The Convention on Psychotropic Substances was a 1971 United Nations treaty that placed strong restrictions on the use of psychedelic drugs - not only on personal use, but medical and scientific research as well. Along with restrictions placed by individual nations, it has been very difficult for scientists to study the effects of psychedelics on the brain, despite indications that they might have significant therapeutic potential. But this has gradually been changing, and researchers like Robin Carhart-Harris have begun to perform controlled experiments to see how psychedelics affect the brain, and what positive uses they might have. Robin and I talk about how psychedelics work, how they can help with conditions from addiction to depression, and how they can help people discover things about themselves.
Robin Carhart-Harris received his Ph.D. in psychopharmacology from the University of Bristol. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Research in the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London, and holds an honorary position at the University of Oxford. His research involves functional brain imaging studies with psilocybin (magic mushrooms), LSD, MDMA (ecstasy) and DMT (ayahuasca), plus a clinical trial of psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression.

Besides Carhart Harris there are no better guests to talk about consciousness and its altered states than Thomas Metzinger, David Pearce, Andres Gomez Emilsson, Anil Seth, Evan Thompson. Please consider inviting them because the subject triggers a lot of interest and these people have a lot of intriguing things to say about it.

He’s an eminent mathematician and his theory about consciousness could certainly reveal something crucial (although i don’t see it catching the scientists attention). But search for any podcast interview of Andres Gomez Emilsson and see how that discussion compares to Penrose’s interviews.

Mindscape 82: the best one yet. Sean C. having a 'breakthrough' psychedelic experience would find the horizons to his theoretical physics and cosmological work broadened so much that there wouldn't be enough time to jot down in real-time all the newly gained revelatory deeper understanding -- until perhaps session #2 a month later? :) in my mind, without a doubt, one of the most human things you could ever do is this. most importantly of all, don't forget to come back and report to us about the new perspectives, in a Mindscape episode or in a book!

I experienced this after a bout of trips a few years ago. I found what I was searching for to an extent, but my ego was the casualty. It manifested in a lack of true concern for most things and even myself in thankfully harmless ways. I think an ego under control is much more desirable than no ego, its a strange place to exist. Eventually, about 3 months later I felt it 'come back' but I don't think I've been the same since. I also can't tell if revelations are purely cynicism or accurate realism sometimes. Sean would probably benefit greatly from a 'high dose', as most people do. My point is that ego death is maybe not the most beneficial outcome of that experience.

Alex Cherfan it’s not for people without the spiritual knowledge and training. You aren’t smart enough! You literally did die, and came back into a different parallel universe, and in a different version of you. Hence you’ll be out of it for months to years. Ego death is serious business. I mean even I won’t be doing that again. The terror of full on ego death is beyond normal death. You certainly appreciate your Earth life after.

46:43 Well... I would just say that Sean is not being generous to the surely small sample of "advocates" he's probably referring to. Great answer by Carhart-Harris, BTW, although I think it again goes woosh over Sean's head: the problem is the way he puts it: "the nature of reality", which implies a dualism, whether Sean sees it or not. "The nature of nature" is a bit better. If I am part of nature, and I use psychedelics effectively, then I can get insights into a very important part of nature, the part that stitches together my very real experience. For a naturalist who constantly reminds everyone that they themselves are quantum systems, Sean seems unable to do the same with "reality" or "nature". A physicist's mind, i guess. 1:01:21 I hear you, that sounds reasonable. But they are not mutually exclusive. Decriminalize AND roll out regulated therapeutic use, as well as offer information/education campaigns. But let people do it themselves, experiment by themselves. Don't add making people criminal on top of whatever crisis is leading them to psychedelics. My fear is that a big brother attitude will be taken toward psychedelic use and we end up brainwashing people with the institutions and therapists ideologies... IDK. My two cents. I wish they would have been more talk of brain activity... anyways, keep up the research...

Unfortunately this conservation was held with too much mutual reservations, I guess because of their too different mindsets to grapple problems in general (mathematical rigor vs psychological fuzziness)? From ego-dissolving intrapersonal "Archetypes of the Unconscious" to an quantum-mechanically sound "A-Many-Worlds-Theory" ... there are a hell of a lot of unexplored pitfalls in-between, probably the extreme edges of the subjective "inside" and the objective "outside" universe so to speak. It would have been interesting to tackle this dualism of "inner experience" and "outside reality/realities" in a more open-ended and even controversial manner rather than to establish - after 40 years now - that the "War on Drugs" was probably not good for science and halted some serious progress to this day (as with "War on Terror" or anything for that matter which were just fast political excuses to successfully cut on civil liberties. And once in place - after the fear-mongering - are nearly impossible to regain. One must be very constrained in his/her thinking to rationalize prohibiting substances which are abundant in nature or easily derived from when you take a look at the massive amounts of legal chemicals in our environment actively destroying our eco-systems in a cause and effect manner. .... Or to let terrorism being loosely defined by the state so to murder people all around the world without due process. Seeing a pattern here? Sorry for the rant ..) I mean the concept of the Default-Mode-Network which his whole paper "The entropic brain" is heavily based on was not even touched upon. Or his contra-intuitive finding that classic psychedelic do not generally increase brain-activity but in fact decrease activity in brain regions associated with the DMN and thus allowing for a entropy increase overall. His division of primary consciousness and secondary consciousness in terms of criticality and sub-criticality is only touched upon in a short sentence of "striking the balance" C'mon this is - when not elaborated on - just banality. I mean I could go on and on for missed opportunities to dive deeper in exploring those concepts in helping understanding the brain in systemic and holistic terms, one could even argue in old-fashioned cybernetic terms. So for anyone interested please do yourselves a favour and go read his paper from 2014 "The entropic brain".

Great episode, maybe because it felt too personal, I had experience with many of the drugs mentioned and having this perspective and scientific knowledge to associate with my own experiences are amazing. When I was around 18 I took this anti inflammatory medicine (super dose of the whole pack) and Jesus I had hallucinations, way more than any psychotropic I had in my life, it’s active ingredient is Benzydamine, is it considered a psychotropic drug? Btw the commercial name was Benflogin

it seems common sense to me that if a substance can help you, then it can also harm you. obviously decades have been wasted in understanding how to tease out help from harm. put those to things together and it's clear that now is not the time to do LSD or DMT, etc..... there just isn't enough historical data and analysis yet.

This is a very hard subject. Its hard to talk about because of the 'taboo' and the 'woo woo'. Its hard because our language lacks the correct descriptive words to accurately convey what exactly the psychedelic experience is. Let alone what it could implicate about our nature as humans, and about the nature of existence period. I think this was a great podcast. Im a huge huge fan of both these men and have followed them both for years. Its a tough subject and I applaud Mr. Carroll for having the courage and the constitution to talk about these things with an open mind and with an open heart. Thank you for this episode, would love to see more of the Dr. on Mindscape.

Psychadelics would show Sean how annoyingly dismissive he is about legitimate possibilities for reality that despite our wishes may not ever be testable. Try a heroic dose of anything and come back with any real certainty of anything at all other than the fact that you are fundamentally, humbly, uncertain and need to be open minded about as much as possible as often as possible and then I’ll be impressed. And to be honest I think it’s pretty clear Sean is just insecure about being categorized as “woo woo” for social capital which I have even less respect for

Anything you describe, in the realm of psychedelics, as being something other than visual distortions can still be classified as visual distortions whether you like it or not. They spent over an hour discussing what specifically happens, and you’ve latched onto a single sentence. Just because you may not understand what is going on and it’s “mysterious” to you, doesn’t mean you can pretend whatever you believe is the truth. At that point, you might as well believe anything you want regardless of whether it’s true or helpful. You CAN do that, but it’s just not helpful to anyone, including yourself.
