Mini luxury! Wood & Pickett Margrave from 1973

What an astonishing little Mini this is, making a Mayfair look more like pure austerity. Originally a Mini Clubman, Wood & Pickett turned up the luxury to create the Margrave, while owner Roger has added a few tweaks of his own, including a sports exhaust and a 1310cc engine. The result is sheer enjoyment on a tiny scale.

Imagine if your daily commute is 20 miles of twisty B-roads in this, with lively engine and exhaust noises and with this brilliant finish. I would be extremely happy.

Yeah, I have a Ford XR6 (Think Betty with a bit more style and punch) and I was seriously disappointed when I put it on a twisty mountain road and tried to push it! Compared to my long lost Mini, it was a nightmare!

For five years I had a 20-mile commute, each way, between Henlow and the AC Delco factory in Dunstable. I drove an ex-works 1071 Mini Cooper S along mostly narrow country lanes, with a couple of short stretches of A road and B road thrown in. It was an absolute blast! There were a few places where I would exceed 90 mph, traffic permitting, and after a year or so I knew every passing place and likely gate from where a farmer might back out pulling a trailer full of straw bales. And they did. I've had the good fortune to own and drive some fantastic cars over the years, but no commute could ever be as exhilarating as that one. The job paid well, but the company sucked. I was actually sorry to be recruited and move away, but only until my 'commuting' took me travelling all over the world in different cars in multiple countries. Occasionally I wonder what that particular cross-country commute would be like today. Probably awful, I suspect. Too many slow cars with even slower drivers clogging up some great lanes we once used for car club night rallys.

Brings back sooooo many memories! The rorty exhaust, whine of the gearbox , it’s all there. Used to have a 1380cc, 12G940 head , twin SUs , and a 731 cam. Acceleration, incredible. You mentioned Downton Engineering, there was an eccentric character if ever there was one. Daniel Richmond knew how to tune cars though. His students were Gordon Spice who went on to race 3.0 Capris, Ralph Broad from Broadspeed Engineering, Jan Odur who became Janspeed Engineering , David Vizard who wrote various Mini tuning books , what a line up !

Martin , I gather Daniel's wife , April , was the formidable businesswoman and smelt ' money ' when his talents in engine tuning became obviously apparent .Issigonis , not an advocate of making his cars go faster , eventually had to give in under pressure from George Harriman of BMC , to adopt faster models and after a drink or three at the local pub that Daniel frequented , BMC Special Tuning came about.

I had a 1380 Avonbar engine in a Metro back in the late 80s; lightened and balanced, tuftrided crank/flywheel, omega pistons, gas-flowed, big valve head, with a 1¾ su on a swanneck and RC40 based exhaust. My that thing could shift, yet below about 3500 revs it was as docile as any shopping trolley. I always wanted to try one in a mini but never managed it. I had it rebuilt by what turned out to be a cowboy and it blew up while still running in 😢

Oh, these sounds - deep joy! Had an Innocenti 1300 Cooper with balanced motor, LCB, RC40, etc. in the '90s. What a great little beast that was - did 110mph paced by a calibrated poilice car Omega we had, but at 6,000+rpm! Negative camber rear trailing arms and 165/70/SR10 Dunlop SP Sports meant it handled as well - much better than the '90s Cooper rehash that was deeply disappionting on its 12" wheels... A good Mini is ike a driveable Jack Russell Terrier...

The mini is said to be one of the most modified cars ever. I always loved the Wood and Pickett mini's as well as Crayfords as well as the more recent David Brown specials. The fact you could spec a humble mini as such a luxury item is so amazing. I think someone even had one with wicker doors (Peter Sellars possibly). They are just a cool little car for everyone. I'm lucky enough to own a 1969 mini Jem kit car and it basically uses mini mechanicals in a fibreglass coupe body and I love it for its bonkersness (is that even a word 🙂) thanks for sharing such a fabulous car with us all she's a beauty!!

My late godfather Ernie Boxall worked for Wood and Pickett and made the wood dashes for the mini conversions as well as being registered to modify Rolls Royce interiors. I remember him saying that the design was a shrunken mk10 Jaguar dash with assistance from Smith's with the shrunken gauges. He also told me that BL would only supply complete cars as W&P would have preferred a shell and running gear.

I was reading about Wood & Pickett earlier today in an old copy of Classic Retro Modern, so jumped at your video. What a lovely car. Pedant alert: the licence plate is not period authentic. As a 1973 car, it would have originally worn mandatory white front/yellow rear plates. The white/yellow plates were introduced in 1968 and most people opted for them before they became mandatory because it made your car look modern and new. Nowadays the black plates with white letters look cool and retro. But in the 70s they were an “old banger indicator”.

I remember in the late 1980s the Foreign and Commonwealth office in London used a small fleet of black minis to shuttle documents around Whitehall. I had a friend in the diplomatic service who used to wait outside the FCO to greet the speeding black mini pulling up with papers from MI6 and take others to the Cabinet office etc. The days before email were more interesting!

I remember seeing a modified Mini at an Earls Court motor show in the mid 70’s it had two tone paint work in Champagne over chestnut brown with a 24Kt Gold coach line the carpets were Wilton and the seats I think were upholstered in green Drayton velvet. The dash was veneered in burr walnut and the rear seat side pockets had a small wooden insert on the top with a chrome plated clip for Champagne glasses. The rear pockets were designated as Champagne panniers which very much amused me at the time. Don’t know who built it it may have been Wood and Picket. There may have been an Allegro Vanden Plas in a similar colour scheme displayed along side.

I had a couple of Minis when I was young. My first was very tired but my second was a Clubman Estate with the 1100 engine, that was so much better in every way. The handling even on my tired one was epic though. Back then it was a choice between a 2CV and a Mini, the Mini won but given the choice today I'd go for the 2CV as I'm no longer as flexible as I used to be so getting in and out could be quite difficult.

Fabulous - love the 'coachbuilt' Minis of the '60s and '70s and this one is a gem. W&P's first Mini customer was the actor Laurence Harvey in 1966, they converted a Mk1 Cooper S for him and painted it gold, a little later they built a Mk2 Cooper S for him which was painted brownish bronze.

I have owned two minis a 1986 red city which was my second car, and then an older 1978 1275GT. I needed to replace my first one because the early 20 ish Me did not think that I could ever run out of talent, if you get lift off overseer in a mini and you do not have the guts and room to keep your foot in then it will all go very wrong, very quickly! I still have a soft spot for all things Mini to this day.

Marvellous review Ian of a 1970s icon .Wood & Pickett aftermarket Mini accessories were a must for every ' serious ' Mini owner , espeially their full width front and rear chrome ' nudge ' bars with little round rubber ' doughnut ' protective buffers , the rears were like huge spectacles protecting the rear lamps and boot lid. Also , the polished wiper aerofoils as on this beautiful car, ' to stop lift at speed ' !.I'm recommisioning my recently acquired 1961 Austin Seven Mini and busy resourcing all those period extras.

Wow! What a fabulous Mini, I remember these coming out, but haven't ever seen one, so this was a real treat, thanks (Glad you're feeling better now). My first car was a 1960 Mini Minor 850, and I absolutely loved it, kept it 8 years all through college and university, even moved house in it, what an adventure that was. Owned a 1990 Mini Cooper 1275 around 1998/2000, and boy did that go some, so much fun; there is truly no other car like a Mini, they are absolutely brilliant to drive: So wish I still had one, even here in Canada where cars are enormous.

The difficulty moving-off smoothly: does it lack an engine steady bar, maybe? ISTR recall that one of the first signs that the bar mountings were shot, or the bulkhead end had rusted away, was a tendency to lurch away from rest! Lovely little car though, but as you say, not for motorway work 🙂
