Mini-ITX Alternative to NZXT H1: Hyte Revolt 3 Case Review & Benchmarks

iBUYPOWER is now making cases in addition to its pre-builts. The Hyte Revolt 3 is a mini-ITX case that resembles the NZXT H1, except without a PCIe riser. We're reviewing it.
Sponsor: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 (Amazon) geni.us/RJBy and Arctic MX-5 Thermal Paste (Amazon) - geni.us/EXf0I
The Hyte Revolt 3 ends up being mostly a visual alternative to the NZXT H1; it's similar in aesthetic, although technically a bit larger and different internally. The Revolt 3 is perforated on most sides and has complex airflow pathways given the GPU and CPU potentially cross-circulating air. Our testing looks at different airflow pathways and optimal configurations.
We did an mITX case roundup that’s still relevant here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9ScmtNkrcypZX0.html
We also recently looked at Minisforum’s disastrous SFF PC here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJqVlN17rte2eJs.html
We liked Fractal’s Torrent case and you can see that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fqioopWQ0d2voKc.html
Intel’s recent Beast Canyon NUC may also be a good consideration in a similar size: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9-lgtujtc3Lcac.html

for mini itx cases, i think this is a great approach where you recommend the best cooling config for that particular case. mini itx is more design driven (subjective), has varying limitations based on case, and people are willing to spend more on them, so it's less important to compare case to case on an apples to apples basis. if people know what the various cases are capable of (cooling wise), they can choose their pick between price/performance/aesthetics.

Built a rig i've been using for roughly a year now in this case. It's got good airflow. The fans on a founders 2080 ti and a ryzen 5800 with 240mm aio provide all the airflow in the case. The founders 2080 ti fan/cooler setup is kinda ideal for this case imo; it pulls air in through the front and out of the mesh sides. The mesh panels don't really work as dust filters as the holes are too large and only keep out larger particles like pet hair and whatnot. Did my first de-dusting a few weeks back and a thin layer of talcum like dust accumulated on the fan blades, radiator, etc (get a lot of dust living in a dry desert climate). However the easy to remove panels make regular cleaning fairly simple, especially for a mini-itx case. Really easy to open this thing up and clean the major components. Only downside in my instance was that I am using my motherboard's built in wifi for internet connection. There's room at the bottom of the case for the motherboard's provided antenna, however, when standing upright the antenna are completely concealed within the case. This was creating a nasty Faraday cage effect and high packet loss. I had to buy a separate, extended, desktop antenna to replace the stock motherboard ones.

For standardizing mini-ITX testing, the different supported hardware is part of the features of the case. Standardizing is simple: use the same brands or families of hardware, in an optimal or recommended build. Say, Scythe or Noctua fans in supported sizes, some model of clc available in multiple sizes, a couple of popular air CPU coolers where you pick the largest one that fits. That's the most useful way to compare these cases. I'd love to see these reviews with GN thoroughness! The fact that the hardware is different is the feature of the case. Love the look of this one, and the vertical form factor takes up much less desk space. Wish this existed when I did my last build!

Random thought- I'd bet the exhaust fans from an original xbox 360 would perfectly fit in that spot where the 80 mil fans can go. The 360 used a dual 80 mil fan setup built into a single frame. You'd have to wire up your own connector though (it has a weird proprietary connector/pinout, of course) and mounting it would require some creativity.

Old review by now, but I hope you guys keep doing SFF reviews. For 20+ years dating back to the old Shuttle shoeboxes, I've always found compact pc builds interesting and pay attention to the various case options. They're less necessary these days thanks to streaming options like Moonlight or Steam Link, but as someone who spends a lot of time living in downtown metro areas, I meet plenty of people who only have one non-laptop PC in their homes and oftentimes they go for tiny builds. I'd love to see you guys review the new orginpc Chronos v3 prebuilt, and also the Ssupd Meshlicious (yes, more "tower" style sff cases, I love that tiny footprint).

Would love to see your take on some newer mainstream ITX cases like the Cooler Master NR200 and the SSUPD Meshlicious.

I second wanting to see reviews for these cases. Especially because the NR200p can actually fit some of the GN standardized testing. I have the Meshlicious as my daily driver and I have never seen any remotely concerning temps from any part of my system. Only downside to it is a lack of cable management.

Surprised you guys havent reviewed the SSUPD meshlicious yet? It actually has insanely good thermals / very optimised airflow layout.

It'd make more sense for a case like this to use a similar layout to the Series X. Have the mainboard mount horizontally on the bottom, and then use a vertical riser for the GPU, and then have two 140mm intake fans on the first three sides of the case while the GPU takes up the fourth side, and then have all of that heat exhaust out the top with an L adapter for the HDMI out from the GPU. That way, this case could've also supported a standard tower heatsink or even potentially a passive heatsink with three-way air intake and then one big top exhaust fan.

the ssupd meshlicious i would say is the better alternative to the H1, somehow i was able to just fit an msi gaming z trio 3060ti into it

picked up this case for $130 off newegg with the power supply. been a fan of the minimalistic look of it and very excited to build in it. i have a msi 3060ti gaming trio and was very happy to see it supported it. excited to see how the thermals look in this case on the gpu since the heatsink is completely overkill on it.

Good stuff. Hoping you'll take a look at the Silverstone Alta G1M once it comes out - looking like a return to the older Fortress FT03, and I'm curious how that upward air tunnel style stands up with a new case in 2021.

As somebody who used to have to get a stream setup to/from events, a tower like this that came with the pelican case would have been an easy sell for me, pre-covid

To this day nothing beats the the LOUQE Ghost S1 because of its modularity. So many ITX cases just keep focusing on making the base configuration fit, my options were to either buy an S1 or give up and buy a micro ATX case so I could fit several hard drives. As long as there will be SATA ports on ITX boards, I will keep using them...

Ya’ll really got to review more ITX cases and do some kind of showdown or something. Also reviews for cases that are actually available. So many cool little cases that just straight up sold out

Just to address closing remarks - I think everyone would appreciate your ITX reviews regardless of whether they're standardized or not. Just testing an ITX case and specifying the components used is plenty valuable for potential buyers, as it gives them metrics to go off of.

The top exhaust mounts for the GPU are a nice thought, but surely it would have made a lot more sense to have them on the side of the case, running alongside the natural exhaust path of most modern GPUs. Ditching the top handle could have allowed for a full size top exhaust, if that was combined with side exhaust fans running along the edge of the GPU, they could have created a system where you could run the CLC in intake for better CPU thermals, while also partially isolating the GPU from the heated air.

Hello GN. I really like your case reviews, and it would be really great if you kept testing some of the most popular SFF cases. I understand it is difficult to standardize the testing methodology given that almost all SFF cases have different restrictions, but I think a good compromise could be just standardizing the main components (CPU, MoBo, GPU), and changing the cooling solution according to the capabilities of each case. Like, you could test the smallest cases with 47mm coolers, and bigger cases like this one with 240 aios, and maybe even comparing cooling of GPUs if you're able to get the same GPU in different sizes (like a 210-240mm dual slot 3060ti and a 3 slot 300mm+ 3060ti). This way, you can show the cooling capabilities of each case, which I guess is the point when testing SFF cases, since it really ends up being a matter of how good does a case can cool the components with the space available, and each person can choose according with the size they want/need. You could maybe even test the ability to pack the computer in a bag or in a small space, along with other components like keyboard, mouse, etc. , since that is a real use case for the smaller SFF cases

The Thermaltake Core V21 is still my favorite small cube case. Could fit a mATX, full sized GPU and CPU cooler, and a full sized PSU. only thing I hated was the cheap plastic for the feet, and the front panel ports also used cheap plastic that ended up snapping off.
