Sooooo..... I must say that before starting this I was really nervous because if something goes wrong (I am mega clumsy and I do love a bodge haha!) it can be very costly. I was genuinely shocked at how straightforward it was and as long as you are careful there is no reason this cannot be done at home, I mean why pay a mechanic £600-1000 to do something you can do yourself!
If i had to guess, I would say that it took me around 7-8 hours and a lot of that was faffing with recordings etc. (also remember that a lot of my engine bay was already removed so that also helped!) Neither me or Jon had done this before but we smashed it! Truthfully (and as you will see...) we didn't even end up following the manual as I couldn't really understand the instructions. Whether this is the right way of doing a cam chain replacement or not who knows but we have a new chain and it runs like a charm!
PLEASE BE AWARE, DO NOT TURN THE SPROCKET PULLER BY HAND AS IT MAY TURN THE WHOLE SPROCKET AND MUCK UP THE ENGINE TIMING - We used an impact gun and this worked for us.
As always, be careful and have fun!

Thanks to your video I've just spent the last 3 days replacing my timing chain. It was very awkward, as most things are on an R53. Most of the time was spent removing parts to get to the chain and then replacing the parts once it was fitted. I did refer to your video a couple of times to check I was on the right course. Keep your videos coming. They're great!

I have been chasing an issue in my R52 for months that caused it to go into limp mode. I finally gave up and had a mechanic look at it. Turns out the cranks shaft pulley (/harmonic balancer) rubber had perished. The pulley was wobbling, and scrapped up the timing chain cover. He replaced it, plus the front main seal and belt, and seems much better. I think I could have done it myself after watching this video, but just didn't have the time or energy. Next year, I hope to get back to some maintenance - supercharger oil change, oil cooler gaskets. Plus try my hand at redoing the flaking clearcoat.

You can definitely insert the guides with the chain in place, even without the front end already ripped off for ease of work. Also the crank sprocket dot (the top one) should be right on that line on the block. If it all lines up properly your pistons should all be even plane using equal rods for measure. I had severe chain stretch and both the cam and the crank sprockets jumped teeth so I had to time from scratch. While I was there I replaced everything with a complete timing kit.
@ModAMiniGarage

That's really interesting I did not know that! Live and learn everyday! I don't think it's to bad a job on these mini's to be honest it takes time but it's not particularly hard to do. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Miriam xx

@@ModAMiniGarage definitely not a difficult job I had to complete my timing job on my butt, in the dark with a flashlight (and a small auxiliary light) because my r53 is my daily transporter to work. Wheels up to wheels down was about 4 hours as I was taking care of things while I was there as well. I can confidently say I can do the job in half the time wheels up to down. I think the toughest part is getting the pin in for the belt removal man who designed that nonsense as a solo job...

One very important thing you missed... you NEED to put anti sieze on any stainless fasteners especially when going into a dissimilar metal like aluminum. My guess is that at least a few of those valve cover bolts are now in there for good and will need drilling. The longer you wait to take them out and put them in properly with anti sieze the less likely you are to get them out at all especially if some road salt gets in there and speeds up the corrosion (yes aluminum corrodes in case you didnt know that, its the white powdery build up you can get off with a wire brush). If that is a returning customer i strongly recommend getting the car back in there to do that because it would really suck to have to do a cylinder head replacement or at the very least removal and repair if those bolts were to snap.
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 3 жыл бұрын

Apologies for the late reply! @ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 2 жыл бұрын
To discharge safely you need a machine that will essentially suck out what you have left in, it connects to the valves you mention and removes all the gas. Any company that does ac regases should be able to do this :) The only other way is to release the gas to the atmosphere, this is ILLEGAL in the UK, if you are in Israel as your name suggests this may be different but its very bad for the environment and shouldn't be done. Yea, unfortunately, it's been flagged for copyright :( So the audio cuts out... I really need to remake it! Thanks for watching and commenting! Miriam xx

I don't know why but when it comes to the important parts of the video the sound cuts out.. especially when you're explaining the timing and taking it off. Makes it a bit difficult.

Apologies yea we know :( unfortunately we have a copyright claim on the music and it removes all sound at those points :( it's really annoying but we need to re record it one day. Feel free to give us a call and I'm sure we can help :) Miriam xx

It’s unfortunate but I think you are trying to capitalize on ModMini’s channel

Thanks for watching :) you are correct, we are in no way associated with Mod Mini - we do however love his videos and content :) We run a company in the UK www.modamini.co.uk so our KZfaq channel maintains this branding. Our channel was originally Mod A Mini... We renamed it and added 'Garage' when we realised the similarities to help differentiate between the 2 :) hope that this helps! Miriam

Sound is horrific. You have muted most of the talking.

Unfortunately the music in the video got copyrighted and KZfaq cut the sound out where the talking should be really annoyed but there's nothing we can do about it :( I will need to remake the videos sometime but its really hard as this took HOURS! Sorry its not the best 😞 Miriam xx
