm talking about? Have hard edges not soft ones things like that also. Anyway fabulous finish to the painting! Thanks for sharing 😊!

I just keep a rag in my other hand to adjust moisture on the fly. I do this frequently. If you get too much water just squeeze the brush bristles with the rag to dry it out. Waterbrushes will always stay a little wetter than a normal brush but you can still quickly change the amount of water in the brush quite a lot.

I’m on a very tight budget but will spend for quality and good recommendations. I’ve been researching what journals are out there and there are many more pros and cons to consider compared to the quality and reliability of Arches. Now if Arches just made journals...or do they?

@mindofwatercolor

There are a lot of 6 color choices I could live with. Probably a warm and cool red, warm and cool yellow and a warm and cool blue (lots of options there). Might look like this: Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue or Phthalo Blue, Indian Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Quinacridone Red, Rose, or Magenta, Scarlet Pyrol. From those you could mix almost anything.
