As a lifelong Londoner this game was exactly my jam when I tried it out. The London Tube map is a design icon, and getting to re-create it was so fun. On the London level, I loved imagining all of the real-life stations near to where I was placing mine. On the other levels, it was like imagining I was visiting these cool places, riding a Shinkansen etc. Great game. Glad you're enjoying it

I'm on the hype train, pun intended. Mini Metro isn't just a "chill game" to me. I was suffering from depression in college, and when I was stuck in a funk and unable to do anything, sometimes I'd play Mini Metro. I don't know if it's the focus required, the chill atmosphere (to an extent, even when you're about to fail), or what, but it would consistently help. Video games can't replace professional help, but when you're too stubborn and stupid to admit you have a problem, it can help.

One thing to keep in mind: A longer line that cycles between symbols (at least the most common ones) can often be more efficient than a shorter line that has a long string of the same symbol, since cycling between symbols means that each person doesn't have to be on the train for as long, so there's more effective capacity.

I've been playing this since it came out. It's so awesome! It's like Bejeweled 3 in that you can set yourself a good challenge if you want, but the endless mode on this is akin to the Zen mode on Bejeweled in that it removes any chance of losing so you can just relax. Both games are perfect for me when I'm getting anxious. Bejeweled 3 also has optional zen sounds to help chill you out. These games are must haves for those who need some extra chill in their lives. Mini Metro is also available on mobile and isn't loaded with ads ❤️

I guess, if it doesn't matter WHICH square/triangle/etc. they get to, just that they get to *A* square/triangle/etc. the best layout would be to try and alternate as best as possible - rather than having -four- five circles in a row on the same line.
@ajbXYZcool
@ajbXYZcool 4 жыл бұрын
One thing I'm noticing is you tend to have strain at stations when the line tends to end in multiple stations of the same type. Let's say it's not a loop, so one end is 3 circles. The first of these last 3 (as it's heading towards that end) had some squares waiting. Those squares won't be picked up because there's no square station in that direction. It would pick them up in their way back. Also, any circle passengers would be dropped off at that first station - you're only picking up new passengers at the next one. I believe the goal when making your route efficient is to do the best to stagger stations, and loops seem to be a good idea too since all of that's routes stations are available, so you'd be able to pick up new passengers consistently.

And now for my lengthy, unstructured gameplay advice comment. 3:40: No, no it is not. Loops are generally more efficient than straight lines (all else held equal), and having multiple lines (meaning tracks, not the shape) is always more efficient if laid out well. Of course, both straight lines and single track-lines have their uses, but they're a more situational tool. 5:40: Good choice on where to stop the line. Squares are fairly rare, so they're a good choice for hub stations. (The unique shapes are also good, for the same reason...as long as they're fairly central, which they usually aren't until a good while has passed.) 8:50: There's always a lot of circle stations. They are the bane of miniature metros. (In MtG terms: Circles are common, triangles are uncommon, squares are rare, and other shapes are mythic rares.) 10:00: Yes, you should have connected it to red. Good choice. I would have dragged the line between the two circle stations over, though. In my experience, travel time between stations is generally less important than how many passengers you can unload at each station. Triangle passengers never spawn at triangles, so a line of three triangles won't be able to unload _any_ passengers until they get to a non-triangle station. Chaining circle-triangle as much as is practical is a good strategy, especially late-game. 11:40: Loops are generally better. Lines leave some stations underserved; loops distribute the load better. At least I assume that's why my lines do better when I loop them. Another point is that passengers only get on a train if it's going in the direction that gets them to their destination in the shortest possible time, give the current line setup; if you have a loop with all trains going the same way, they'll just get on the train, but if you have a line, _they might wait until the train turns around and comes back._ 16:20: You can remove trains from lines. This is useful if, say, you've drastically reduced one line to the point that it doesn't need to locomotives and a carriage. 24:00, 26:30: Unique stations are a critical component of the train system. There are, generally speaking, two ways to deal with it-make a bunch of efficient loops that can easily transfer passengers between them, or use the unique stations as hubs that all the lines go to. Generally speaking, you'll end up somewhere in the middle due to all the other constraints put on you. 24:40: Wedge? Sector? Quarter-circle? 32:50: Yes. I always pause before editing the line. On one hand, this means that if I mess something up or need to do something finicky I won't feel like I'm on a time limit. On the other hand, it also means I can quickly change things on the fly when there's an emergency; for instance, I like to keep a spare line unused that I can add and remove to relieve stress on whatever station is currently under stress. On a third hand, my engineers don't like driving on lines while I'm editing them. 41:00: Sometimes, you just need to uproot a line and replace it with something completely new. Which is why there's a "delete line" button. (Note: You get all the lines, trains, etc back once the train drops off its last passengers. There's no cost.)

I actually look at metro maps for inspiration on this game. Most maps use a central set of loops to distribute passengers effectively to feeder lines that efficiently bring passengers to the inner loop. They also use parallel feeder trains to increase the efficiency of the inherently inefficient nature of back and forth trains.
@ChimeratAlpha
@ChimeratAlpha 3 жыл бұрын
Zen for you, high-stress for those who are watching from home. ;) Main point I'd make is that you have too many lines that stick to the same symbol for multiple stops. I believe you had four or more stations in a row that shared the same shape. That means your trains are much more likely to not have any room when they reach the later stations, since they weren't able to drop off any passengers between them. (Circle passengers never appear at Circle stations, of course, so you can't remove anything if you have four Circles stations in a row.)

I don't know if Dan realizes that stations don't create passengers of the same shape so you don't want multiple in a row since it means that they won't be able to drop off any. At the end he had 4 triangles in a row and three circles on red, four circles in a row on green, and three circles on yellow.

I liked watching this, trying to puzzle things out along with you, Dan. One thing I noticed was that lines with a lot of the same shapes on it tend to struggle, since the train has to go further before it can let people off, but it's hard to do anything about since the same shapes tend to crowd together on the map. I think where I learned about this game was a Games You May Not Have Tried. I ended up getting it from the Gamelyst beta and it's one of the games I spent the most time with. I should probably actually buy it from somewhere with human money dollars instead of failed dreams.

really wanna see you do a breakdown of crafting systems in games, especially FFXIV vs a more classic crafting system like WoW but i get thats probably a super hard topic to get into given the amount of time investment crafting systems usually take.

If I'm honest, I don't find the challenge mode to be very relaxing. 'Cause when the stations start reaching capacity and you have tons of trains going in the wrong direction, I start to panic. Thankfully it has a casual mode where stations won't fill to capacity, and you can go as long as you feel.
