San Diego's rich gem history is mostly forgotten, but signs of its rockstar past are everywhere. Join veteran mineral dealer Thomas Nagin as he explores local geology - kayaking La Jolla’s sea caves, visiting the birthplace of kunzite, and the Pala Gem mining district, renowned for bluecap and pink tourmaline. We also visit the Gemological Institute of America and view a top mineral collector’s private collection.

This is my favorite episode since it’s in my home state and tourmaline is my favorite mineral. Thank you for making this series because I have really enjoyed it and learned a lot about mineral localities around the world. Hopefully someday you can release a new season.

When it comes to crystals , im absolutely spoiled. I'm from central ARKANSAS, i can close my eyes throw a rock and hit a WORLD CLASS QUARTZ CRYSTAL MINE. But believe it or not there are still some secret spots that knowbody knows of ...IV got a spot ..where the last 10 years I know for sure I'm the only one digging out there ..and it's literally 380 acres of land ...all to my self ..it's crazy !!! But I love it!!!

Living about 35 miles north of these mines I've had great success in finding a wide variety of quartz in my area. From citrine to smokey and many with beautiful petroleum inclusions. This episode makes me want to check out the creeks in Pala.

I live close to a now abandonded mine in San Bernardino County which is the only other place in California where its found. Ive found some nice small blue crystals , several large smoky quartz points and lepidiolite . Just yesterday i found one with dark red crystals ( very tiny singles and larger granular ( but still small) that i havent been able to identify yet. My dream is to be the discoverer of something new .......ya just never know !!! Also. Going to the Pala mine for my 60 th birthday next week and i am SO EXCITED !!!!

Gem mining with explosives destroys about 60% of what the location COULD yield. Most of the time it actually destroys more. I've seen instances where up to 80% gets destroyed or broken. Hand tools the old fashioned way is still king. Slow is how you go...

One can also drill small diameter test holes and feel the rock as you drill.. to relatively shallow depths if need be, and use small amounts of powder. 💥 is an art, and you can go very small to huge and everything in between. It's a great tool to use imo to make good progression into a deposit, and to see what only your grandchildren would have seen if you had only been using hand tools

Love the video, but I kept waiting for the whole thing to come down on their heads. So dangerous! And why isn't anybody wearing respirators? You breath enough of that rock dust, you've got a world of hurt coming later in life. Can you say, COPD?

The mine owner got super weird after everyone started picking up the quartz, his idea to spread out the debris with a bob cat to find nicer crystals and comment that he would throw a perfect one away because this method was going to uncover much nicer ones; he's shitting his pants over the idea that he might kick crumbs down to people he should be breaking bread with. Not a fan of this character.

Nothing weird there. Quartz crystals don’t pay the bills, when you’re putting seven figures into the ground.

Forgive me if I'm naive, but due to natural erosion, wouldn't it serve mankind better to rely on natural process to bring those beautiful crystals to the surface? I don't understand why you need to blast a hole and make a safe place to dig. Humans being greedy destroy what was meant for all of us to prosper later, together.
