Mental health and illness are considered to be one of the major education problems relating to the global health priorities. Mental healthcare systems around the world have been calling to increase the participation and contribution of medical professionals and organisations including Paramedics to improve their skills in assessing patients who are struggling with their mental health.
Ambulance services across the UK are enduring increasing, unsustainable demand on emergency medical services where much of this rising demand involves mental health calls and issues which can range from a relapse of a serious mental illness through to self-harm or a crisis related to social issues or relationship breakdown.
The Mental Status Examination (MSE) is a vital tool for paramedics in assessing a patient's psychological functioning during mental health emergency situations. It provides a structured method to evaluate various cognitive and emotional aspects, including appearance, behaviour, mood, thought processes, perception, cognition, insight, and judgement. By systematically observing and documenting these areas, paramedics can gain critical insights into the individual's mental health, aiding in immediate decision-making and intervention.
Mental healthcare experts worldwide have been calling for increased contributions from medical professionals and organisations to
improve the skills of healthcare practitioners and their coordination with mentally ill patients. However, the contributions and roles of
paramedics in treating the mentally ill are still considered limited, and few studies have been conducted on paramedics’ judgement
and decision-making when caring for patients with mental illness.
