I didn’t really know what we were getting into with exploring this abandoned mine, but given the remote location and the fact that it is a shaft (which fewer people are willing to venture into), I had some optimism… As it turned out, this optimism was amply rewarded on the bottom level of this mine (which the next video will be devoted to). A handful of spots on the descent down the shaft were a bit sporty - the areas where the track crossed over huge voids and areas where caved material made getting down the shaft a very tight squeeze… And I can assure you that it was a lot of work climbing back out of this mine!
As you saw, the miners did some stoping on the small drifts running off from the shaft on the way down. What’s interesting is that all of these workings seem to connect to each other in one place or another (independent of the shaft) all of the way down to the fantastic bottom level. So, it would seem they were following a pretty substantial ore body down.
According to our records, this mine dates back to the 1870s and was primarily a gold and silver mine, but also had some lead.
It is difficult to imagine this mine being accessible for too much longer as those spaces we squeezed through were getting tight and also it was damp in the upper part of this mine and so the wood spanning those deep pits on the way down is mostly rotten. In other words, I’m glad we documented this mine when we did.
Don’t miss the next video of the bottom level of this mine!

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Less than a minute before you showed the wheelbarrow I was thinking, "Does anyone do this amount of physical labor anymore?" I thought of my Grandfather that worked in Kentucky coal mines starting as a kid. I can't fathom the amount of work that went into this mine. Then you showed the wheelbarrow. Imagination went back in time picturing a worker pushing that along those boards...time after time. This is the heart of what makes your videos so great. Artifacts telling the stories of those before us, that built real wealth.

I agree. We use lamps now days and back then it was carbide lamps and before that candles. They were single and double jacking by candle light. I would not want to have held that drill bit lol. Many times they would only use one candle to save on candles. We use liquid blasting material now. Back then it was dynamite and caps. No danger there lol. These guys were salt of the earth men and worked unbelievably hard for a meager pay

Austin Hills Sr. was a shipbuilder. In 1873 he and his two sons, Austin Herbert & Reuben Wilmarth Hills sailed from New England to California. In 1878 they established a Bay City business selling tea, coffee and dairy products. In 1900 R.W. Hills invented the vacuum-packing process that is still used to this day. The "Red Can Brand" of Hills Bros. Coffee, like the can in your video, was introduced in 1914. In 1926 they moved the business head office to San Francisco. In 1930 they expanded to Chicago and within 11 months became the #1 selling coffee in the region. In 1940 and during WWII their packaging changed from metal to glass. So that coffee can you found dates from between 1914 and 1940.

I have to admit that I copy/pasted the above information. But, I was the author of it. Several weeks before your video I commented on someone else's mine explore video where they had found a Hills Bros. Coffee can. I had put quite a bit of time into researching the information for the original post, and didn't really want to do that research again. So I back tracked and found the comment I had written a few weeks earlier, and clip/pasted it here. --- Is it still plagiarism if I was the original author? :> The one thing I kept thinking about while doing the research was the fact that they left New England in 1873 and by 1878 had a business up and running in California. I doubt they took the Northern route through the Bering Sea, but probably went South down around the tip of South America. I couldn't find any information of which route they took, but either way is an impressive voyage.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 5 жыл бұрын
Haha, nah, definitely not plagiarism then... I just finished reading Two Years Before The Mast by Richard Henry Dana and that gives an excellent account of that trip around South America (and also of early California history). It definitely was a hell of a journey.

Awesome exploration of the Historical mine. It is hard to fathom the work the miners put in to make all those stopes. Almost gives you an uneasy feeling how hollowed out that mountain is which at some point will collapse and only this video will remain for documentation of the hard work the miners did back in the day. Jeeeeeez! Verticality in mines gives me the heebie-jeebies, and this is about the most vertical I've seen without actually being vertical! It almost looks like the shaft was driven inside and along the strike of the vein, which would account for the false floors in the shaft itself...crazy stuff! Usually, inclined shafts would just be sunk perpendicular to the strike and matching the dip of the vein, so shaft development produced pay ore and the length of crosscuts was reduced. The seemingly random stoping and inclined room-and-pillar work reminds me of the mines near Kelly, NM - much of the ore there was not found in neat and tidy veins! At 5:52, that tank is a receiver tank for the mine's air system. It would act as a sort of buffer between the drill and the compressor, so that the compressor would not need to run for every small action that consumed air. That reduces wear and tear on the compressor.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was definitely a workout climbing out of this one! I was intrigued by the location of the shaft as well as it did indeed seem to punch straight into the vein. I definitely had the impression that the veins here were not neat and tidy... Thank you for explaining the details on the tank and weighing in with your usual expertise.

“Gly”: Nice mine! Loved the wheel barrow. Looking forward to part 2 because typically the deeper you go the better the artifacts become. In mines like this often times the miners ate there lunch near the area where they were working and often times stashed there trash behind those walls of gobbing or up near the face of a backfilled drift.

I just heard that they would stash all their tools too? So one could guess they would also stash their cash there too?
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces 5 жыл бұрын
Dirk Diggler “Gly”: Most of the time tools were removed by the miners so that they could be used in other mines or sold. Often times only large objects are left behind because it takes men and money to remove them or the thought is that the mine might operate again in the future. No, it’s highly unlikely you’d find cash in a mine. In the early 1800’s up to the civil war if you had a mine you paid in gold dust or nuggets. Once paper money came around men that didn’t trust banks hid there cash amongst there personal items like in a mattress or some other secret place. If you want to find cash and coins I’d suggest metal detecting near landmarks such as large trees or rock outcroppings near old ghost towns and miners camps. Over the years many treasure hunters have found coins and cash hidden in tobacco tins near these places from miners that died and never told anyone where they stashed there booty.

It is interesting to see the change in types of stulls in the stopes. From old non processed round trees to squared off cut timers. The room and pillar method is a tried and true method still used today in many hardrock underground mines. We backfilled a lot of stopes with liquid slurry that hardened. Yeah when your hauling rock in a wheel barrow life sucks. There must have been a skip station somewhere on or above the main level to raise carts that far. If they hand cranked those bad boys they had some massive arms lol. They took a lot of ore out of that mine. Gobbing was an art learned when you were a nipper (if your mine used gobbing). Nice explore so far be careful of those false floors.

Maybe their cash? A ton of cash/gold went in to that hole! Great job Justin

Thank you. The can was empty... The sheet metal would be placed down where they were blasting to protect the rail and, yes, also to make mucking easier. You can email me at TVRExploring@gmail.com.

Looks like you spent a good few hours down this one! Nice size workings for a old mine too, it must have had a lot of rich lodes down there. We see the use of planks for wheelbarrows used a lot over in our old mines. Now looking forward to the next ep :)

Yes, this was a lengthier one, to be sure. And a good workout to get out of! I promise the next video is worth it - really phenomenal bottom level... Yes, the wheelbarrow immediately made me think of your mines. It is much less common for us though.

You ever find or hear of human remains in a mine? Its hard to image that some mines someone tried to keep private or only a few people worked it and could of died in a collapse and no one would know.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 5 жыл бұрын
We explored a mine a few years ago that still had human remains inside. The mine caved on a group of miners and the rescue effort was abandoned after it was determined that it was too dangerous to proceed in trying to get them out. That's my Niagara Mine series if you're curious.

Interesting mine! You could loose a worker easily in there, especially if they were injuries and couldn’t answer. This appears to be a very dry mine, could I assume it is in California? Do you ever take interesting items (mineral samples, dynamite boxes, large bags of gold👍, etc.) home from your explorations? Good job!

Sometimes we do. It depends on what we're expecting and where we're going. The longer the hike, the less likely it is we're going to bring rope if it isn't expected that we'll need it.
