Oy, I can honestly say that I can't remember seeing one of these, brand new, with so many issues. I'm pretty sure I would have marched back in and set it on the counter and asked for a different one long ago. You have the patience of Job. You have also made me skeered to look closely at the POS I have sitting out in the garage, afraid I am going to find out mine is as FUBAR'ed as yours. I do have to agree that you have quickly become my favorite Mini Lathe channel hands down. Out of the hundreds I have watched, none have come even close to going into such detail and your videography and editing skills are superb. Vroom Vroom buddy! Already waiting for the next installment.

Hi Phil, yes, the joys of buying stuff on the internet sight unseen. I'm starting to think these un-branded cheapo mini lathes, are assembled from the parts that didn't make spec for the name brand versions they produce. They probably figure why throw them away when you can assemble them into machines & sell them off cheap, to suckers like me. Lucky I like a challenge. Cheers Mate

@@TheAussieShed That seems to be why mini lathes have earned such a poor reputation. In many cases there is more wrong than right with them straight out of the box.

@@123hurst3 They are for people who dont have lots of money. If chinese would make these lathes perfect, it would cost 2000-5000$. Its not worth it. If you want precise machinery then you buy 2000$+ lathe in first place. Mini lathe is for small hobbyists

Same thing on the left. Once set the adjustments are done. Pay lots of attention to keeping the lead screw clean. Also de burr the lead screw, some are quite rough. Thanks

I had this problem , but all i did was loosened the leadscrew on the right hand side of the lathe , raised it a bit , tightened it up and its done .

Instead of putting an edge to the tightening screws let them flat and put a small bearing ball inside the hole worked really fine on my lathe !!

Hi On my mini lathe when I reset the lead screw and carriage, I run the carriage all the way to the right then with the lead screw bearing loose I close the half nuts on the lead screw, Then tighten the bolts in the bearing. I have the half nuts set to close as much as possible. Thanks

Man. Thanks a million for all your efforts AND generosity in sharing everything with us. Awesome job. I was seriously considering buying one of these (once I've finally saved up enough to fix my rotting teeth, and then saved up enough again to buy one....!). You are doing the work of a saint. Looks like I'll be spending a bit more on a lathe than what I first thought. Do you have any experience with the Sieg lathes? I was looking at the sc3 model because I live in a tiny unit and it's small and cheap, but after watching your videos I'm feeling a little shy about these little fellas in general. I'm hoping that the bigger sc4 model Sieg is made a little better. Do you have any ideas about it? Cheers.

Great set of videos I have similar lathe. Do you have any details regarding the locking mechanism of the tail stock to the lathe bed, as would like to add this feature to my lathe Cheers

I'm wondering about the manufacture of these lathes. I suspect rather than being made at one big factory, they are made buy numerous entrepreneurs who buy the casting in various states of machining, and assemble them as home work. I also promise to make a video of my George Adams 3" x 16" lathe from the 1930's. Poor tolerances in mini lathes is not new.

G'day Mate, firstly Thanks for your donation, really kind of you. People such as yourself are what keeps the Chanel going. Unfortunately I'm not quite there yet, as in, this being a fully functioning Lathe. Shouldn't be to long now though. I have made a few bits & pieces on it that were needed for the recent treadmill motor conversion & it performed extremely well, other than being under powered. It did break the original tiny drive belt though in the process, due to the fairly heavy cuts that it does with ease now, for a machine of this size. The writing was on the wall though, hence the new Bigger Motor & Vee Belt Drive Line. Worth it.......... For Me a big Yes. But as you can see it has taken a lot of time & effort to do. So for others maybe not. As Sad as it may seem I actually enjoy the Challenge of this kinda stuff, I find it good Therapy. Again Thanks for your Donation, Cheers Mate.

i'd like to see someone address those cross slide 'pivot mounts' - those seem like a REAL weak link ... from what i can tell

Hi, just occurred to me when seeing the misaligned lead screw to nut of 0.5mm. Why not make new nut and screw asap after rebuild with 1mm smaller diameter lead screw. Even 2mm smaller out of better materials like bronze nut and heat treated A4, O1 or W1. That way you still get strength required and a more compact designed. Could then make lead nut two piece for back lash eliminating design.

When you are done Trevor, just send me your mini lathe, thanks. Oh, the sander would be good too :) You can call the gib strip a gib screw all you want - I automatically correct it before it gets to my conscious. I forget the "Gib" bit though, so it ends up as the triangular strip thing.

With respect to the gibs, straighten them first and then flip them over and recut the divots on the clean surface. When marking out for the new divots install temporary gib screws (sharpened to a point) to get perfect alignment.

I have a 7"x14" Mini-Lathe, Paid $595 for it. I'm not saying the Lathe didn't have a few adjustment that where needed. But for the Price what was expected? I am viewing your vids and the amount of work your doing..... Is the effort worth the value of the machine? I mean for that much Time, Effort, and Money being spent to upgrade, You could have simply bought a Precision Mathews Lathe.

Hi Joe, the Effort, well yes, for me it is. I quite enjoy this sort of thing. Gets me out of the house & into the shed, away from the Missus etc. As for the cost, I've really spent sweet F*** all on the modifications. The Main drive I have for making KZfaq Vids, is to show Folks what can be achieved with Basic knowledge, General Workshop Tools & just good old fashioned hard work. Sure, starting with a better lathe would be great, but due to my location there are very limited options for me. Not to mention I only have an area big enough for the Mini Lathe. Which pretty much makes it my only option. I know this kind of thing isn't for everyone and thats totally fine, I guess its more of a personal fit kind of thing. Anyhow, Cheers Mate.

After seeing you and all the poor machining, I have made my mind up to purchase an older high quality machine and rebuild that. If it’s a name brand machine parts will be available.
