Essentially, watercolor is a type of ink that uses gummiarabic as a binder. I use it all the times. In most cases how well watercolor will work with a pen depends on the particular brand and color, you just need to try different ones to find what works best. The feeling of the nib gliding more roughly over paper may even be something that you want. Also, I usually mix larger amount of paint with water in advance using digital scales, so I can remember and replicate the proportion for optimal thickness and color saturation.

That watercolor works in dip pens shouldn’t surprise anyone. What I wanted to show is that you can work directly from a watercolor palette, and load the pen with a brush. This allows you mix small quantities and make quick color changes.

Awesome stuff Marc. I just found your channel 2 weeks ago, and have been hooked ever since. I appreciate all the information you put out on your YT channel. I've been on a 5 year hiatus from drawing and painting, which I thought would never happen, but your videos and the work you do have pushed me to pick things back up. I've never used a fountain pen before, only brush pens, but just ordered a Duke 600 w/ a Fude nib and some Lexington Gray ink, and I can't wait to start experimenting. Not sure if that's a good combo for a first timer, but it sure seems fun nonetheless. Quick question, will your "Sketching People in Pen & Watercolor" online workshop ever be available as a streaming class in the future?

What is the advantage of watercolor in a dip pen over ink in a dip pen?

A number come to mind. It allows you to use your pen with a large palette of colors, and make quick adjustments to the color as you work. And because you’re loading the nib with a brush, you don’t need to mix large quantities of paint. I suppose you could do something similar with inks, but water soluble inks contain no binder, and do not layer as well as watercolor, and waterproof inks cannot be used dry from a palette, so you would have to work from bottles, a messy proposition.
