Jalopnik's Patrick George and Mike Ballaban debate whether Mini Coopers are fun and quirky or lame and tacky, whether Germans know how to tell a joke, and if Patrick needs an intervention for owning Mini Coopers.

Fiat 500 could compete with Mini....like 6 or 7 years ago. The fact that the 500 is riding on a 11-year old structure is kind of ridiculous, and that's why it falls so flat on modern crash tests. And at least for me, safety in a car is a must, especially for these sporty types of vehicles.

My Abarth was a fun car but, the interior was falling apart, both armrests had broken, the cars emblems were all fading and the DAY I turned her in the driver side window fell off the track. They still gave me $11,000 for it. It’s a pity that Fiat build quality is so poor because otherwise I loved the car. But my Countryman is far and away better built.

Mid 2010 got an updated engine. The JCW got theirs later. It addresses some common failures. The S versions sometimes have premature turbo failures and other minor problems that can become big. Pay attention to it, and do the maintenance and they seem to hold up fine. Use the dealer recommended intervals only and you're in for a world of hurt, it seems.

I have a 2011 mini cooper s. Ive put almost 100k on it with no serious issues. There have been a decent amount of small issues. I Cant say whether its more or less then your average car since it is my first vehicle. What I really love about it is its interior. I am someone who likes doing things on my own and in my own way and although hard to explain, my mini does that for me. The interior is simple and clean, and the controls, dials and readouts give off this feeling of simplicity and manual control. I have been in countless car interiors with really poorly designed button layouts, with air con systems that try to do all the work without you, shitty huge, satiny digital readouts. Basically what I am saying is the mini feels alot more analog, vs digital lets say. Which means a fucking lot to me.

i much rather own a mini, than a fiat. Its got infinitely more character, i admit some of their decisions are uh, rather questionable in the styling department (looking at you mini coupe, my god that thing cant possibly be any uglier) but overall they are very nice looking cars. As for reliability, i rather have a German car over an Italian car any day (i am, in fact, Italian myself so don't think i'm biased) considering Germany and its cars are generally known for reliability and durability, and every Italian car I've driven/owned felt like it was falling apart right off the dealership. I always like the strawman argument that MINIs aren't mini anymore. Like they are huge cars now. They are only big in comparison to the original which is truly tiny. They are still the smallest in their segment. And considering they are stuffed with all the latest in tech, safety, and luxury requirements, its no surprise they weigh quite a bit more than the original.

I’ve had my 2011 R56 (2nd gen) for 3 years and I haven’t had any major issues with it reliability-wise. Sure it rattles a bit, but the engine has been rock solid for me. Only issue I’ve had was the AC condenser going out last year, and the VANOS solenoid gave me some trouble right after I got it 2nd hand from my local mini dealer. It was a CPO car though so it was covered under warranty. For each generation, you gotta make sure you get the later models. So for the R56, go 2011+ to get the more reliable N18 engine, and for the R53, try and get a 2005-2006 car. These cars are an absolute blast with a lot of character. 100% on Patrick’s side. Am I biased? Probably. Is the Abarth still a great car? Hell yeah! That 4 cylinder sounds like heaven. All these hatches are great

My ‘06 mcs was so fun I wanted to keep it forever but the dealer and a specialist shop couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t start on cold days. That was the final straw after 10yr of regular repairs. Does that make it good or bad? I wasn’t remotely tempted to get another mini. 2nd and 3rd gen focused on cartoonish styling and comfort. They lost the ‘fun’ go-cart feel and despite performance improvements, fell way behind the competition.

JJNews13 Mine is built in the Netherlands, and I highly doubt even one Brit contributed to the design, but I can guarantee that a lot of German was spoken at the time.
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 6 жыл бұрын
The British were heavily involved in the design and things such as the leather stitching and the quirkiness of the controls, and the wonderful styling that pays homage to the original without compromising space efficiency for real sized people, in other words the British did the pretty parts and the Germans took care of the engineering and what you end up with is a surprisingly roomie, and unsurprisingly fun-to-drive since that is what most people know them for vehicle that will last you many years without any troubles. Mine is 10 years old, never been garaged, has only been to the shop to have dents taken out from people jumping on the hood, I guess jealous, but everything mechanical has worked flawlessly even though I haven't been the best at keeping up with the service intervals. It's now got way over a hundred thousand miles and still starts on the first click, the convertible top still works flawlessly and the fabric doesn't even need to be replaced even though it's black and it's set out in mini hot summers, these cars are BMW quality and yes they were more expensive than other small cars when they were new, but particularly those early Generations were built like tanks. The door is almost as thick as my Caprice. And it has the Chrome accent package for the interior and two tone Leather So the impression is more of a mini Bentley rather than a small BMW because of the Chrome Grille and all the attention to details that generation had. Later when they move the speedometer and started putting computer screens everywhere in them they lost some of the analog charm that kind of was the whole point of making a retro vehicle.

hahaha i really liked this segment...its endless also i had driven a fiat 500 (rental ) for like a week and i must say it was horrible..the materials and seats were bad. But the mini were soo much better. So what if its like bmw. Everyone in the industry is copying the germans. Even the germans are copying each other. There is nothing like minis on the road ..so it makes it unique. As for the price and maintenance i guess thats different

Being someone who owns a base first gen BMW Mini. I enjoy the hell out of the little car. It's great on gas and fun to drive. To me it's a go cart that still handles like a car should. Seriously for 4k it's a great little car that I have no regrets buying it used after three years. It's been super reliable and easy to own.

I've owned an r53 for over a year now. Hands down my favorite car so far. I compared it to a friend Cooper S coupe, and prefer my supercharger over turbo. It's an 06 so it skips a lot of first stage issues. It's fun. I have modded it, and it really brings more of the car out. Extra power is nice, and the only repairs I've had to do were basic maintenance, replacements, or problems I caused myself that I fixed. Other than that, the car has been great. But make sure you have a second car for when you need to order your parts online. Lesson learned on that. 😶

In 2018 The R53 Mini is tons of cool fun for around $5k, and with a little research and parts price scouting, you can maintain it fairly cheaply, paying mind to the electric power steering pump, strut towers and bushings, and namely the lower control arm bushings. Make sure the cooling fan and system are happy and that the supercharger and it’s water pump PTO gears are well lubed and that you glue down the door jamb seals after treating the minor hidden rust. Keep water out from beneath the front footwell carpet and you have a happy car. Make sure sunroof and AC condensate drains are clear. If the engine sounds weird, it’s probably the cheap timing belt guides or the tensioner strut bushings. Rust underneath the taillights can happen in some cases, but not all. Whatever. Get one, install a supercharger upgrade pulley, shorter belt, colder plugs, and enjoy for a few years. Screw the runflats and get roadside or carry a spare tire for long trips. The early New Mini is the best looking one, and is a good value for those who do their research. It’s not as expensive as you think if you do some work yourself.

Karnegis You say that, but the people I know who buy newer mustangs don't really care a massive amount about the history, they just want a badass car. In fact, basically all the cars you mentioned are better now than ever before, objectively that is. So although the name sells, the fact that the cars are also great now and better than ever before and will continue to improve, is a big selling point for alot if people. American cars used to be poorly built, ugly cars that couldn't turn, but that's not the case anymore.

half their argument goes away when you realize you can easily find a Mini S for $5k.. and as for the interior.. I'm 6'10 and I fit in them and can see out the windshield better than I can my dad's Challenger. Also they don't sound like utter shit like most 4 cylinder cars.. they almost sound like a BMW motorcycle. (odd how that works) Oh and while they are designed in Germany, they are built in... Oxford England.. You sure as hell wouldn't catch me in any other compact car..

I have a mini r53 and its the most comfortable, fun car i've ever owned (except when going over speed bumps), the interior is nice and not cheaply made (there is some torx bolts which would've been nice to have covered up on the door cards), the boot is impractically small made even smaller by the optional cd changer, its 5 speed midlands gearbox is abit shit but the 6 speed is better and the radiator cap isnt a pressure cap so an aftermarket one is recommended, overall dispite its small issues which are solvable apart from the boot space unless you fold the seats down it is a wonderful little car, it looks cute, its extremely fun to drive, its very comfortable and still good for long journeys

My 2005 mini Cooper S is, bar none, the most fun car Ive ever owned. It wasnt terribly fast, even after extensive mods, but no fwd car handles anywhere close. The steering was fantastic, the gearbox is the best I've shifted. The throttle response has made every turbo car I drive nowadays feels lazy and sluggish even with that tiny 1.6l supercharged motor. True, it always needed something. It had 165k when I got rid of it, but damn was it a fun car. I'll be hunting for a GP1 soon.

This is the first non junkyard car I've owned, I've owned 40ish. the age of the 50-200 buck car is over, so I finally financed a car. They’re too cartoonish. I was at the Dallas auto show back in 2010. I sat in a Mini Cooper and got trapped. The reclining seat lever for the driver seat is located right next to the center console. With the seat in the current position it was in from the previous short person, I had to reach my hand behind the seat and attempt to adjust the toggle from behind the center console. The toggle released, the seat fell back, and I was stuck in a position with my hand pinned between the driver seat and the center console. With my free left hand I tried to lift the lever to raise the seat, but with my body weight pressing on the back rest, I could not raise it with my arm stuck behind the console. My only option was to open the door and yell for help at one of the Mini attendants. This female representative came over and saw how stuck I was and pulled up on the back rest so I could retrieve my arm. I thanked her and she asked if I was OK and I showed her the mark on my arm from where I had been stuck. A little scrape, not much blood. She gave me a look like “I don’t think I could sell you a car, now” we lucked it off, but I was seriously confused as to why a car company would design something in that manor. Screw that sort of engineering.
