This one didn't go as intended, but in the end I managed to make something. I had a steam engine that I got from Banggood, which I found by performing some tests, that it could work also as an air pump if driven by an electric motor, or in my case a nitro engine. For some reason it didn't work as I would like to, it could inflate a balloon at best. I spent some time on it, so I decided to make a small DC generator by removing the steam engine and replacing it with an electric motor. If I was to make a generator from the beginning, I wouldn't have used this engine nor this motor as generator. Instead I would use a bigger engine (at least 4.5cc) and a brushless motor as generator with a 3 phase rectifier.

Their generators are terrible. Every person I know that ran to harbor freight to get a generator before the hurricane we had in Florida's last year, busted before the hurricane was over. It's good for an hour on/hour off and half their wattage rating type of situations. You can't run them over a few hours and expect them to work again
@DaveDablave

Andrew Delashaw I wonder how many of those people actually followed the break-in instructions and change the oil after the first 10 hours like you supposed to. Everything breaks if you mistreat it. I ran mine for almost 40 hours straight at 80% capacity. Never had an issue. Probably have over 300 hours on it now.

A better air pump would be the internals of a small fridge. Those run smooth and can do REALLY high pressures.
@kubaxd25
@kubaxd25 6 жыл бұрын
But fridge compressors don't have much flow, so pumping tire without big bottle of air wouldn't be so quick. The best compressor can be made with an engine. It needs a lot of power, but there is a lot of flow.

Lovely. You might want to consider adding a different generator, electric motor made for RC cars. Those are 3 phase with permanent magnets. There is no commutator to wear out and they are more efficient in generation. Also, no belts, common shaft only. You are loosing power with belts.

Someone below mentioned a suggestion of Johnny making a mini lawnmower. Sounds awesome! In fact, a few years ago I tried to make a miniature weed whacker out of a $60 0.64cc mini rc airplane engine but never could figure out how to complete a few parts so I scratched that idea. Unfortunately I got rid of the parts a fews years before getting a 3d printer which would have been able to help complete my project. Lesson learned, I’ll keep my stuff next time. I hope eventually Johnny will come up with that as a project idea. I mean, he already made a nitro chainsaw.

Wow impressive and yes i'm that kind that was almost injuried before reading the description about the future improvements (brushless, bigger motor...). I have another thought about your design : a heavy flywheel to smooth out and give some buffer to those really lightweight engines also it's kinda simple to turn a servo motor into a voltage tied regulator for the throttle. I'll keep an eye on your work you are a true artist
@SeanHodgins
@SeanHodgins 6 жыл бұрын
I've been wanting to do this, but also make a servo controller that regulates the voltage/current output and will adjust the throttle accordingly. Collab? I could design and program the electronics.
@cmulder002
@cmulder002 6 жыл бұрын
it already exists ; model helicopters use a "governor" system to maintain constant rpm with varying loads. The futaba gv-1 is one example ; but align has a unit too. Then you also need a so called "servo tester" to give the signal the governor needs to set the rpm and a voltage regulator "bec" to provide the 5v required. all these are off the shelf rc components.

AllU but at more than 9 volts, so with a transformer you could at least get 1.5 amps 5V which is nice.
@runforitman
@runforitman 6 жыл бұрын
11.50 volts (v) at 0.8 amps (i) p=v*i 11.5*0.8=9.2 Watts (p) i=p/v 9.2/5= 1.8 So that’s a theoretical output of 1.8 amps 5v at 1.8a isn’t too shabby (In a perfect world though, if you had a 100% efficiency rate And also assuming my maths is right) (Also I know his meter says what the Watts are, but it just makes it a bit clearer to show it)
@runforitman
@runforitman 6 жыл бұрын
But you’d have some losses from the transformation method And from the current limiter (I think you’d need a current limiter to make sure you don’t stall the engine) But also These numbers aren’t the max of what the motor can do At higher revs, it could produce more power for an even higher output

.65 horsepower is just shy of 500 Watts if 1 horsepower is 750 Watts. I'm not sure how efficient he can make it, but I would guess he could make a couple hundred watts of power.

@AfterDark33 6 жыл бұрын
Usually, full-size generators run at about 2/3rds efficiency at full running load, and since you would need a reasonably highly reducing geartrain, that's at max 80% efficient, you would achieve a maximum of 280 watts, however, although my original estimation may be a bit off, I still think 280 is a big stretch, considering there is no automatic throttle governor, and using electric motors as generators is definitely less efficient than a purpose built one. I think you would be hard-pressed to get more than 200 watts out of one, unless you used purpose-built parts.

To save on the amount of epoxy resin you can use a wooden mold to be later lathed away giving a really nice metal trapped in epoxy look. That brass embedded would look amazing.

Very cool. Definitely something I would do haha. I was impressed when the leads shorted to each other a couple of times and the engine albeit with a load, powered right through it. Wonder if you could find a 12volt regulator and really put out some amps and steady voltage. If that could sustain 10-15 amps at 12 volts, you could wire an inverter (12v) to it and plug in household items like a 100 watt light bulb, cell charger, laptop charger, alarm clock, who knows what all else.

You've got some awesome tools, and the skills to use them. Kudo to you. But ! That's got to be the loudest camping light I've ever seen 😁

It is very good! You can complete it with an 12v to 220 or 110v inverter and also you can use an 1/5 rc car engine which uses petrol (more power and less noise!)

Incredible craftsmanship dude! That engine seemed like it still had plenty of power running that 20 watt load, how many watts can you get before you stall the engine at full throttle?

Try using acetone to fume your prints, might work well to seal them for these applications? Still love every vid you've been making, great craftsmanship!

A lot of tests your doing may work better if there was a bridge rectifier before you connect it to a DC objet your running a dc motor with an AC source. But love the project. Keep up the good work

Add a decent expansion chamber to the exhaust so that it can run more efficiently. You could even make a pipe that is tuned to the preferred rpm for the generator to push out the required power.
