I was always against CrossFit and I liked classic weight training with shortened rest times to incorporate cardio. But I just took up a trial of CrossFit 3 weeks ago because an opportunity came to me. & I must say so far I’m loving it and nearly everyone in the class has an incredible body. Muscly but also athletic. I’m gonna stick it through for a little bit and see what it does for me

CrossFit worked for me because it introduced me to compound lifting in a way that made me want to learn more about it; it got me into fitness because of its variety; it taught me many different modalities; it taught me the benefits of warming up and how to make that effective: and it led me to MindPump. Now I train XFit once or twice a week to push myself, to get some HIIT that I find difficult to do on my own, and then I lift 2-4 other days a week. Never been injured; never worked harder; never learned so much; never had more fun getting and staying fit. Met some great people on the way. And I know if I had to, I would choose lifting over XFit but I would miss it.

I love the point of view, "Okay but WHY is it bad??" I come across that a ton in financial advising. Is insurance good? Bad? Are mutual funds or etfs better? Are bonds bad? Here's the deal, each of those things have a time and place, they have strengths and weaknesses, and can be used well for the right purpose. LOVE this analysis of pros and cons instead of labelling something as all "good" or "bad."

I think the reason crossfitters get upset is because Crossfit is most people's first exposure to fitness in many cases, it feels a bit more personal when the one thing that may have singlehandedly changed their life, is criticized. And Crossfit HQ created a culture of attacking anyone that criticized the fitness modality, and that must have just had a domino effect across the whole community in defending the brand. I mean, back in 2009, Greg Glassman fired Robb Wolf of all people, for disagreeing with the way they approached nutrition.

I’ve done CrossFit for almost 7 years and it’s exposed me to a lot of things I didn’t do prior (mostly endurance and body building). I think the definition of CrossFit you all are looking for, and what makes it unique is “CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.” I do love the discussion you had about changing it up from time to time. I’ve just gone through a power lifting strength cycle (squat and deadlift) and I’m seeing some huge gains in my CrossFit performance.

My thought... reason why bumper plates/big compound movements.. did not reach main street peeps before CrossFit is because these 2 sports (Powerlifting and Bodybuilding) are not about going 100 miles a hour with constant elevated heart rate... Peeps are still stuck in that mentality of "cardio and circuits" burns the most fat. Especially my women clients, I have a hard time getting them to rest properly between compound sets so they can preform the next set. Best for average Joe and Susie... is a variation of training methods. I always mix in big compounds with my circuit lovers! It is a great way to measure strength gains and it's definitely motivating for them to see weight being added to the bar!

3:00 - 4:00 was perfectly stated. - from an avid crossfitter. At 5:00 you ask what defines crossfit. CrossFit is Constantly Varied, Functional Movements, performed at High Intensity. So is every exercise crossfit?.. yes. But if something is not functional, we tend to steer clear, but not always. The Constantly varied portion is important. We're not doing back, bi's and tri's on Monday/Wednesday/Fri and Legs and Abs tues/thurs for example.

It very well can be an injury waiting to happen. I like the way they put it, what defines CrossFit really is turning it competitive. Now I know the whole community and brotherhood aspect as well as the intensity. But when you make anything into a competitive thing, it can be high risk of injury. Take any sport to the extreme level, and it becomes high risk of injury, take football for example.

@Yirlani when done properly (just like other types of training), CrossFit is just as safe as any other training methodology. That’s not even my opinion, the data bears that out. Also, CF has ALWAYS touted their charter of “mechanics, consistency, then and ONLY then, intensity” so if you go to a good gym with a good coach, injuries should be few and far in between. Plus it’s incredibly effective when implemented properly.

I think it all makes sense but that you also missed the point.. thinking about the analogy with MMA, would Crossfit represent the fitness MMA? As the most well rounded training program since it combines different training techinques. I don't really train crossfit and do follow your advice to incorporate good things from different methods, but I feel that if the combination that Crossfit promotes is done thinking on the long term and respecting one's limits, maybe it just means using all tools at disposable to improve one's condition! Maybe the problem with the Crossfit modality is the lack of long term thinking or the thought of superiority even though it is actually very basic 🤔.. but not sure about that, maybe it is something else.

CrossFit is fun, but the quality of the programming and training is definitely going to be pretty variable. You'll also probably plateau in some areas and won't get past it unless you put in work yourself outside of CrossFit. One of my buddies has been doing CrossFit for over five years, but my total is higher than his after about 18 months of self-coaching with 5/3/1 as the basic program. We did a Spartan race together earlier this year, and I outperformed him in that too, since I do actual steady state cardio, which CrossFit tends to ignore. Just one data point, but my friend's been doing CrossFit literally every day dor five years. He's also much bigger and taller than me, albeit not very athletic.
@nomad1517
@nomad1517 Жыл бұрын
Cross fit is essentially cross training plus a group of people. That's really it. A: it makes you feel like you're apart of something and when you surround yourself with people who have the same habits as you or habits you want to adopt, you will be much more successful. B: it can get you into a feeling of pride since you have a gym of your own at home or even open up a box. That being said. I think training is to get you prepared for something intense. I think cross fit makes people think they need to be an olympic athlete to be healthy. I don't personally agree with Greg Glassman's philosophy of essentially being an athletic dilettante and thinking that preparing yourself physically using functional movement is going to save you from dealing with a possible emergency like a terrorist attack, not saying staying fit using functional fitness can't give you a running start however. If you don't have special training in something specific, you wont be a master of it, a Navy SEAL isnt a green beret, ranger, sniper, astronaut. It's not possible, and if he is, hes going to be a crappy navy seal in general. America has this bullshit fallacy that they need to be that shredded guy on the poster to be healthy. Remember, before offices where a thing, most people were moving around all the time. Those who didn't were either super old, mentally or physically ill or dead. A lot of people were farmers and were constantly moving. There was no need for weight lifting or anything fancy, that's why strongmen existed and it was mind blowing to see a person in that type of shape, it was a circus act. But back in the 70s and 80s that all changed when Arnold hit the silver screen. Every guy wanted to be ripped like him. But they don't understand, that top tier athletes train. They train for hours a day. They bust ass all the time. But that's their identity. That's why few people become that person because they have a million things on their attention span. A single mother who is a nurse, and works at denny's as a second job, will have a very hard time becoming a world record holder in power lifting, ill tell you that. Whatever you dedicate your time to, is what you will become. Green Beret's or any Elite military unit, same thing: training all the time, 24/7 with some other stuff in between. That being said. For the average joe who is trying to prevent himself from dying of a heart attack, learn about behavior change, go on a good medical based diet, and get some sort of exercise. You don't need do the crossfit games, or even go to a box. Just do some hard style kettlbell sessions at home. Or go for a walk for an hour every day. Unless you are training for something specific, don't sweat it. If you enjoy crossfit, go for it, have fun. Being healthy should always be encouraged. Don't be dogmatic, find what works for you.

Let me help you guys out. Crossfit is constantly varied functional movements performed at a high intensity. Yes it’s that broad. Perhaps that’s why people are bothered by your criticisms. It seems that they are poorly informed and or disingenuous. There are plenty of very good and much important issues with crossfit. An honest person must compare the methodology to the application. Also decide whether or not to critique the methodology or it’s often flawed execution.

The funny thing is that CrossFit IS the MMA of fitness. The top athletes DO all the modalities. That’s literally what CrossFit is by definition. The one thing that has worked the best for 99% of my clients has been some basic strength training followed up with a short/moderate length CrossFit style metcon. If y’all want to get a better grasp on what you’re talking about (as far as CrossFit) I HIGHLY recommend going to the L1 and then maybe sit down with some of the seminar staff. It’s a good learning opportunity. You’d be one of the first outsiders to do this because most are too ignorant and intimidated to actually do it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I dig the idea of cross-fit but cannot start that now as I am 50 yrs old. I think you have to do something. Gotta build your heart muscle so cardio and cross-fit both check that box. Gotta work on compound exercises as well. Cannot mail it in. The problem with most of these videos is that you are working a full time job. Maybe you have a wife and kids. Now you must figure out a time to train while working full time and being part of a family you are blessed with. Some years (or decades in my experience) you have to make choices. You need to take care of both your family and yourself. Not sure how this ends this debate but I think this debate is kind of a first world problem.

I am speaking for myself when I say. I don't give two shits about who is better than who. I go to the gym because I'm a bit embarrassed about my legs and forearms. and I just mostly go to the gym so I can look good physic wise. I want to be able to go to the beach and not be embarrassed to take off my shirt without looking like a pencil or a beer hogging flubber butt. I want to look good. I want people to look at me and say "That guy takes care of himself and cares about his body & health" I also don't want to be 70 or 80 years old that can barely get the fuck up off a chair or depend on someone to wipe my ass. I like to be independent when I am older. One thing I learned, you have to keep moving. You have to keep fucking moving...... because if you don't, then when you're 70 or 80 years old, you're gonna get seriously fucked. You have to keep fucking moving........ eat healthy, stop eating fried foods, stop eating butter or anything with oil / grease, stop eating pork and stop eating rare steak. fully cook your steaks. eat lots of veggies at least 3 times a week. eat/drink protein and drink enough water that your pee comes out clear every time you go to the bathroom. Don't sun bath for hours, it ruins your skin, and you will notice it when you're 70 and your skin starts crumbling because you sun bathed for years.

Correct. They made an argument FOR CrossFit but don’t know it because they’ve never sat down with a higher level CrossFit athlete, seminar staff, or took the time to go to an L1. If they did this they would learn a lot

Is bodybuilding a sport? Its more of a posing competition. Where’s the time you use any athletic abilities apart from flexing? You’ll use more athletic movements in crossfit than posing comp like bodybuilding. Crossfit is more or less circuit training. If they say crossift isn’t sustainable then bodybuilding will also wreck your joints. Go ask ronnie coleman? Anything is sustainable when its structured and appropriate loading week in week out.

I'm a huge fan of bodybuilding and almost all the fans acknowledge it's not a sport but we still love it cause it's fun and we love looking aesthetic and swole lol. Also, Ronnie Coleman is a bad example because he injured himself because of powerlifting style training (he was a former powerlifter). He did crazy heavy lifts and never adjusted to his age or injuries. Bodybuilding training is less likely to injure you because you use lighter weights and use a lot of isolation exercises and machines. Not to mention you don't have to do hard athletic movements like an athlete would, so you're less likely to get hurt.

Neither are very functional. You wanna be strong and fast? Go play rugby or do mma or boxing lol. Cross fitters acting tough or fit or talking about functional fitness makes me cringe. You wouldn’t last 5 min in a grappling match

You guys make good points but maybe don't know that crossfit videos are always full of butthutt bodybuilders too. So everyone takes their discipline too defensively.

Crossfitters get upset simply because CrossFit clames to be itself the perfect fitness modality. No other sport or modality states that, but simply they exist to achieve a goal (maximal strenght in powerlifting, aesthetic in bodybuilding, knock the opponent down in combat sports)

I think that your criticizing certain aspects of bodybuilding is taken differently than criticizing crossfit for two reasons. 1. Because you intentionally push the buttons of crossfit people. 2. Because you have been very pro bodybuilding and even have a bodybuilder on your panel. People view inside criticism more kindly than outside.

That's not the issue. When it comes down to specificity, especially sport specific training, programming, technique, and optimal rest time will determine the superiority of an athlete in each individual sport. Crossfit might help to some degree having a WOD somewhere in that programming, but not as crossfit is designed alone and especially not even ebry othe day, it will render them useless in the sport specific movements.

Sooooooooooo you think that crossfit is only training for the sport of crossfit? Before it was a sport it was a thing. It was brought about as functional training involving movements that combine different parts of the body. This is different than say bodybuilding which focuses on isolation as a means to make the whole. If you'll notice, bodybuilders are not very agile, this is what crosfitters do not like. I can tell you guys are haters by the way you speak on it, I have no dog in this fight but either you're not smart or you choose to be oblivious.

the worst thing about crossfit sessions at my gym is the attitude of the trainers. "GET MOVING" "HURRY UP KEEP GOING" "GET UP!! YOU'RE NOT RESTING IN MY GYM!" fuck that i dont need some 20 year old dipshit yelling at me when im trying to focus on form, or i've reached my 80-90% and am happy to stop.

The point on martial arts is super flawed. MMA determined which of the fighting styles is the most effective and it's wrestling or BJJ. More titles have been won by wrestlers than any other discipline. The same is true with fitness, not all approaches are equal; if the goal is fitness their is a superior method

Lmao. No. You cannot compare MMA because it’s so complicated, I compete I would know. You have no such thing as a pure wrestler or striker, you have different styles, match ups, body types. Strikers can beat wrestlers and vice versa but ultimately everyone is a very complex mix of skills at this point, you cannot say wrestlers are dominant. Also currently, of the ufc champions: Ngannou, jiri, Izzy, Valentina, Volk, figgy can all be considered strikers. That’s at least half of the champions lol. I compete

Cute video but you are smarter than this. Your training is pretty sweet for looking good but it’s all show no go. Crossfit is GPP plain and simple. To be pretty damn good at running a 5k while also having a 350lb squat max and being able to do some gymnastics. I’d rather have those skills and general preparedness for the contingencies of life than have 20lbs of extra muscle that leave me out of breath if I’m trying to run after my kid or god forbid defend my family.

Ok dude lol, yall are just doing this for the hype and that's cool. I won't be listening to you the same way though. You can take this from someone that doesn't even exercise. I started watching you because of Callen's episode and your way of talking came across as sophisticated, but the logic you are using to respond to some of the comments people left before is disappointing.
