I’d be interested to see 5x5 chess, where the starting position would have pawns on the second and fourth ranks, a king and 4 symmetrically organized pieces on the 1st and 5th ranks, and an empty 3rd rank. Obviously it would be much, much more complicated, as this sort of thing grows in complexity exponentially, but I think it would be the smallest setup that doesn’t have guaranteed mates or draws for white from every starting position.

Fun fact: If White tries to avoid a draw in the thumbnail position by not playing the immediate stalemate, everything else leads to Black winning by force.

The trickiest attempt is Ba2, which can easily lead to other stalemates (like Ba2, Rxc1+, Bb1, Bc2). But after Ba2, Rxc1+, Bb1, Rc3, Ba2, Bc2 White is ultimately forced to move the bishop to a square where Black's bishop can take it without stalemating White.

In a very popular sitcom in Mexico and here in Brazil called "El Chavo del Ocho" or just "Chaves", there is an episode where the character Quico draws a "chessboard for beginners". When you play with smaller boards, you often have to weaken pieces to make it fun and interesting. In school, we would play chess on half a board (4x8) so that every square starts with a piece on it. Pawns could only capture pawns; pawns couldn't move two spaces from the starting rank; promotion was allowed on the back rank, but often we would use a checker piece to show the promoted pawn could move like a king now 1 space in any direction but was not royal (no check or checkmate).

What about 5×5 chess where you take the pieces from files a-e and place white on rank 1-2 and black on rank 4-5 (ranks 2 and 4 being pawns). White pawns promote on rank 5 instead of 8. Then preserve chess rules like queenside castling, double pawn move, and en passant, and then play.

Here's how to balance it: both players have to do their moves at the same time. Each has a way to write their chosen move down, both don't show until a ref calls for the move to be shown. If the players moves conflict, they rock paper scissors to see which one gets to prioritize their move. Winner moves their piece and the other cannot move theirs until the next move. If both moves end in check, then each has to make a move that gets their king out of check at the same time, same as before. In the event of a King lockdown, the board resets. If a player made a move that would have a piece take their enemy (example, Rook takes Rook), but their enemy made a move that predicted that attack (Bishop moves to original rook space) then the move ends with the counter take being the final move. If this move ends in either King piece being in check, the one in check automatically loses. However, if both are in check at the time of this move, then the King dual check rule applies. If a King Lockout occurs, then the King Lockout rule applies. Winner is declared when only one King is in check or both of a player's non king pieces are taken.

The trouble with the thumbnail board (KBR) is that it's only stalemate in one if white wants it to be, and a since stalemate is a draw, I'm not sure it's the best option for white. Granted, I haven't exhaustively searched white's other options to figure out if there are any better ones, but I doubt any skilled player on white would open with rook takes c3.

the interesting game here is to allow both players to choose their own starting setup, and chart which setups lose to which other setups I suspect king and 2 queens should still be dominant for white, but maybe there's at least rock-paper-scissors to be played about which position to put the kings in (invalid starting positions with both kings in check would obviously count as a draw, I imagine)

It is not clear to me that a variant with only bishops is insufficient material on a 3x3 board. It is on an 8x8 board, but the options on a 3x3 board are more limited. But I assume it is impossible to put the king in check on that particular board as all the bishops are on opposite color squares of the king.
@GopherpilledTunneler
@GopherpilledTunneler Жыл бұрын
If you think about the chessboard as 3x3 with only kings, you'll see that the king always has an opposite colored square to move to. Since the bishops can only be on dark squares (the only legal 2 bishop variation is having both kings in the middle), both kings will always be able to move out of check (from dark to light) or be stuck in stalemate (on light and can't move to dark). So it is stalemate no matter what moves are played.

@@piotrgebocki6444 No it isn't unless Black makes a mistake. White moves without taking. Black takes the advanced piece with their bishop. White retakes with their other piece. Black captures that one with their rook. White threatens with their King, their only legal move. Black retreats. White kings returns to their original spot. Black moves rook to original position of White's rook, checkmate. It doesn't require repetition of moves and there is a clear path to a Black checkmate after only one move by each of the players in that position after the initial exchange. There is a distinct possibility of a draw if Black plays sub-optimally as White would have to in order to end up in that variation to begin with, but it's not a guaranteed stalemate or draw.
