The results are in, no more guessing! Eric and I created a Canadian coin test garden and put the Equinox to the test, the results may surprise you. As the manufacture recommends Park mode for new sites, this test was based on those default settings. Does discrimination really make a difference? What about iron bias? Or maybe Park 1 vs Park 2? Sensitivity the reason? My test answered all my questions and confirmed the Equinox can find Canadian coins including our steel core clad. With my results the settings you use will make the difference if your digging them or not. I may be guilty of thinking people were just not digging the jumpy signal or they were just going for the bang ons, this may have never been the case. I’ve attached a video as an audio visual of what is happening.
My conclusion
Park 1 default settings using discrimination. You will not find 2001 and up Nickels, Dimes, loonies or 2012 twoonies and up. They do not come up by a target ID nor audio. Only a double line - -. You can dig quarters 2001-2020 and twoonies minted up to 2012. Unfortunately, in Park 1 all steel core coins are omitted with the exception of quarters. All coins that pre date 2001 will come into the nickel range 13, 14, 15.
Park 1 default setting using all metal. All steel core coins will give you negative numbers only. They will range from -1 to -9 including the quarter that we could see when we used discrimination. The nickel plate is completely omitted.
Park 1 default settings using zero iron bias, the result was the same as above and didn’t make much of a difference.
Park 2 default settings using discrimination. All Steel core coins rang into the positive range from 2 to 17, the tone pitch seems to be set higher and would get your attention. All pre 2001 nickel coins came in within the nickel range.
Park 2 default setting without discrimination. The steel core clad nickels and dimes came into the negatives and positives jumping from -2 to +17 with the exception of the quarter, the same thing accrued in park 1, in all metal the quarter only gave me negative numbers from -2 to -8.
The best mode to find steel core clad is Park 2 using discrimination. I even tested field 2 vs park 2 and I have to say there is a difference and Park 2 is the best setting by far.
Thank you so much for watching!
