Really like that you are branching out into alternatives to the van conversion Neil. After looking at van conversions from every angle, as well as small class C motorhomes, I've come to the conclusion that the truck camper truly offers the most versatility and the least compromises. I've pretty much narrowed it down to an Adventurer 86FB on a 1 ton DRW. For way less than 80K I'll have 4 season capability, generous tank capacities, a permanent bed, lots of storage, an awesome galley, a spare bed when needed, and a wetbath that I can actually get into and use in comfort. And all that in around 21 ft going down the road. Please give us more TC reviews Neil.

Is this going to be a new series on your channel? Truck camper reviews and comparisons? Would love to see that happen. I’m torn between a class B and a truck camper. Your videos are so informative and I’m sure I’m not the only one who would enjoy and benefit from some videos.

lol - i'm soooo sorry! I don't do it on purpose! honestly, I was NOT sold or even thinking about truck campers before I did this video. but some viewers recommended that I give one a try. so I did and in the process of researching and digging in and looking more closely at it I've actually become a convert and a fan of truck campers.. not to say that my love for camper vans has diminished in the least - it hasn't but my channel is about being ultra-mobile and truck campers tick off so many boxes to allow that to happen for people - not the least of which is practicality and price. I mean you can get the exact chassis that you want: want a RAM? Ford? GM? Toyota? Want a 4x4? 4WD? 2 door? 4 Door? rears seats with properly crash and safety tested 3-pt seat belts? want to travel around with everyone in the cab? it's just so practical. then you can get all kinds of different truck campers: some with slides, some without, some with enough beds for everyone, some with bunks, some with dry baths. and you can get so many more that are 4 season capable. and then to top it all off you can get it for what, under $40k if you already own a truck? or maybe $80k for brand new everything? plus the brand new truck will depreciate less on its own? Yes there are definite down sides like all RVs and I'll cover those more fully in the full review but I am so happy to hear that this video and my channel is actually helping you sort through what you actually want and need BEFORE you make a very big purchase decision. thank you so much for letting me know. makes my day.

Ultramobility oh I know it’s fantastic and I’d lose the microwave and get the optional propane oven. The kitchens in truck campers and travel trailers are fantastic . One of my top choices is the 19 foot Airtsteam Travel Trailer. It has a massive kitchen. And I’ve seen a lot of videos on how to upgrade these trailers with Lithium and extra solar for boondocking. I could easily see myself full timing in an Airstream Trailer. Also one of the benefits of a truck camper or travel trailer is if the tow vehicle needs maintenance your not homeless while it’s being worked on.

After looking at class B's for a long time, a few weeks ago started looking at Truck Campers. It just seems to be more bang for the buck. Plus there is no Registration Fee with the Camper, it is Cargo. And the Cirrus has ducted heat that blows under the bed. Like many RV"s there are tradeoffs, but I sure do like the Cirrus.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 жыл бұрын
excellent point about the registration fee. that heated air below the bed is a big deal for truck campers with beds above the cab since air tends to cool rapidly due to the overhang and moisture can collect. so the heating under there plus the Froli sleep system which allows air circulation tells me that the designers at NuCamp have done their homework. I've watched videos of other truck camper owners who have problems with moisture condensation under the mattress dues to the cab overhang.

Neil, I really appreciate you branching into truck campers. I see them as the only real alternative to camper vans. Since I have a family, the camper vans were just too small, and hence, I started looking into truck campers. I, like you, was pleasantly surprised with what I found. I hope you eventually find time to look at the large triple slides by Host and Eagle Cap. With three slides these are truly apartments on wheels.

it is amazing the size of some of these truck campers! with 1,2 even 3 slides they are as large as some smaller class A rigs! If everyone wants me to continue to review truck campers I will certainly do so. I love'd this rig!

Please DO continue pickup truck slide-in reviews. For the last year my wife and I have been discussing a downsize from our Prevost Marathon bus conversion to a nicely equipped class-B van conversion. So now ... there is something else in the discussion. Not that we are unfamiliar with truck campers, but this new model changes our opinion from “rough and uncomfortable” to “uniquely designed”. A couple of things that I need to think over ... (1) the nearly 13’ height, and (2) the lack of an inverter. I can probably do my own inverter and even lithium battery install, but not a lot can be done about the rig being a tall crosswind catcher. Our bus is 13.5’ but immensely heavier. A stiff crosswind will make me slow down to more easily control tracking. I’m concerned about how a much lighter truck camper would handle in a crosswind. Of course I’d want a truck with “dual” rears, and husky suspension. I will have to look into what handling features are available for Ford, Chevy, and Ram. By the way I like the convenience of setting the camper beside my garage at home and using the pickup truck for hauling “stuff” for home projects. Maybe I can be one of those jerks that parks a monster pickup truck in a shopping center parking space to piss people off. 🤣

Well, if you're a Doctor Who fan, there's absolutely NO mystery re: how big it is inside vs. how small it looks from the outside: It must be a TARDIS. ALL truck-campers are. ;-) However, another negative (besides 13' height this one has) re: truck-campers is they're way HEAVIER than they look also, the biggest ones approach 4000lbs fully loaded. Oops! I actually just saw one that's way OVER that: Eagle Cap Luxury Truck Camper Model 1165, with 2 slides! THAT one is almost 5000lbs DRY WEIGHT (NOT loaded)! Outrageous! Few trucks can carry anything that heavy! And many people you see out there with truck campers are over-loading their trucks big-time, as they try to get by using a smaller capacity truck. Not good wear & tear-wise for the truck -- or safe for the passengers or other drivers on the road... Finally, the trucks needed to carry these larger/largest truck-campers FOR SURE have large engines (V8 minimum), so MPG will be as poor as it gets (expect single-digit MPG). TMK, no NA (Naturally Aspirated) V6 truck can handle that kind of weight so there's no way around high fuel costs -- except there's a bit of relief if the engine is a diesel (but then going diesel has its own negatives). Still, if someone doesn't care about MPG (even when driving the big truck around town while leaving the camper itself parked @ home), doesn't mind the height (high-profile vehicle when camper is aboard), and needing to use more caution while doing any off-roading (higher center of gravity poses a tipping-over possibility on inclines), this combo RV (truck & camper) is a nice, compact and capable package...not to mention it's even BETTER if the truck is 4x4! BTW, since the Cirrus brand is from NuCamp, it's a RV maker that has (at least) two things going for it: (1) a reputation for using better materials/fit & finish (Amish workers) and (2) Customer Care/Support AFTER the sale. They also make the T@B Teardrop travel-trailers (one model is geared for off-road/boon-docking), and they also are known for being better-quality products. They still have some QC issues (as ALSO "top-quality" Airstream does, so BOTH makers need to up their QC efforts!) but still, definitely not your average-built RV. P.S. If I do not end up getting a Class B (in 1.5 years or so, something like the Winnebago Revel 4x4 44E) then I'm looking to get a mid-size truck (Ford Ranger with tow & FX4 packages)...but no mid-size truck can even think about handling these larger truck-campers, so they'd STILL be out of the question for me. Only a towable (small TT or 5er) would be my choice then -- or just go "minimalist" and get a truck-bed rack with a rooftop tent! -- BR

@colormedubious4747
@colormedubious4747 5 жыл бұрын
Big campers demand a one-ton with upgraded suspension. If I go that route, I'm going to plop an AF 865 (not very heavy) on an F-350 dually with factory suspension. A little erring on the side of overkill, for sure, but that should enhance stability in transit and in camp.
@billredding2000
@billredding2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility Since I'd be looking at a mid-size truck (V6/Turbo 4), 1500lbs would be pushing the limit, even for the "segment leader in towing and payload capacities" -- the 2019 Ford Ranger I noted earlier. At best, should be able to carry a 1500lbs camper but only its DRY (empty) weight, not with anything in it (fully-loaded) -- it'd look nice out there in the sticks...but with nothing aboard (water, propane, food, clothes!), that's all I COULD do with it: Look at it. Not quite my ideal camping experience, if I may say so. ;-) I'd have to move up to a full-size truck, like the F150, which has something like 3200lbs payload capacity...now THAT would give me that extra capacity for a loaded 1500lbs camper. As mentioned earlier, I like to be a good deal UNDER the maximum payload (or towing) capacities of whatever vehicle I have. But the Good News is the 150's engine is still a V6 -- an Eco-Boost -- and not a V8 (or diesel) as I'm trying to avoid. As I said though, these truck-campers are heavier than they look...or is it most trucks aren't built with most truck-campers in mind? Except the really huge trucks (dually chassis preferred of course), which I'd have to pass on. Clearly though, $80K (new prices) for truck+camper (maybe $60K for a 4x4 truck though, and $40K for a large camper, like Lance, for example, or perhaps one of the other quality 4-Season campers made by Bigfoot and Northwood/Arctic Fox, for 2 examples) vs. just over $100K for a 4x4 Class B is noteworthy. Still, a big 4x4 dually truck and large camper (both new) would be about $100K also...so that'd be the almost the same cost as the Class B (also new) I mentioned. Kind of like two sides of the same coin: Tossing it and choosing Heads or Tails may be the BEST way to decide, as too often the more research we do it seems the less progress we make toward a clear/easy decision! ;-) Happy Travels -- and continued reviews! -- BR

Neil, I definitely enjoyed this review. It hit close to home. We are looking at downsizing from an Arctic Fox 30’ travel trailer. I’ve been watching your reviews of class B RVs with great interest. I’m 6’4” and not skinny. A full length bed in a class B is hard to find and some of the driver seats are a tight fit as well. A 1 ton or 3/4 ton truck is super comfy and roomy. Most pickup campers come with a full size queen bed. The big pivot point for truck campers is slide or no slide. The truck campers with slides usually require a 1 ton long bed dually. That then becomes a substantial size rig. Arctic Fox makes a non-slide model that can be hauled by a single rear wheel 1 ton truck (which we own). I love to explore in our 4wd truck. It is a short bed which also makes it easier to park at crowded scenic overlooks in places like Yellowstone. Please do a full review of this Cirrus truck camper and consider doing one on the Arctic Fox model 865 or 990 truck campers.

really glad to hear that viewers like you are finding value in me branching out to other alternatives. there are many advantages to the truck camper and another one is that they are generally wider on the inside. i'm not sure about slides myself. I have to research them more. I normally don't like them on class B rigs because of maintenance. You should check out Taylor Dzaman's channel if you haven't already. He has an Artic Fox with a slide and says that if he had to do it over again he wouldn't get the slide. Interesting guy.

Thanks for reviewing this very cool truck camper. Would love to see more of them. One note on the fridge in the 920. Nucamp's website says it's a Thetford N3141 model. Thetford's literature on this model says that the separate compartment at the bottom is a bottle drawer, not a separate freezer. The freezer is inside the main compartment. Love your channel!
@colormedubious4747
@colormedubious4747 5 жыл бұрын
Yay! Truck campers! You forgot one little issue and one HUGE advantage: You can't just slap one on any old pickup truck. You have to install tie-downs and turnbuckles on the truck (you might also have to beef up the suspension, depending on the weight of the camper, and -- if you drive a dually -- you'll need to option swing-out brackets for the camper's jacks). You CAN tow a boat, cargo trailer, or other stuff with a camper loaded by using a hitch extender. I've long been a fan of the Arctic Fox 865: No slides, onboard genny (short bed only), massive tank and propane capacity, four-season (ish), plus gobs of storage. You should review one! Also, people speak highly of Lance and Northern Lite rigs. Regarding the lack of a standard inverter on most (if not all) truck campers, I checked with a local dealer, and aftermarket whole-coach inverters are available (installation is extra, naturally). Another solution is to buy some 12V automotive style inverters for your gadgets. You shouldn't need one for the TV since most TCs now come with 12V LED TVs (standard or optional). One other major advantage to this assemble-your-own RV approach is that, if you decide you don't like the truck or the camper, you just have to trade one of them in for something better. Try THAT with a Class A, B, or C!
@Ultramobility

yeah I love that aspect as well: having a 4 door extended cab where you can travel around with friends or family comfortably as well as getting a 4wd or 4x4 option just makes so much sense. then the coach piece or camper is self-contained and can be left on the truck or fairly easily lifted off and placed down on the ground giving you full use of your truck to get about site seeing or making a run to the grocery while the rest of the family stays back at the camper. it's just so versatile and practical. glad to have my fellow Canadians following and watching me! I have recently started looking at truck campers mainly because I started thinking about living in my camper full time and I don't want to get stuck without my home if my vehicle needs repairs. This camper is one of my favs. My other is the hard-sided foldable truck campers made by Alaskan campers. They are not quite as beautiful design-wise but they have the advantages of being much lighter and not having the height problems. Please consider reviewing the Alaskan truck campers. They even have one that can be used with a small half ton truck. Thanks for the great reviews. They are getting more thorough and more useful.

If you are getting a Regular Cab 1 ton truck that may work depending on the truck. However, the best truck for this if you want a Crew Cab would be a 1 ton dually in the Chevy or Ford. I'm sure the Dodge would work as well. Now, with that said the 2020 Chevy trucks are increasing their towing capacities, this may also increase their payloads as well. You may want to check those weights out once they are available. Good Luck!

Hi Neil, these truck campers are well organized for the size. Class B's should take note. You lived in Quebec before right? I was wondering if you have ever checked out the Safari Condos made there? Specifically the Promaster Chassis XL '21 Flex. They are comparable in price and layout to the Hymer Aktiv (though different), and was wondering what you thought of them.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 жыл бұрын
hi there Sharon. I did indeed check them out while in Quebec. they made it onto my shortlist with the Pleasure-way Ascent and SS AGile by Roadtrek. Those were my final three. When I went to see the Safari condo I wasn't happy with the finishes and some design decisions that they made (like residential style shelves that just laid down on pegs and would rattle going down the road versus being screwed down. that wasn't a huge deal in itself but it made me question other design decision that may be happening behind the scenes. however that was years ago and they are a good company that is always improving. also at the time they had a 12 month wait time and I didn't want to wait.

Why doesn’t it have an alde on demand water heater or even the plus for the heat. Also why not an option for a xantrex lithium system? Is there not enough room? Or any other good reason? Could it be modified easily? How hard is it to put in the truck bed or take it out? How stable is it when it is just free standing without the truck? Will it work in a small truck like a Chevy Colorado? I hope you do a full review of this unit since really seems very appealing, but until I read your full review, I am cautious but like you excited at the thought
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 жыл бұрын
yep bob all great questions that I will try to address in a full review. I'm pretty certain the alde system is a combined heater/boiler but need to verify. pretty sure too that it's propane. they really should offer a Xantrex system as it's so out of the box ready and would greatly benefit from it. would need to speak with xantrex and see if they could/do upgrade truck campers like this. my understanding is that it's pretty straight forward once you learn how to raise and lower the camper on/off the bed of the truck. getting it off is faster.

I do that Defender Tom if you watch my full reviews. I'm trying out something different right now doing Mini-Reviews to gauge and allow viewers to vote on which models they want me to do full reviews on. Otherwise, there's only so much time and I end up doing full reviews on rigs that a lot of people may not be interested in. My plan is to dedicate the latter half of this year to doing the full reviews on the rigs that received the highest votes for earlier in the year. I'm open to a different plan and viewers are welcome to chime in with their thoughts and opinions! and for what it's worth these mini-reviews take me just as much time to research and pull information together from various places including calling and interviewing the manufacturer as the full reviews. they're a great way to get just the essentials without investing a lot of time. but I hear ya.

I’d like to know how these hold up as a camper. Most of the campers you buy nowadays have cheap stretched rubber roofs and seams that are always leaking within the first year or two. i'm so happy to hear that Gail. thank you for saying that. the only class B's that are kind of 4 season are the Galleria and CrossFit with the Polar Package upgrades from Coachmen, The Travato (kind of) by Winnebago. The Travato does put heating elements behind walls or heat tape around pipes. and there may be one or two others that I'm forgetting at the moment. but most class B camper vans are not 4 season ready. Oh the Tofino by Pleasureway is also kinda, half-way 4 season. the pipes and tanks are inside but again no heat tape on pipes and no heating vents or elements behind walls and floors. you really need either heat tape or heating vents/radiators behind walls and floors in order to keep those areas above freezing temperatures. just having pipes and tanks inside isn't enough.

Hi Neil, just found this review, hope you are alerted, I have a question for you. There are a number of good or “just OK” portable battery/inverter/charger systems available to add to smaller Class B campers or truck campers like this one. Hi Neil. Thanks for all your videos/reviews. I am retired and looking to hit the road with my German Shepherd. I plan on traveling across the US and Canada, probably no more than 3 weeks at a time. I will primarily stay in RV campgrounds, but will likely have to dry camp occasionally. I’m looking for a Class B or C that will fit my needs. Ability to dry camp for 2-3 days. Ability to keep the cabin comfortable (AC) for my dog if I have to leave him for a few hours. I love an open (lots of windows), spacious feel. I’m torn between lithium vs traditional AGM batteries. I’m skeptical of diesel, but not completely closed mind. This may not be the right forum to ask you,,,,but it’s the only one I have, and I know you have reviewed a lot of smaller sized vehicles. Any help or direction is appreciated. Keep up the great videos,,,thx.

@Ultramobility 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Mark. First decide how important being able to park is to you. that's a consideration that many do not consider. I know I didn't on my first class b and ended up getting a 24 foot class b only to discover that for my intended use it was to long. I want to be able to use my van as a true second vehicle. that meant nothing over 20 feet in length. that narrowed down things considerably. if that's not important to you then you have more choice. since you're going to be living out of it for up to 3 weeks at a time then space will be important. I've lived out of mine with my dog for up to a week. I could do 3 weeks but that would be it. then decide what layout works for you. what's most important? a comfortable bed? a large kitchen? a nice bathroom? work space? that will determine layout options. gas versus diesel I don't think should be too much of a consideration. get the basics down first.

@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 жыл бұрын
to figure out if parking is important to you do this: for a week, use your normal car and consider it over 20 feet I length. Do not park in any normal street or parking lot parking space. Take up 2 spaces on the street or in parking lots. See if you're okay with that. Some people are. I wasn't. If you're not okay with that then you need to get an RV that's under 20 feet in length. For me I just got tired of trying to find parking. When I did I was constantly worried that I was going to upset someone and come back to a nasty note or worse. I just didn't want to deal with the hassle. But like I said some people have no problem taking up two spaces in a parking lot or two spaces on street parking. If you're not going to be parking a lot in towns or cities then maybe a longer camper van works for you. Just a thought. I really recommend this exercise to everyone considering a camper van because many of use don't think about the effects that the length has on our usage. I know I didn't and then ended up with a $140k coach that I knew almost immediately after owning it for a few months that I made the wrong decision.
@markwilkins9048
@markwilkins9048 5 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility Thanks Neil, the parking test is a good exercise. My primary focus was on Class B’s, for the very reason of having flexibility with parking and access to most areas, (campgrounds, national parks, etc...). As I did a little more research, I was concerned about living space for me and the dog. I am also concerned about controlling the temperature inside the vehicle for those times I need to leave the dog alone. My initial feeling was lithium batteries for the coach, with VoltStart or some other manufacturer equivalent. So much to consider. LOL. Thanks again.

hi there Cynthia - oh gosh no. I could do a different model and floor plan of a class B each week for 52 weeks and would not run out of class bs. no that's not a problem. instead i'm listening to viewers. some viewers simply recommended that I take a look at truck campers - so I did and I liked what I saw and I thought "geez, these my channel is all about being ultra-mobile and these truck campers give you that at a price point that is frankly a hundred thousand dollars under many class B's" So I thought a video about a truck camper might be interesting to see how viewers react. if viewers don't like it then I won't do any more. but I hope that you all see the value in it. also as my channel grows I could conceivable do both a truck camper and a class b review each week. but i'd need to significantly grow the channel to be able to afford that. The real problem I see with truck campers is that you have to climb stairs to get into them. As we age, our knees get worse and I think the demographic age group for this would be younger than 65. But they will only hold two people, so I don't see them useful for families. If you continue with looking at truck campers, it might be good to visit their sales numbers and who usually buys these.

nope. it's not true. they are very stable and designed to be lived in when they are off the truck. I will research further and perhaps some manufacturers have better designs than others but my current understanding is that leaving them off the truck and living in them is by design.

here's what the NuCamp manual says about the Cirrus 920 and habitability when it's freestanding on its jacks. Bottom line: it's fine: *Your camper is designed to be used while standing on the jacks in a lowered position without damage to the camper. When lowering camper, do not allow camper bumper to touch the ground. Damage may occur. Allow two inches of clearance to the ground. *
