For the first caller, assuming that you're eating a significant amount of processed carbs, I would entertain the idea of going on a ketogenic diet and limit your carb intake for a period of time. Whenever I go on keto diet for months at a time, my mental clarity and focus improves drastically - I used to suffer horribly from brain fog and fatigue. Your energy levels should also greatly improve. It most likely is the inflammation caused by the foods you are consuming that is triggering the brain fog and fatigue. This is all assuming that some other kind of metabolic issue isn't the culprit. The weight loss you'll experience will also be an added bonus. Wishing you the best brother!

Oh wow, your Scholastic commentary really took me back. I don't know if it was just California or nation wide but I definitely took advantage of that program. Some posters, stickers and bookmarks, but always at least 10 books. A few kids in my classroom would get two or three in a padded envelope, but I was always the one with the box. No matter how poor we ever were, my mom always took care of me in the book department. And couldn't help but chuckle when at 0:11 Adam utters "what!?" concerning Sal's protein bar comments. 😆

I think protein powders and bars have their place. With powders if you struggle to hit your protein target in a day, powders don't create too much load on your digestive system. Protein bars can be treated as a dessert and can provide a bit of mental relief from dieting. It's all about balance.

Just found you guys recently, through Thomas’s channel. Already learned so much from the pod casts I’ve heard in this short time. I started on this heath journey about 14 years ago, when I graduated from high school. After graduating I noticed that I started to gain weight. I’ve played sports all my life, been really active but my activity dramatically went down after high schools and kept eating how I used to. I started to hate that my performance was going down and the short of breath made me conscious of my health. This made me change my eating habits and has kept me in pretty good shape but I recently started to do resistance training at home because I want to get a more defining, toned body and leaner. So I started to cut down on my calories, I am trying to reach my protein goal but I am not loosing percentage body fat and I do notice that my upper right arms look bigger than my left side. What can I do to fix this mistake?

I feel like your caller who was concerned with her shoulders is really similar to me. I switched to body weight exercises and stopped lifting heavy upper body and I look and feel so much better. She might actually need to lower her volume in her upper body. I know it depends on body fat percentage, but as a woman you CAN get too muscular and not feel comfortable in your skin anymore. Some women do build really easily.

great episode. i have started adding more protein to my diet and added trigger sessions to my training as a result of this podcast. to avoid the pitfalls of shakes or bars, I will sometimes use a bar in lieu of typical "carby" snack and don't rely on them. I use unflavored protein powder on a near daily basis which reduces the calories you take with it, and allows you to add it to other foods more easily. i also tend to add the powder to my breakfast to frontload my diet. it seems to be helping. i otherwise use mostly whole foods, including animal protein and try to favor vegetables or "carb" sources that have more protein in them. thanks guys!

I gotta say I tried really hard for about 3 years to eat 100% whole natural foods and I had horrible digestion issues. I ate a lb of beef a day and tried to shove as many veggies as I could into my meals and I struggled with constipation and diarrhea despite trying many things to solve it. What finally worked was not trying so hard to eat 100% Whole Foods. Now for dinner I have a bowl of cereal and a protein shake and I only have spinach with my one beef and rice meal a day and I think it is a lot less hard on my digestive system. If you use the app chronometer you can see all your micronutrients as well and I’m still hitting 100% of my micronutrients. Whole Foods are great and healthy but processed foods and protein shakes have their place too especially in my situation.

I noticed that a lot of the protein bars have a lot saturated fat to add flavor. That seems to defeat the purpose. It’s a huge red flag when the calories far exceed the estimated protein calorie count. (4 calories per gram of protein.) I am guilty of reaching for an unflavored protein shake daily to try to hit my protein number without exceeding my desired calorie count for the day.

I make homemade protein shakes with frozen berries, a banana and Greek yogurt maybe stevia. Cheaper and more whole Protein shakes and powders are referred to as “supplements “ therefore shouldn’t be the main or major source of protein. Processed foods when in excess in ones diet over time can increase peoples risk of chronic illinesses like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and even end stage renal disease. Two questions. The first requires some background. So I eat a vegetarian diet and have for 30 years. I understand this isn’t the “ healthiest” diet and I do believe my health is suffering because of it. I’m 43, hypothyroid, chronically exhausted and really just don’t feel well ever. I really don’t eat a whole lot but I do only eat whole foods with the exception of a severe popsicle and Mr. Freeze addiction. That will be explained in my second question. So - I can only manage about 15 grams of protein per day. Any time I try to eat a meal that contains more than 10-15 grams of protein I’m extremely nauseous within two hours and end up throwing it up about four-six hours later. I weigh 110 lbs. have you ever come across anyone who can’t tolerate protein? Any suggestions as to how I can sneak in more protein? I’m literally missing about 95 Grams per day. Second - I end every day with about 3 jumbo Freezes and 4-6 popsicles. I do this intentionally because I don’t drink water. I don’t like water - I’m never thirsty and I’m always too full to manage both food and fluids. I have to choose between. So is it better to stay chronically dehydrated or to ingest the million grams of glucose that I do in order to force the fluids in? I make a point of trying to finish a 500 ml bottle of water every day but never finish it. It’s like - I’m a small person with a small stomach and can’t fit all these things in. I workout 3 days per week ( used to be 7). Anyone else protein intolerant? Is that a thing?

I know this is not ideal. But I use protein bars or protein powders to not cheat. Basically if my family goes out and has ice cream, I might Have a protein bowl or a bar instead of joining them. It's a head game for me.😅

I like to eat all unprocessed whole food diet. I do use some protein shakes (not much), but I wish I didn't have to. The reason I use them is that timing wise, I need something I can throw down and then be able to work out right afterwards. I can't think of a food that would give me 10 grams of protein that I could easily work out fairly soon after eating it. Any thoughts.

Would like to see Adam run a placebo also with his semaglutide experiment. Have Sal give it to you for like 4 weeks, then switch. Just a thought!
