Looting ghast farms are highly obsidian efficient, so you don't need to build an obsidian farm in order to make a decent ghast farm. A special portal elevator for ghasts is demonstrated and can be adapted for most portal-type ghast farms. An example farm using 4 portals is shown in the tutorial, which produces 1100 ghast tears and 1400 gunpowder per hour using 364 obsidian blocks, which can be mined in less than 14 minutes with a diamond efficiency 5 pickaxe. The spawn area can be expanded up to 30 portals, using about 30 stacks of obsidian, and produces 7200 tears and 9000 gunpowder per hour.
There are reports on SPIGOT servers that ghasts do not spawn regularly in soul sand valleys, so this farm may not work properly.
On some PAPER servers, ghasts may retaliate with fireballs once the player attacks, and these fireballs may break the composters and glass in the killing chamber. In this case, replace the composters with upside down stair blocks made from a stone variant. Be sure to also spawnproof the top side of the upside down stair blocks (with a slab, for example). You can replace any broken glass blocks with wall blocks.
* You will need to add torches to prevent skeleton spawns in 1.19 - 1.19.2. Note the torches on the top of the portal frame and the torches next to the base of the portal frames.
imgur.com/jnXCiNj
imgur.com/a7vFQjW
Alternatively, you can use magma blocks as the spawning surface. Skeletons will still spawn in the portals, but will be instantly teleported away.

NOTES:
0:03 I had a cold when recording much of this video, so my voice is a little funny.
1:25 The farm could have been designed to have a spawning area under the nether roof, which would have been slightly more productive, but it comes at the expense of possible spawn potential interference from hostile mobs in the surrounding terrain and from striders in any nearby lava lakes. Construction of the portals would also be more dangerous due to the possibility of ghasts and skeletons shooting at you as you build.
4:00 If player will be flying close to the farm, you may want to cover both sides of the portal with glass so that ghasts cannot see out of the killing chamber. This prevents ghasts from shooting fireballs, which may break the composter(s) that holds them in place.
6:36 Press F3+G to bring up the chunk borders. Chunk borders are used to simplify aligning certain parts of the farm, but chunk alignment is not required, for example when upgrading a different ghast farm.
11:36 You can make your flint and steel last longer if you put more items into the hopper clock, since this lengthens the amount of time between alternating the portals. This approach is limited by ghasts entity cramming in the portal elevator if you lengthen the period too long.
16:15 Turning off the hopper clock will stop the use of flint and steel and let the farm operate without looting. Ghasts die from entity cramming in the overworld instead, and drops are teleported to the nether.
16:22 Fletchers may convert gravel to flint for you as an initial trade.

Knowing the mechanics make building it so much easier, since players would be able to troubleshoot it themselves if they made a mistake. This Minecraft Elegance series is truly a godsend. I've built plenty of farms in my time, but the one thing I've always disliked is how overly complicated many of them are, even the 'simple' ones. Massive massive fan of your content and what you do 🔥 For extra clarity in your instructions, could I suggest saying "wall of solid blocks" instead of "wall" when describing the barriers around the portals, as a "wall" is a type of block in of itself. This is super nitpicky, so please feel free to ignore, but perfect clarity seems like something you take very seriously so I thought I'd make the suggestion. Keep up the good work!

The consistency, design, explanation and the detail is amazing. The work you put into each video and the attention you give them, I really respect it! TLDR at the bottom. I was wondering, have you tried combing farms? I tried to work out a wither-skull (your design (ow side modified)) - ghast-tear hybrid just because I didn’t need a large amount of skulls/stars at once and seemed like a fun challenge. It worked out quite well only the killing/collecting drops (efficiently) part is a bit hard for me. I used the armor stand + sweeping trick to hit all the mobs only the blazes hit me back 😢. I don’t know if other people would be interested in a hybrid skull/star farm or others alike, but if the design is improved a bit it for sure is as easy as, if not easier than building both separate. If anyone read this let me know what you think, thanks! TLDR: Hybrid farm suggestion, for example combining a wither-skull farm with a ghast-tear farm.

Probably goes without saying, but as with shears in your honey farm, you can use Unbreaking on the flint & steel to get 4x as much use out of them, trading emeralds and books (and a bit of player time) for iron and flint to get longer AFK sessions. Up to the player if this is worthwhile.

Just a little warning sign here for those who want to build this farm and Ghast won't spawn. Make a 2 by 2 hole somewhere and throw eggs to spawn around 20 chickens inside, then go down the Nether roof exactly where you built the farm and kill all striders within about 20-30 blocks radius. This happens because of Spawn potential that ianxofour said about in the beginning of the video, also gnembon explained that mathematically in his video. Great video as always!

Unfortunately, the rates on this farm are pretty bad in 1.19. I built the full 30 portal farm with the glass skirt and it only spawns ~3-5 ghasts/min. Platforms are fully lit up, tops of portals are slabbed, it just seems like this farm needs to be reworked for 1.19. EDIT: Also, somehow Skeletons continue to spawn with light levels over the whole platforms at 12 or higher. EDIT 2: So I have managed to massively improve the spawn rates, after replacing the spawning platforms with a checkerboard pattern of blocks and light blocks (I.E. Glowstone or Shroomlights) that seems to have cut down on the skeleton spawns (they are still spawning, but I have no idea how) and increased the Ghast spawns, the farm still isn't operating at the levels stated in the video, but it is much more serviceable now for 1.19. ALSO, note to self, do not go into the portal while the farm is running, ghasts will escape when you go back to the AFK spot portal.

i got sad when i see this since i already got a ghast farm until "or if u already have a ghast farm, you can convert it to a looting ghast farm ", you are an absolute legend. anyways, question, can i stack your design on top of shulkercraft's design ?, so i dont need that much obsidian if i want to expand my farm

1.19 Paper Add trap doors to the killing chambers 2 obsidian blocks above the red glass. This moves you back a little and the ghast will no longer retaliate. Great work on the farms and videos!

[deleted my comment] Spawning rules have changed several times over the last few versions. When I ran tests in 19.x, ghasts would not spawn on lighting blocks (like Jacks or froglights), so the apparently easy solution of building the platform out of froglights (which are solid and should be spawnable) does not work. In 1.20 you'll be fine if you light up the platforms, or use magma blocks.
@lumipakkanen3510

Thanks! I was getting a few skeletons at first and then basically nothing, but replacing the spawning platforms with magma blocks fixed that and now have enough ghast tears to start refighting the dragon. EDIT: Skeletons are completely gone in 1.19.3. I guess they were spawning inside the nether portals in previous versions.

Did that, Im getting the same ghast spawn rate as before but now I also gotta deal with the skeletons in the afk portal, Id suggest just stick with lighting the whole platforms with torches

@@kayakbuday5642 Just have the water stream transport them into a campfire in the overworld. Skeletons will push each other out of the portal.

these farms are really really good but very small thing for the explanation, i think it may be a bit confusing as to why you need to alternate portals, not just leave one on for 15 secs so they go back through (ik why this happens but seeing as this farm explains its concept in such a perfect way it may be one of the first farms a beginner sees) just food for thought. btw ur channel is a gold mine of amazing farms i looked through a bunch of them and am now subbed criminally underrated
@AlexanderScott66
@AlexanderScott66 8 ай бұрын
I tested it. You technically could use just one always lit portal, but you would need to move the ghasts out and back in after 15 seconds. Using 2 that alternate prevents a ghast from spawning a new portal somewhere else but leaves time for the cooldown to end. I opted to change the overworld set up with just a simple water stream and a chunk loader using a netherportal far below it and minecarts so that the ghasts can move while the player is in the nether

Just finished building it, it work fine (for those who play in 1.19.2 dont forget to had torches!!!) but i made the bigger version with pack spawning platform and it produce something like 6800gp and 4900 tears/hours. Its more than enough but far away from your rates. Thanks for your tutorial and keep the good work!

Works great in 1.20. Built it in drips and draps throughout the day. Probably a couple of hours in total. Perfectly fine to AFK it for 10 mins or so then kill everything that's accumulated. Solved my gunpowder problem. Thanks a lot.
