Between June 12th and June 16th, 2021, I visited Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to catch trains on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad. Located in Marquette, Michigan, the LS&I is one of the Upper Peninsula’s last iron ore mining railroads. With 18 miles of mainline trackage and classic General Electric locomotives, there’s plenty to see on this unique railroad. Come along as we take you from mine to dock on the LS&I!

Very nice documentation of the LS&I and local CN ops. If you ever get the chance, I recommend chasing L540/539, the local that runs from Ishpeming to L'Anse and back. Numerous scenic areas along the way, easy 10mph chase, and a long 3% grade down to the lake in L'Anse.

this is awesome PBS should pick this up ( with Permission paying a fee to Sam loves trains of course. ) But it Educational and gives insight from beginning tp end. A lot people don't even know where steel even comes from. This shows the first step from mine to ship.

It's on my bucket list to see. I have the RR in HO scale, but haven't built the dock model yet. I have the 3073 and 3074 locomotives. Good video! Greg in TN :)

I’m glad to hear that they are gonna begin construction on the Charlotte & Alabama railroad pretty soon! Construction on this new Class 1 railroad in North America will begin by the end of August along with new cities being built as well. Here is another new Class 1 freight railroad that will also begin construction by the end of August! The Chicago & Northern Illinois Railway (reporting mark CNIL) is an American Class 1 railroad that begins in Chicago, Illinois, then into Northern Illinois passing through the now-closed NRE shops (Silvis and Dixmoor), and into Iowa. The carbody on CNIL's engines are painted yellow with the nose having a red square in black outlines with the white lettering 'CNIL' on it along with the back. The sides for these engines will feature the black lettering 'CHICAGO & NORTHERN ILLINOIS' on it as well. The roster has plenty of locomotives for the CNIL, so here is the full roster of diesel locomotives for the Chicago & Northern Illinois Railway: ET44ACs: #1000 to #1873 SD70ACe-T4s: #1874 to #2600 ES44ACs: #2601 to #3288 SD40-2s: #3289 to #3310 (ex-BNSF) C43-7Bs: #3311 to #3330 (Rebuilt from Brazilian MRS Logistica S.A. Dash 7s without a cab on the front) C30-7s: #3331 to #3341 (ex-RUMO Logistica and ALL Brazilian units) GP40-2s: #3342 to #3375 (ex-CSX) ET58ACs: #3376 to #3977 (Powerful Tier 4 GEVOs built by Wabtec with larger flared radiators on the rear) BEL44C4Ds: #3978 to #4921 (Battery-powered GEVOs) YS3Cs: #4922 to #4930 (Yard slug, rebuilt from retired BNSF SD40-2s used for switching service) SD70ACe-RCBs: #4931 to #5644 (Remote-controlled EMD SD70ACes with 4 axles, orange flashing RC lights on the top of both hoods, and an orange paint scheme with white 'REMOTE-CONTROLLED' lettering on both sides, the back, and the nose of the locomotives, plus a white CNIL patch under the numbers on both sides of the cab, making them mate with a rebuilt cab-less YS3C yard slug that is also remote-controlled but in the same orange RC livery to match the SD70ACe-RCBs that are similar to NJOI's remote-controlled 4-axle ACes which also have that livery but white NJOI patch on both sides of the cab under the numbers) SD70ACes: #5645 to #6700 ES44C4s: #6701 to #7777 ET44C4s: #7778 to #8999 GP38-2s: #9000 to #9007 (rebuilt from Amtrak GP38H-3s used for freight service as power for locals, downgraded to -2 electronics) SD70ACe-BBs: #9008 to #9999 (8-axle locomotives used for standard gauge trackage in North America) And this is the full roster of diesel locomotives for the Chicago & Northern Illinois Railway. Although Amtrak still has all 8 GP38H-3s used for work train service, all will be sold off to Progress Rail in Patterson, GA, where they are rebuilt for use in local freight service on CNIL once completed. Old locos will be saved from scrap via repainting into yellow CNIL colours. Once a CNIL locomotive is complete, it will test on the test track of their builders and also Pueblo, Colorado. On the CNIL, there are cab-less GE Dash 7s rebuilt without a cab by Erie, PA, from MRS Logistica S.A.'s Brazilian Dash 7s, ex-Brazilian C30-7s, yard slugs rebuilt on the frame of a BNSF SD40-2s, ET58AC GEVOs with bigger flares on the back, 8-axle EMDs used for standard gauge trackage, and more. It will also be the second railroad to have remote-controlled 4-axle SD70ACes used for switching service at various yards. They are similar to the ones from the New Jersey, Ohio, and Illinois Railway's, but CNIL's SD70ACe-RCBs will have the same orange paint scheme with white Remote Controlled lettering on them, but they have a white CNIL patch on them as well as the yard slugs (YS3C rebuilds) that need to be mated with them for switching service. The CNIL yard slugs have the same livery as the SD70ACe-RCBs, the only difference is that they also have no cab like the Dash 7s. Being used in local freight service are the ex-CSX GP40-2s and the GP38-2s rebuilt from retired Amtrak GP38H-3s that were formerly used in MOW service on Amtrak. The battery powered GEVOs also make a visit to that railroad as well, you know those BEL44C4Ds? So, with construction on the Chicago & Northern Illinois Railway set to begin by late August like the Charlotte & Alabama railroad along with new American cities being built too, is it OK if the 12th new Class 1 freight railroad in North America called the Chicago & Northern Illinois Railway (CNIL) replaces Kansas City Southern as well like the 11 others, SamLovesTrains?
