Please, make graphs, they are cool and simple to understand For example Speed (block/sec) ^ | | | | | _______________________________> normal tracks between powered ones And maybe you could add different colors for Minecart chest, hopper, TNT, empty, player, mob (and maybe furnace, they are really slow on powered rails!)

Xisuma, there is a *BIG* problem with your testing. you are including the slower acceleration of a single powered rail, you need to start the minecarts at their full speed before they hit the spaced rail system. If you start them with about four powered rails before the spacing test, they should be about full speed so you can get an accurate test. This can make that 1 second difference you observed. I always make multiple powered rails to start the cart to full speed before spacing out my powered booster sections.

Another thing to note with the resources, if it is a straight stretch then only 1 red stone block, torch, or lever is needed for a specific distance. With all of the rails separated, each needs a red stone block, lever, etc. Considering the amount of redstone needed to make the rails and blocks and the easiness of placing these power inputs, the most efficient method is to have a stretch of powered rails with 1 lever, then a gap later down the track at the point where the rail would lose power, then the stretch again. This method is probably best since it is easy to place, but not necessarily cost efficient as the space options.

+xisumavoid I believe the formula has a hard maximum for speed. Every powered rail raises the player in cart velocity by a certain amount. The decelaration seems to be a constant.(IE velocity fall per unit rail is constant.). Therefore V(n)= V(due to powered) minus (constant)n . Using the test where you found out the 126 block limit we can determine the constant. Using all this we can determine the final formula to be- V(n)= V(due to powered)-(constant)n + N(V(due to powered)). where n= no of normal rails, N = number of powered rails traversed already, v(n) = velocity at the nth V(due to powered) is the fixed velocity imparted by the powered rail. The FINAL FORMULA IS IN MY OPINION V(n)= [(N+1)V(due to powered)] minus (constant)*n

Another great video as usual :D, I'd like you to know that I really appreciate the time you put into this series. Perhaps you could make a part two where you use the equation: velocity = distance traveled (164 blocks in this case) divided by time (i.e. 20.28 seconds). Using these numbers, it can be calculated that the fastest velocity of a minecart is approximately 8.09 blocks per second. Keep up the good work!

don't forget the momentum variable... it has nothing to do with speed and its not like real world momentum... think of it as charge... running across say 8 powered rails will let you roll further over unpowered rails than using just a couple of powered rails to get your speed up.... the top speed of a minecart is limited but its momentum has a far higher limit.... try the same test but with 8 powered rails at the start of the track and you will notice that you can roll faster on the tracks with less powered rails meaning you can increase the speed on cheaper tracks, while still keeping them relatively cheap. :)

+AwesomeVindicator Thats what i was thinking...simply changing the number of spaces between powered rails isnt a conclusive way to test. Momentum also needs to be taken into account. I would love to see a follow up where, for example, every few blocks he puts multiple powered rails in a row and tests that as well.
@delson84
@delson84 8 жыл бұрын
+AwesomeVindicator Yeah. I don't think Xisuma realizes it only takes 3 powered rails, in a row, top off the cart's speed and momentum. Then supposedly 1 rail every 38 is enough to keep it going. I end up doing 1/32 because it's even though. I was hoping this video would explain why it works, but it never got into it.

+AwesomeVindicator I was thinking from the beginning on, he should boost the cart to full at first. Couldn't word it as good as you did, though, was more of a gut feeling. And today he tweets about how the wiki was wrong... even though it is due to his goofing of forgetting to boost them first to have a reliable basis to measure the velocity decay. Or did he mean something else with his tweet?

I read on the wiki that the time spent on a powered rail has a big influence. For example, if the minecart is going slow enough to be over the powered rail for 3 game ticks instead of 2, it will get 3 speed boosts instead of 2 and so, it will leave the powered rail with a significantly higher speed boost.

As I watched the follow-up video just today (same for this one), I figured out that the only way for a formula requires coding of some sort, and possibly a recursive function, because it is how many ticks a minecart is on a powered rail (explained in his follow-up... same for "why not 3 at the start?" question).

One thing you've missed. As I recall, it takes 4 consecutive powered rails to get up to top speed from a standstill. If you use the trigger rail (the one powered by the button, a normal rail, 4 powered rails to get you to full speed, then hit the periodic rails, what becomes the most efficient?) Further rail tests to consider: powered rail efficiency going uphill. The effect of corners. The effect of walls on minecarts (I've had some issues with nether-tunnels that use underground interchanges - having walls right next to a rail that is going down and around a corner (obviously the corners are flat, but the rest is sloped) somehow makes the minecart stop. Also, Gold is cheaper than Iron because Donuts are easier to build than Iron Titans. :p

You mentioned there being tiny inconsistencies in the time taken per track. If you look at where you demonstrate the speed loss of the empty minecarts, you can see that you're not placing them in exactly the same place on the first powered rail. This would grant the carts different amounts of speed from the first rail as they're on it for inconsistent amounts of time.

If I understand the wiki correctly, the speed of players, hoppers and chests is dependent on momentum. If that is true, it would be interesting to see how different loading conditions would effect the total time. As a specific case, you could try a chest with a redstone 2 signal's worth of items to see what an optimal strategy would be.

The most efficient is 1 powered rail between every 34 unpowered rails. For economy you can go up to 37 unpowered rails before you start to lose velocity. The rule of thumb I use is very simple: 32 normal rails, followed by 1 detector rail, 1 powered rail, and another detector rail. The 2 added detector rails give you 34 unpowered rails between each powered rail, and do the work of powering the powered rail in each direction. You could use a redstone torch to power the powered rail instead, but this makes laying track on cobblestone slabs in the air a bit less time efficient. 32 normal rails just happens to be one half stack, so laying out 32 is very easy to do without having to count them individually. Just cut your stack in half and put each half in your quick bar, and when the first half is used up, lay your detector rail pieces and your powered rail piece. Repeat further until your destination.

I did some testing in the newest version and the gold spot is 6 normal rails and 4 powered rails, this gives you almost consistant top speed of the minecart for the least amount of powered rails used, although iron is much more valuable than gold both in early game (more recipes require iron than gold) and in late game (iron farm less effective than gold farm) but hey, if you have surplus of iron and not enough gold somehow, do 6 rails/4 powered rails/6 rails and so on. It only maintains the top speed on even ground, if you got uneven terrain I suggest terraforming it or just slap on more powered rails.

I would suggest using 16 regular rails in between each powered one. This is because it makes it easy to count. All you must do is divide your stack of rails into 4. Also, with the slight speed drop, you would be fine. Finally, it is perfect for people who accidentally sent their empty minecarts back, as it won't make it to the next powered rail.

hi x, haven't done rail for a while but one of my first worlds was about 20,00 by 20,000 i had a grid network with lines 1000 apart. and i found to keep me at top speed that 32 rail and then 3 power was good as 32 was half of 64 (one stack) and therefore easy to lay a long stretch at a time. 3 power got you from standing to full speed. if the rail stepped up or down by 3 steps i immediately put down another three power and started the 32 count again. if i was going up a mountain i would place 3 power then 4 normal. the key here is that the 3 power was enough to get you to full speed and four or more didn't increase that speed. not having farms i had to be economical with power. hope minecraft hasn't changed that much to make this redundant. vincent

Personally, in my survival world (where I do a lot of transportation by rail), I begin any line with two or three powered rails, and from there, assuming it's a completely flat journey, I lay down one powered rail after every 32 regular rails. This way, I have a ratio of 2 powered rails for every full stack of regular rails. I've never had any problem with this setup, and I can get places fairly quickly (though it doesn't compare to elytra flight, obviously)

I got reeeally excited when they massively increased the top speed of mine carts. It made more sense. Min cart rails were much more convenient to use when I played in that snapshot. Real shame it got debuffed.

You need the rail to be strong enough to propel empty carts. That is so you can keep a cart at each end and send the extra back.

Mine carts can be boosted to full speed using 3 powered tracks and then you need a powered track every 22 blocks to maintain that speed.

X, did you do the tests exclusively in creative mode? I know that certain player characteristics behave differently between game modes, and I believe rate of travel is one of them (cf. the way tnt canons do not launch the player as high when in creative). Could end up making your testing results more logical! : )

You should test with multiple starting rails. I find that if you use 3 starting rails, you can put over 20 rails between single powered rails and not lose speed... I think it ends up being 27 rails between with no loss.

I was hoping you would have included a couple of tracks where there would have been 2 or 3 powered rails instead of just the one. Then again if the difference with a player passenger was so minimal with one powered track too, then it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference... My own experience just seems to indicate that one powered track doesn't properly boost you to full speed if they are pretty far apart, somewhere around 16 blocks or so. I guess I'll have to do some actual testing of my own.

So for me I like to use the Minecraft rail for a scenic yet speedy tour of my world. So I started with 19 blocks and the 20th being a powered rail. However I found that to be too fast for me. So then I removed every other 20th powered rail and use it as a powered rail So now its 39 and one powered. its still pretty fast though. My minecart system isnt that vast yet so I havent decided if I will be sticking with the 40 powered rail set up or expanding more. This of course is on a straight away and not including a slope/hill. Depending on the height of the hill it would obviously require powered rails. I like to use them in pairs on hills (IE I drop two powered rails together) so I dont get the chugging roller coaster feel. I also would like to note that I play on the xbox one platform. So the rails may be different.

Damn the results are surprisingly close I have always thought it would take a lot longer. Another test I would like you to look at to do with minecarts is the speed that a minecart with chest can travel and still get items from consecutive hoppers and the distance that is required to not double up on items when depositing items into hoppers for example in a furnace situation when you have a minecart go back and forth to deposit sticks as fuel how many blocks are required at each end to prevent the ends from getting too much or not enough sticks i think I know the answer but would be a great help to you and your subs as im only a tiny channel :)

You should try the test again with mobs in minecarts, and see if they travel at the same speed as the player. Try to remember one of your mathamatical errors could be software lag time between takes. If they all travel at the same time in a single run it would be a better comparison. And for that if you don't have thirty player friends, why not make friends with mobs :D

Xisuma, the most cost-effective rail system (for player in the minecart) is: 3 powered to start, then 1 powered rail every ~35 blocks. The easiest way to build is to do every 32 (half a stack).

Xisuma, I think a better test would be to start each track with 3 or more powered rails, so that the minecarts start at full speed. since you found that chest carts seem to go at the same speed as player carts, I think a good setup would be to have a bunch of them set up so a lever would activate the 3 powered rails at the start of the track, all at the same time. Then you would just have to fly above the end of the track and record the order in which they finish and how much time was between them finishing. Having the carts already at full speed with 3 or more powered rails is important to not disadvantage the longer spaced tracks in getting the minecart up to speed. Using this technique, I have heard that a spacing of 37 normal rails between powered rails is basically identical to a full track of powered rails for a distance of 1000 blocks.
@xisumavoid
@xisumavoid 8 жыл бұрын
+TroZ Sine the start is the same on each track it shouldnt matter right?
@TroZ_Games
@TroZ_Games 8 жыл бұрын
+xisumavoid it depends. if you are going to use these results for short runs, then they are probably fine. But for the track with a spacing of 30, you don't hit the third powered rail for 60 blocks in of the 160 length track, so you may not hit full speed until 1/3 of the track length has already passed.

I did some calculations, and I've come to a conclusion that gives a formula that produces a rough estimate of how long it takes for x amount of spaces between powered rails. I rounded everything to the 7th decimal place. The first equation is cubic, and does okay at determining the time it takes for x amount of spaces between powered rails: f(x) = 0.0001177x^3 - 0.0035286x^2 + 0.0524127x + 19.9114286 The second equation is quartic, and is more accurate than the cubic equation for lower numbers, but eventually becomes inaccurate (times decrease at 39 spaces between rails, and time becomes negative at 60 spaces): f(x) = -0.0000164x^4 + 0.0014317x^3 - 0.0390166x^2 + 0.4207850x + 18.75 The functions were created based on the values you gave us in the description of the video using a TI-84 Plus CE calculator. I could probably come up with more accurate values if given more data to work with. So, the cubic equation is probably your best bet, as it's a bit more inaccurate than the quartic one but gives better results for higher numbers.

Did some testing a long time ago. Found the number of powered rails at the start of a track mattered a fair bit. You can logic out from your tests that that is not the case any more. However, had you actually tried it? Specifically on the every eight and less frequent.

Due to how easy Snocrash's gold farm is to build, I honestly think powered rails are easier to get early on than normal rails. Iron farms are a pain in the ass to build; and iron can be annoyingly hard to come by in large quantities while mining. When I first start out a world, I almost always find that normal rails are more expensive for me to craft than powered rails.
